.:Naomi:.

She loved to garden. There was something almost zen about it. The clean, neat little rows and furrows, the lives sleeping in the earth. She wasn't one who generally needed calming, no. Naomi was about as calm as a person could be, outwardly. Self posessed and so sure of herself that even she believed it sometimes.

Wiping her forehead with the back of one gloved hand and leaving a long brown smudge of dirt across the pale smooth skin, she looked at the little corner of her little yard that had been given over fully to the vegetables. Tomatoes and carrots and beans would grow here come summer. Lettuces and pumpkins and cucumbers. Naomi liked being self reliant. She liked knowing she could provide for herself so fully. With a great sense of satisfaction she stood and brushed most of the dirt from her jeans. It was ready to be planted, only the weather held her back. Only a little longer.

The small spade and the tattered straw hat went into a bucket just inside the tiny shed she used for storage, occupying the other corner of the yard. The gloves were laid to rest on a sturdy wooden table that held empty pots and bags of potting soil. A rusted blue bicycle lay discarded in the shadows, memories of a childhood that had been, like much of the rest of her life, completely predictable and steady.

You need a man in your life... As Naomi headed for the back door of her little suburban home, she frowned and shook her head, recalling her earlier conversation with her mother. You need to settle down. I want a grandbaby to dandle on my knee. You can't be alone forever, you know. Inside the house on the kitchen table lay several brightly colored brochures. It was, perhaps, a testament to her upbringing that a part of her did long for motherhood. And a testament to her diversion from the path her parents would have set for her that she had neither the desire to marry or to carry a child. But motherhood? The keeping and raising of a little life? Yes... that certainly had it's appeal.

Sitting at the table, Naomi tapped her fingers against the wood and thumbed through the pamphlets describing the joys of adopting a gaian child from various upstanding establishments. The people here were strange, there was a reason her parents never visited. The strange twist of fate that had brought her to this land was best left in the dark recesses of the mind. But a child... a child might do her some good. Perhaps she should take this adoption thing a little more seriously. She had enough money stashed away to cut down her hours, or take a leave of absence entirely from the practice. She had no patients that wouldn't survive without her for awhile, anyways.

Always good at reading herself, Naomi made a small, decisive sound in the back of her throat. A child then. A change. It was time to turn her life completely upside down... she could handle it. She wanted it. The decision made, she put on a kettle for tea and sat down to seriously consider her options.

.:Naomi:.

Well... it was nothing if not fitting, she supposed. She did like to garden... so why not a child that came from a supercomputer that was pretending to be a cabbage? The imagery evoked a faint smile... something from her childhood. Somewhere in Georgia. A big tree with a bunch of cabbages around it, and little dolls. She'd had one of those dolls as a kid... maybe she could find it. Dig it up for this little one. That, too, might be fitting. Her mother had taken her there, to that more mundane cabbage patch. It had felt like magic at the time, though she now knew better.

This cabbage, though, while perhaps not magic was certainly special. And high-tech. Naomi wasn't entirely left out of the loop that was today's technology. But Gaia was so very different than where she was from. The technology was different. The magic more obvious. Not that she minded, of course... she'd been here a long time. She was pretty much used to it. It was rare for a strange looking person to utterly take her breath away these days. For bizarre events to suprise her. For the thought of a baby growing inside a cabbage to seem anything other than a completely practical solution.

She set the precious vegetable on her kitchen table and looked at it. Maybe this was folly... a child? She'd been so sure just an hour or two ago. No. She was still sure. Naomi was not the type of woman to doubt herself and besides. All new parents were unsure and nervous at first. She recognized that, accepted it as inescapable, and patted the cabbage distractedly. She had a nice large pot waiting outside, along with some good organic potting soil. Not knowing wether pesticides would effect the thing, she thought it better to be safe anyways.

