Absence

It wasn't unusual for Flerida to find herself alone in the small apartment-like house she lived in with her guardian Huni. For the past months Huni had been vanishing without a trace, leaving no note or an explanation of any sort. There would be food prepared for Riddy, left in the cupboard in the kitchen or in the pantry where an illustrated explanation was kept on what Riddy had to do afterwards.

The Fable was worried at first, but with Huni being gone longer and more often, she got used to the solitude. Fact of the matter was, she kind of liked being alone, away from whatever had been happening in the little village of Hameln. She hadn't made any friends, which was rather sad if you thought about it, and Riddy didn't think about it much. If at all.

Today, however, she was surprised to hear a knock on the door. She didn't expect anyone to visit her, much less her wayward guardian. And indeed it was Huni standing in the doorway with a rather glazed look in her eyes as if she wasn't quite herself.

"Have you eaten yet, Riddy?" the red head asked, her jade eyes tapering into jovial slits.

The Fable shook her head and opened the door wider to welcome Huni in. She knew better than to ask where Huni had gone, the answer was always the same.

"I've been out."

Tears

Flerida woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of sobs. It took her a moment to realize that her face was wet, her nose was runny and her eyes were puffy. She didn't know why she had been crying in her sleep, or why she suddenly just had to wake up. She dries her tears with the back of her hands, uninterested in how they glistened in the moonlight.

Footsteps drew close to her door and a soft knock followed.

"Riddy? You alright, sweetie?" came Huni's concerned voice.

"Yes, I'm fine..." The Fable lied. She wasn't fine, far from it. She was scared, and in anguish. But she absolutely had no idea why.

The door creaked open, and a shaft of light entered along with the red-head. With a small smile, Huni padded towards the Fable's bed and sat down on the edge.

"You want to talk about it? I heard you crying and calling out for help." Huni explained as she stroked Flerida's golden locks.

Flerida shook her head and turned away, pulling the blanket up around her head. She buried her face into the pillows and tried to curl into a ball.

"I said I'm fine." She declared with finality.

"Alright, I'll be in my room if you change your mind." Huni sighed.

Flerida felt the mattress rise, indicating Huni had stood up and left. Still enveloped within the blanket cocoon, Flerida tried to go back to sleep.

In The Shade Of The Forest

Riddy meets Aeka

Kitty

Flerida woke up that day to find there was a new addition to the house. It was curled on her bed, half-purring and half-snoring. The Fable stared at the creature for a few moments before getting out of bed to scoot as far away as possible.

She had even gone so far as to hide in the kitchen. There was just something unsettling about it, but Flerida wasn't sure what.

"Oh, morning sweetie." Huni greeted the Fable from her seat at the dining table. "Have you met Kalikot yet?"

"Who?" She blinks in confusion, did they have a guest that she didn't know about?

"Kalikot, the Floofi I bought recently. He should have greeted you when you woke up." The red-head explains as she takes a sip of her coffee.

"Y-you mean that... thing on my bed?" Flerida shuddered.

"Yes, isn't he a cute little kitty?" Huni grinned.

No wonder Flerida was so uneasy, the creature was a cat. And considering how she was slightly avian in nature (and not the predatorial sort at that), she was naturally nervous about felines.

"Kali won't hurt a fly, they promised me he would be a sweet and docile thing." The guardian assured the Fable.

Still, for the remainder of the day, Flerida was still very wary and cautious of their new pet.

Another Kitty

Huni had disappeared. Again. Flerida had gotten so used to her guardian's absence she practically never expects to find Huni around. After all, she had Kalikot for company, although the avian child was still wary of the feline. That morning, like all the other mornings, Flerida was finishing up her self-imposed chores when the door burst open revealing Huni.

"G'morning Riddy~" the Gaian greeted, "Look what I have!" she chirped, holding out a small bundle of fur.

Flerida twitched at the sight.

Another cat.

Kalikot quirked in interest and quickly padded over to his owner, mewling. The little bundle in Huni's arms unfurled and gracefully leapt down to investigate the source of the sounds coming from Kalikot.

"Look! They like each other!" Huni cheered, clapping her hands in delight.

Flerida only stared wordlessly, unblinking.

Another cat...

Quest Time!

