A game based on Doctor who could really go any way. It could be good if it's done right, but then again it has the potential to be really s**t. I'll be getting it, though, no matter what.

I've got XCode, Pixen, a potential group of testers and a Teach Yourself C++ book right here. So why haven't I made a Doctor Who game?
Because I'm LAZY. They are too, which is why they can't think of anything better than a Top Trumps game with Doctor Who cards. Then again maybe they're going to make some clever strategy game that's faithful to Top Trumps but also innovative and fun. But let's face it, that's never going to happen.

Hm. If it wasn't going to be cards, I might go right ahead and upgrade to a DS from my GBA SP. Ah well.

I say, get a game with Sandbox-style motion (e.g. GTA Vice City) and make the Sonic Screwdriver change settings, with like 'Door unlocker' and 'machine fixer,' etc. and give him alternate clothes and a unique storyline, and Companions that can be other players (Or better yet, switch them for the Doctor for certain goals), that would make a game like... I don't want to say GTA Vice, 3, or San Andreas, so... how about Kingdom Hearts???

It's such a huge Whoniverse, they could just put you in charge of the TARDIS and then have a set amount of planets you could land on, and then you'd have to free that planet from the Big Bad Whatever. And because the Doctor tends to be strictly non-violent where possible, you could solve it by solving puzzles or whatever. I don't think it'd work so well if you controlled the Doctor, but if you were the companion and he'd say "now don't run off!" and then dissapear so, being a typical companion, you'd have to go solve everything. Though he'd probably show up just in the nick of time. I love the idea of having his stats change with different regenerations!
But that'd be great, really! Although I think if I were to play it I'd refuel much more often than necessary, just to go see Jack <3
As for the Top Trumps-like game... well, I'll probably get it second-hand at some stage, just for teh sake of having it :/

I remember when Good Omens came out, Gaiman and Pratchett were being interviewed together.
Pratchett was asked why there wasn't a Discworld RPG and he replied that it was because companies kept coming to him asking him to endorse some "off the peg combat system."
Gaiman chirrped up with, "Perhaps if they came to you with a running away system..."
Part of me thinks we'll never get a good Doctor Who video game until someone involved has a similar insight.

Just a good old fashioned menu-driven RPG would make me happy. No hurrying up to react in real-time combat-style, just figuring out problems, talking to people, finding important items, using them to defeat hostiles or escape from them without killing, working out a mystery to solve the problem & stop whatever evil plot is hatching... stuff like that. smile

The style of game that always struck me as being perfect for Doctor Who was that of the old SCUMM games - Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max Hit The Road. All those things. In order to get though those you just needed to be witty, solve problems and ask impertinent questions. What's more Doctor-ish than that?

Oh, I loved the original Monkey Island game! That thing was hilarious! That's something else I'd want in a Doctor Who game--HUMOR! My favorite RPG console games are the Lunar games on the Sega CD, adapted for the US by Working Designs. There are a lot of people to talk to in the towns, and some of them just cut loose and say completely demented things that have you laughing out loud, which is a great incentive for wading through a lot of town talk looking for important information!

I definitely agree with the RPG style as opposed to an action game.
Turn-based games, or puzzle-based storyline would be much more appropriate since the Doctor frowns on violence -- plus if there were varied levels of difficulty, adults could enjoy it as much as kids. biggrin
I agree about the FF guys being in charge. Squaresoft definitely knows what it's doing in terms of realistic animation. heart