A little less than an hour later, a potted cabbage sat on her window sill, in full view of the chilly april sky. She stared at the thing, and shook her head. A little hard to believe... she'd have a child in a few days. All she had to do was water it and make sure it didn't die. Could computers die? She rather doubted it, but had not intentions of taking such chances anyways.

There was a room that was kind of ready upstairs, next to her own. She didn't know if the cabbage would be a boy or a girl, so she hadn't done any decorating. She didn't know if it would be an infant or a toddler, so she'd bought a crib that could be converted to a safe little bed, and that was as far as she'd gotten. Naomi figured she had a few days more, at the very least. Pouring herself a glass of iced tea, she sat back to watch the plant grow.

.:Naomi:.

"No, mom... yes, mom." Naomi paced around the sunny kitchen in her socks, wrapping the long phone cord around her wrist several times and rolling her eyes at the pink felix clock on the wall. "No. It's only a short hiatus... No, mom. I'm fine. I'm just taking a little time off work, you know. Like a vacation at home." Like learning how to raise a kid would be a vacation. "Yes, mom. I'll try to come and visit you soon. Give papa my love. Bye mom."

Naomi hung up the phone and sighed, realizing that one way or another, she'd managed to not only wind the cord around her wrist, but also around both ankles and her waist, making movement quite impossible. She carefully extricated herself and padded over to the cabbage that was still sitting cheerfully on the window sill. Picking up the bright green spray bottle, she spritzed the leaves, pulling off a wilted one here and there.

The cabbage smelled weird. Not bad weird... just not cabbagey. She'd expected the soft green foamey scent like the fresh cabbages in her garden gave off. Or even the damp wet-sock smell they emitted when boiled. She didn't think cabbages were supposed to smell like tiki bars. Or salt. Weird. Maybe it was some kind of nano-technological quirk. Either way, her whole house now smelled like a pina colada. It made her long for the beach.

Giving the cabbage a small pat on it's leafy head, Naomi smiled and headed into the living room, selecting a book from the huge floor to ceiling bookshelves. Grimms fairy tales. Huh... it had been years since she'd cracked that old tome. And yet... it seemed a day for old stories. Curling up on her couch, Naomi gave a soft sigh of contentment and opened the book. A cabbage wasn't so hard to deal with.

.: Of Birth :.

She noticed, because even though it was sunny out, there was a darkening in the air of the house, as the sky had grown noticeably cloudy. But, glancing out the window, it was still a bright and cheerful day. Naomi frowned, chilled, and stood up with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. An ominous buzzing noise, barely perceptible, was coming from the kitchen area and a strange fear gripped her heart. The cabbage!

Running to the breakfast nook, Naomi skidded to a halt in the doorway and stared. Something hovered over the cabbage. She couldn't say quite what it was, it didn't have an appearance so much as a presence. Slack jawed, she watched as this... whatever it was... slowly seemed to settle into the very leaves of the plant. It's essence saturated them and the tropical scent of flowers and rain grew sharper, permeating the whole house. And then, just as suddenly as it had started, the strange darkness faded and the house was once more flooded with sunshine. There was no hint of that odd presence... that thing which had been hovering around her kitchen table. It was almost as if it had never been. Naomi's brain shrugged the oddness off, stashing it away in a back corner of the mind to be drawn out and examined later.

She went over and tentatively touched a cabbage leaf. It seemed fine... none the worse for wear. Perhaps it had been a figment of her imagination after all. Her breathing eased, there was nothing wrong... everything was - the cabbage's unusual odor increased again. Frowning, she peered down at the tightly bunched leaves and her frown grew deeper as they seemed to uncurl. To crack open just a little. Light shone into the depths of the cabbage, illuminating here a flash of blue... and there a wash of pink... and then a big golden eye opened and blinked from within the shadows and Naomi uttered a shriek and fell backwards.