Riddy does not seem to know anything about her powers, nor seem to have any friends. On some rare occurance, she finds that she does have powers, but they're very different than what she expected.

How does she deal with them? Does she do something terrible, and try to find a way to fix it?

Good Luck, young Fable.

Grasping Concepts

Flerida
To You,

I talked to Huni about what friendship is and who my friends are. She says friends are people who are nice to you because they like you, and that you can talk to them about anything because they're supposed to listen. So when I have a friend who talks, I should listen too because it's only fair.

I wonder if Kali and 'Way are friends? They listen when I talk to them, and they're nice to me. Even if they are cats.

So far, I don't think I have many friends. Just Medeine and maybe Tasius, I don't like Ryose and Snowe because they're not very nice to their guardian. I don't know about Aekepi, but Tasius doesn't seem to like him. I wonder why, though?

Lately, Huni asked if I could do anything different. I don't know what she meant by doing things different, maybe she meant if I could do different things? I can clean and somewhat cook, but she said that's not what she was talking about. She said something about her remembering someone who could run really fast, or fly, or see things that not just anyone can.

I don't think I can do anything like that. But she said I might be able to do something different, most kids who come out of no where or not from two people who love each other can do stuff.

That didn't make sense, sorry You.

But she said I came from no where, and found me playing with the paperweight I keep in my room. So, who am I? What am I? Is that a reason why I don't have friends? Is what I can do something like a friend-ticide or something? I hope not because-

Startled by a sudden noise, Flerida quickly slams the journal shut and hides it in a drawer.

"Who's there?" she called out, and was answered by a soft mew. Kalikot sauntered in, tail swishing back and forth as he began to rub against the ridges of Riddy's leg. The Fable sighed and picked up the cat and set him on her lap. "Okie, Huni says a friend is someone who likes me and listens. So you're my friend, right Kali?" she asks as she stroked the Floofi.

Kali purrs, and Flerida takes this as a "Yes."

"Good, think 'Way's my friend too?"

The Floofi yawns and just mews in response. Seems Riddy will have to ask the female feline herself.

Sticks and Stones...

Flerida retreated back inside her house as soon as Ravji had left. She felt weird about meeting him, and because a small smile danced across her face it was the good sort. Her steps were remarkably lighter now that her knees had regained their strength. Vaguely she wondered if she could still dance now that Ravji wasn't around.

"You still haven't told me about your sleeve." Huni's voice cut into her thoughts.

It was too late to hide her arm behind her back, and so she had to tell the truth. The entire embarrassing, humiliating truth. She finished her narration, of how she met Ravji, of how he told her to dance, and how when she cried she turned her sleeve and Ravji's arm into stone. Her eyes closed, waiting for the mocking laughter.

None came.

Instead she found herself in Huni's warm embrace, "Are you alright? Is any other part of your stone?" she asked in concern.

Flerida shook her head, "N-no, just my sleeve. It's odd, shouldn't my cheeks be stone too?"

"I don't know, maybe you aren't affected because you're the cause? I think that's why people who can control fire don't burn when they use their abilities. Yours must be your tears." Huni suggested.

"But I've cried before, how come nothing happened then?" Confusion evident in both her eyes and voice.

"I don't know, but we'll figure it out. I'm glad that Ravji didn't flip out about what happened. Some people aren't as understanding as he is, you know."

The Fable nodded, her cheeks suddenly tinged in pink at the mention of the older boy. "Huni, I'm scared."

"Of what, sweet heart?"

"That I'm not going to be able to find a way to reverse what I've done. What if I cry again and turn Kali or 'Way into stone? I don't want that to happen!"

Huni stared in surprise at Flerida, it was rare for the young girl to raise her voice. Her shock grew as she saw the Fable's stone-sleeve crack apart to reveal the original cloth beneath.

"Riddy! Your sleeve's back to normal!" Huni declared. "It's probably just a temporary thing." She sighed in relief.

Flerida raised her arm to inspect the hem. Yes, it was lighter and had indeed reverted back to normal. But she couldn't help wonder about Ravji's words on how her emotions were her strengths. Did the stone really crack because it wouldn't last long? Or was it because she willed it?

Whichever it was, Flerida knew she'd figure it out sooner or later. She had to, for everyone else's sake.