By the time she was back on her feet, the crack in the leaves had widened and a tiny brown hand raised itself tentatively into the air. Peering down, the self-composed psychologist felt all her composition leave her. Nestled among the damp leaves was a damp baby, dark hair that shifted in hue from green to blue to black clung to her round little cheeks, and a pair of bright gold eyes blinked, taking in this strange new world. The other tiny hand raised itself as well, and the toddler (strange, she'd thought it would be younger...) wiggled it's fingers as if to say, Well? Aren't you going to lift me up so I can see the rest of it?

In dazed obedience, she lifted the slight little thing up, noticing the tightly curled buds in her hair and around her neck, the satiny skin, the way the little girl weighed next to nothing. "Baby..." Naomi wondered aloud, her voice quiet with amazement. "My baby." She stroked the soft hair as the little one's eyes darted all around in wonderment. Then, the little girl opened her mouth in a wide grin and let out a bright little giggle of joy.

.: The Treasure Hunting Princess :.

Naomi was taking a nap. Kaimi was supposed to be doing the same... and indeed, she had been until just a few moments ago. But something had woken her up. It happened at night a lot... someone whispered in her ear, telling her things she could never remember upon waking... and it wasn't Naomi whispering. The voices (sometimes there were two, it seemed) had woken her from her nap and now she was wide awake. She sat in her little bed and gazed around her room for a few moments, looking at the brightly decorated walls as if she'd never seen them before. Had anything changed? ...No... everything was where she'd left it, her few toys scattered all over the floor. Good... nothing had gotten up and moved while she wasn't looking.

She got out of bed and wandered into the hallway, looking down the stairs to where her guardian was snoring gently on the couch. No sense in waking her up, it seemed. Naomi didn't always like to be woken up to play, she was of the mind that a child should be able to occupy itself at times. Well then, Kaimi would find something to occupy herself. But what was there to do?

She sat down at the top of the stairs and scooted down on her bottom, one by one. That was always fun. Once in the living room she crept past the sleeping figure on the couch and padded on bare feet into the kitchen. She knew there was a bowl of jelly beans on the counter even if she couldn't see that high. Naomi was predictable like that. So she pushed a chair from the table to the counter and climbed on up, greedily grabbing a handful of candy and shoving it into her mouth as she contemplated potential ways to suitably occupy herself.

All the doors were locked... so she couldn't get outside. A pillow fort? She rejected that idea, as the couch on which Naomi slept held the most suitable pillows. Grabbing another handful of jellybeans she munched thoughtfully before sliding down from the chair and toddling back to the stairs. It amused her briefly to pretend that the stairs were a waterfall that she was trying to climb up. That lasted until she reached the second floor and then she pretended to swim across the carpet (now a rushing river full of deadly rapids) until she got to her guardian's door. Grabbing the doorknob for dear life, she somehow found herself innocently tumbling into Naomi's bedroom.

It was much cleaner than her own. And it smelled gentler... like soft white flowers instead of the big bold flower scent that always permeated the air around Kaimi. A flash caught her eye, distracting and bright. Oh! The closet door was a little bit open! Kaimi had never seen what was in Naomi's closet.

It turned out not to be very interesting. Boring shirts. Boring pants. Boring skirts... the same thing her guardian always wore. But... wait! There was a box shoved back into the corner of the closet. And something in a truly hideous shade of pink was poking out. Further investigation into the box revealed a magenta taffeta tutu that was spangled with sequins. Kaimi shoved it on over her own skirt and dug a little deeper. What fun! There was a green military jacket that was frayed at the cuffs and worn at the elbows and decorated with all sorts of wonderful patches. She put this on as well, not seeming to notice how terribly the green and the pink clashed. Delving further into this treasure trove, she found an old hat a la Indiana Jones and also a tiara. Grinning with delight, she put the tiara on the hat and then the hat on her head. Beautiful. All she needed was a weapon. What did the man in the movies use? Oh... yes. One of Naomi's nicer black belts sufficed very well as a whip.

The Treasure Hunter Princess of the Island of Waka-Laka-Looie peered out of the cave (that used to be a closet) to find with dismay that what had once been a floor was now a boiling river of angry red lava. This was terrible! How could she possibly make it to safety? Perhaps... if she could find a way across the lava she could get to that big raft (that was once a queen sized bed and was, apparently, inflammable) and make her way to the shrine of Onky-Wonky, the monkey god. Look! A trail of stones that bore no resemblance to shoes led the way to the raft. Waving her whip high and snapping it in the air, the Treasure Hunter Princess leapt boldly from stone to stone until she reached the safety of the raft.

***

Naomi woke up to a dull thudding sound directly overhead. It sounded as if the ceiling were about to come down right on top of her. "What the..." She muttered as she got up off the couch and headed up the stairs. Whatever was going on, it was going on in her bedroom. Almost afraid of what she would find, Naomi peered inside.

The Treasure Hunter Princess was bouncing gleefully on her guardian's bed, shouting encouragement of some sort. Naomi bit back a laugh at her daughter's attire. Where on earth... but her wondering was cut short.

"Mom!" Kaimi shouted, picking up a pillow and straightening her hat (the brim of which fell over her eyes) all at the same time. "Get on this log! Hurry!" She threw the pillow at Naomi, narrowly missing beaning her on the head. "The floor is lava!"

.:Naomi:.

Once upon a time there was an invisible girl. An embarrassing girl. People could see her, but they pretended like they couldn't. They just looked right through her instead.

Once upon a time there was a girl who nobody wanted to admit that they knew. There was something wrong with her. She was a shadow girl. Boys pretended like they liked her... boys would kiss her and hold her in the dark. But during the day they walked past her, because she was invisible to them too.

Once upon a time there was a girl who didnt have a self. She was empty inside. There was nothing there. Then one day she met someone who saw her. And so she went with them. And she faded away from the world. And she went to the place all the invisible people went. And nobody knew she was gone.

Naomi sighed, her fingers brushing over the well-creased paper, read so many times that the ink was faded and the paper near transparent. Holly... Who would have known? She should have... should have done something.

It was true, what her sister had written. It was two days before anyone had noticed Holly was gone. There had been frantic searches, the police were called... missing persons reports filed. Amber alerts issued. But nobody had ever seen Holly again. Two years after her dissapearance her parents had given up. A death certificate was issued. Naomi didn't have a sister anymore.

And then... the letter. She clutched the envelope convulsively, swallowing back her feelings. She was good at that. She knew it was her fault... she knew it was all her fault, Holly dissapearing. She knew it, because sisters were supposed to take care of each other. She knew it, because twins were supposed to take care of each other even more.

The letter had come six months after they'd declared her sister dead. Six months after the terrible funeral with the empty coffin. Their bond as twins, strong when they were little, had faded when the girls had reached puberty and gone their seperate ways. Naomi the shining academic... Holly just fading into the background. But even though the bond was barely there, it's hold was tenuous enough for her to know that her sister wasn't dead. But she wasn't here either.

Eventually, Naomi came to Gaia. She searched. She asked. She never found her. Not even a little. Maybe it was true, then... maybe Holly really was invisible. But somewhere, in this vast world, there had to be an answer where there was none on earth. It was as if she chased a ghost.

And she began a life here, while she looked for her sister. And now she had a daughter to care for. Clients to deal with. A household to run and support. So she suppressed the despair that rose up inside her. It was probable that her sister didn't even want to be found. But when she'd seen Kaimi, bouncing on her bed, wearing Holly's old costumes...

She'd taken the letter out again. And read it for the first time in months. All the old pain welled up inside her and she let it, for a brief moment, before ruthlessly putting it back into it's place. If Holly was invisible, it was the fault of Naomi and everyone else for never really seeing her in the first place.

Rising, she slid the letter back into it's envelope and opened the trunk at the foot of her bed. She put the envelope back inside and then, hesitantly, pulled out something old and ragged and careworn. She held the stuffed tiger to her face, feeling it's still soft fur and smelling the lingering scent of her sister on it. They had been great friends, Holly and her tiger.

Tiptoeing, she crossed the hall and went into Kaimi's room, where the little girl slept soundly, sprawled out on her bed. Lifting one tiny arm, Naomi tucked the stuffed animal under it. Kaimi reflexively pulled the toy close and mumurred somewhat in her sleep, her expression serene and innocent.

"I'll always see you..." Naomi whispered to the little girl. "I'll never let you dissapear."

.:Mysterious Strangers:.

Kaimi... Kaimi wake up... The faint whispers drew her out of a restless sleep. Kaimi sat up, rubbing her eyes. The little fan in the open window blew in erratic drifts of warmish air, it seemed the whispers rode on those little breezes. Kaimi... good girl now... There were two voices. They seemed to trade off, though they occasionally spoke in harmony. Though more or less genderless, they had the high sweet tones of children's voices and their spoken rythm was poetic, almost singsong. Haunting... compelling.

Obediently, the little girl got out of bed and stretched her arms over her head, yawning. She paused for a moment, head cocked to one side, as she gazed around her bedroom. Everything was where she'd left it. Her toy ponies hadn't galloped off into the night as she slept. The curtains fluttered a little in the window and caught her gaze, for a moment she watched the lace-fringed cloth dance about a bit. Kaimi... The soft tugging of the voices brought her back to herself. Though they had never been quite so coherent before, more like the suggestion of a whisper than actual words, their presence was something she'd always been used to. It didn't occur to her to question who or what they were. They just... were.

Faint sounds drifted up into her open window. She recognized the tone of Naomi's voice and another, one she hadn't heard before. It was a deep voice, a man's voice. Naomi didn't know any men... at least not that Kaimi was aware of. Her curiosity peaked, she opened the babygate Naomi had installed in her bedroom door (another benefit to the whispery voices. They sometimes showed her how to do things, like unlatch the baby gate) and made her way to the stairs. Sliding down them one by one on her bottom, her favorite method of descending stairs, she paused at the bottom to listen for Naomi, trying to decide where her guardian was.

It sounded like they were on the back porch. Padding along on bare feet, Kaimi went to the back door and peered through the screen. Naomi was sitting at the little outside table across from a man who wore a hooded cloak so deep she couldn't see his face. His voice, when he spoke, was like velvet and made the little girl feel strange. Naomi's voice was laced with fear, though she was hiding it well. Kaimi picked up on the tenseness of her guardian, but didn't know where it was coming from. The man spoke a few more words and then slid an envelope across the table to Naomi, who looked at it but didn't touch it. Her face was pale and bloodless, her lips pressed tight together.

"You didn't tell me you had a daughter." The man said unexpectedly. "Come out, little girl..."

"No..." Said Naomi, firmly. "She has nothing to do with this. My daughter is upstairs asleep in her bed. And she'll stay there."

Kaimi felt the pulling in the man's voice, it was the same kind of pulling feeling the whispers made her feel sometimes. But they were silent now, the whole world seemed to be holding it's breath as her chubby brown little hand pushed the screen door open and she took a hesitant step out onto the porch.

"Kaimi!" Naomi said sharply, beginning to stand. "Go back to bed! Now!"

Her mother's voice cut through the pulling feeling. Naomi never used that tone... Naomi was never mad. Usually Kaimi would laugh sharp words off without a care, turning her giant golden eyes on her guardian and gaining instant forgiveness for whatever minor transgression she had caused. But something in her voice... it frightened her. Kaimi's lower lip began to tremble slightly. "...mommy?" She asked in a pale, meek little voice. Reassurance. She needed reassurance from her mommy! Mommy's weren't supposed to get scared!

"Hey now, little one... Kaimi, is it?" The hooded man turned towards her, she could see the bottom of his face inside the shadows. It was pale, almost white, and his lips were turned up in a faint, menacing grin. "I'm your uncle Leeward. C'mere and give me a hug."

Again, that pulling feeling. That sense of compulsion. She took half a wobbly step towards his open arms. Then, with the speed of a striking snake, Naomi had jumped between them and snatched Kaimi into her arms tightly all in one fluid gesture. Her jaw was clenched as she glared daggers at the hooded man, all her fear burned away by anger. By this unexpected surge of maternal protectiveness.

"Leave. Now." It seemed to take a great effort for Naomi to get those two words out, but they were enough. With a mocking little bow, the cloaked man murmurred something polite and headed towards the back gate. Once he was gone, Naomi let out a big sigh and held her daughter crushingly close.

"Why don't you sleep with me tonight, baby?" She said, her voice wavering. She picked up the envelope from the table and tucked it into her pocket, carrying Kaimi upstairs. The little girl clung to her mother's neck like a monkey, eyes wide. Left wondering what had just happened and too young to make any kind of sense of it whatsoever.

.:Uncle Leeward Again:.

Uncle Leeward was back. Kaimi had been put to bed, but it was a hot and restless night, yet again. She couldn't sleep. So she'd been playing quietly in her room with her ponies, pretending that her stuffed tiger Fredward was a great giant monster hell bent on devouring the ponies. Princess Delilah (her newest pony, a teal and pink glittered monstrosity on whom Kaimi had painted a couple awkward flowers with Naomi's nailpolish) was rallying the rest of the herd to battle with the aid of Queen Bishop's (one of the winged ponies) herd of magic users. All in all she had about eleven of the little plastic toys, many the worse for wear after Kaimi's attempts at hair cuts and makeovers.

Things were just getting really good, with a hammer-and-anvil sort of attack plan being laid out and implemented, when the sound of raised voices drifted up into the little girl's room. It was late... it was past bedtime. Naomi so rarely had visitors, and it was even more rare that Kaimi heard her arguing. In fact, the only person Kaimi had ever heard Naomi raise her voice to was Uncle Leeward, the last time he had come over. She didn't understand the term uncle, except in that it was some vague familial reference. She didn't know wether or not Naomi and the man were blood relations or not. But hearing the anger and anxiety in her guardian's voice bothered Kaimi.

Being as quiet as possible, she put the battle on hold and slipped out of her room. Naomi still didn't know she could work the baby gate. So she opened it up and crept to the banister at the top of the stairs, peering down through the wooden balustars at the scene in the living room.

"She isn't part of your world anymore, Naomi..." Said the rich, velvet voice of Uncle Leeward. "She belongs to us now. We care for her more than anyone else ever has..."

"What do you know!" Naomi's voice was fringed with barely suppressed rage. "Her life wasn't all that bad! She was misunderstood, sure... but -"

"But what? You're the one whose shadow she was forced to live in. You're the one who shone so brightly that you extinguished all of her own light."

"That isn't fair!" Naomi shouted, her face red, eyes shining with the threat of tears. "That is. Not. Fair. She's my sister! I would never hurt her! You can't hold my achievements against me just because..." She trailed off, realizing the futility of this argument. She blamed herself, why shouldn't this man?

"I understand, Naomi..." His voice was like bullets drenched in honey. Smooth and deadly. "Believe me, I understand. You were the shining star... she was nothing. Why, then, begrudge her to us? Certainly having her out of your life makes more space for you."

"She's my sister..." Naomi said weakly. "Can't I at least see her? Wont you at least tell me where she is?"

Uncle Leeward chuckled softly. An infectious, menacing sound that made Kaimi, watching from the upstairs shadows, curl up into a tight little ball to make sure he didn't see her. She felt drawn to him and yet... there was something wrong there. She just didn't know what it was.

"She doesn't want to see you. She wants nothing to do with you. And as such, I've come to deliver this message to you, from her: Leave her alone. Stop looking, she doesn't want to be found." He paused delicately, then continued in a voice of thinly veiled hatred. "And, a message from myself, and the others: If you continue seeking her, you will not like what you find. And if you should try to take her from us... try and fail, mind you, for there is no room for success there, then we will take something you hold more valuable. And we will keep it."

Naomi's eyes narrowed. If she'd had the ability, Kaimi was certain that she'd be shooting little electric sparks out of her eyeballs. Or steam through her nose. "Don't think I dont know what you are..." She said in a low voice. "I know what you are... and what you do. And if you've done it to Holly, so help me god..."

Uncle Leeward let out a full throated laugh this time, filling the small house with mirth. "My dear," he said, still chuckling. "You know nothing, if you think yourself so wise. And as for god..." He grinned at Naomi and her face blanched. From her perch, Kaimi couldn't see his face, only disgust and terror on that of her guardian's. "My darling, we are gods. We are the gods of the lost and the forgotten. We are the gods of the alone and unwanted. We are the gods of the shadows. And we are the only gods that matter to you now. Best keep that in mind." With that, he made a great sweeping bow, and went out through the front door, the hooded cloak billowing behind him.

Once he had left, Naomi crumpled to the carpet, rolling herself into a fetal position. Kaimi felt her heart clutching, longing to go down and comfort her guardian. No... no... leave her be. She needs time. She'll only be angry with you... The voices, which seemed to be oddly silent in Uncle Leeward's presence, spoke up and pierced through the strange pulling feeling left in Uncle Leeward's wake, bringing about their own, more benign sense of compulsion. She should go back to her room. That would be the best thing to do. They were right... they were always right. At least as far as Kaimi was concerned, that is.

So she went back to her bedroom and closed the baby gate behind her. She sat on the floor, unable to get back into the grand battle of ponies versus tigers. Instead, she took one of the ponies, a black one with a silver mane, and galloped it a little across the carpet. "I am the god of the forgotten" Kaimi intoned in a deep voice. Then she picked up Fredward and marched him towards the pony. "I am the god of Kaimi and Naomi" Fredward roared. And then he bit off the ponie's head.

.:I'm a Big Girl now!:.

Something wasn't quite right.... the window was open, the fan helping to bring a weak breeze into the bedroom. It wasn't terribly effective, though, and Kaimi was sprawled out haphazardly all over her little bed, the sheets and blankets long since kicked to the floor. Her pillow, too, had somehow gotten itself to the other end of the room, toppling over a hoarde of ponies. Kaimi was sleeping, fitfully, her stuffed tiger clutched tight to her chest.

It was the whispers that started it. They sounded concerned and urgent... unsure of what was going on. It was their agitation that woke her, like the room was suddenly filled with terribly loud white noise. Golden eyes opened and Kaimi yawned, stretching. The stretching didn't feel right, though. She looked around the room, as was her tendency, big eyes taking everything in to make sure none of her toys had run away. But the room looked... it was... everything was in the right place. But it was somehow different. Frowning, she slid out of bed and got to her feet. But again, there was something wrong. Her legs... were all funny. They weren't right at all, and she managed to trip over her own feet as she attempted to stand. This wasn't going well...

Kaimi... Kaimi... The voices. They sounded a little worried, but she was far too busy with her own concerns to pay them any heed. Crawling over to her closet, she peered into the mirror. Gently lit by pale moonlight, a face both familiar and strange looked back at her. Kaimi studied her reflection, confused. Finally, after nearly a full minute of contemplation, she tried standing again, and returned her gaze to the mirror. "Oh..." She said, her voice soft and startled. "Oh." She murmurred again, conprehension dawning slowly. This was unexpected. But she accepted it... it had happened, hadn't it? So it must have been supposed to happen. She guessed that everyone woke up sometimes and were suddenly themselves but different. Bigger. Taller. She grinned sleepily and awkwardly made her way back to her bed, falling onto it in a sprawl, limbs spread wide. Her last thought before falling asleep again wasn't about how suprised Naomi would be to find out. It was that she was probably tall enough now to reach the counter where the jellybeans were without having to stand on a chair.
