 ..Finding Guidance.. Roleplay Contest Entry
Prompt:After a long sea journey, you have arrived at Zatao. More precisely, the city of Katarina. You see tempting hotels and other places to rest in this city where everything has an air of being new...but no time for that! You've come for something and you'll get it now.
You walk outside Katarina's limits, into open country, looking for a Pokemon.
What to include: Who are you and what Pokemon do you want? What do you want to be in this new land? Maybe a trainer, breeder, healer or collector? Where will you go to find your Pokemon? What does the Pokemon you want look like? How does it react upon seeing you, or being caught?
Username: CatCry (Character named Delirious) Pokemon: Shinx Nickname (optional): Guidance Prompt Response:
The salt wind teased his hair and stung his eyes, but Llyri struggled to keep them open. The sight of the ocean swells gleaming in midmorning sunlight was well worth it though. His pencils skated across the already smudged surface of his sketchbook, recording the brilliant lights and smooth shadows. Llyri drank in the vast expanse of blue sky and blue sea, perfect reflectiosn of each other right down to the way the foamy throats of the waves floated like clouds over the water's surface. This morning was particularly beautiful after the thundering gloom of the previous rainstorms. They weren't the violent kind of storms that made the boat rock and pitch, and flung heroic sailors overboard as the rest of the crew clung fearfully to the swaying rigging, and the land-loving passengers lay ill with nausea in their cabins; nope, it was just a solid three days of relentless driving rain, probably being propelled by the same soft winds that carried the ship. Llyri wasn't prone to seasickness, but his legs still wobbled with the tossing of the ship as he made his way up to the very tip of the prow, keeping on hand on the rail to steady himself. His balance wasn't all that great in the first place and he was sadly out of touch with his vestibular system, as well as most of the rest of the workings of his body.
The espeon that followed him did not seem to share this particular disability although her mental capacities were much greater than Llyri's. She leaped up onto the rail and walked nimbly along it, completely unafraid of falling into the sea. Mina, it's dangerous! he sighed mentally. She sent him a disdainful look when she sensed his reproof. Honestly! She wasn't going to fall and if she did, she could always teleport herself back on board. Like her owner, Mina was stubbornly proud of her abilities and without her pokeball and Llyri has almost no control over her, to the point where she refused to speak to him, either vocally or by projecting into his mind. Since Llyri's own psychic abilities were absolutely dismal, he doubted he'd be able to hear her anyway, although she could undoubtedly hear him. Having grown up in a family that used psychic pokemon, Llyri was used to having his thoughts monitored and tried not to think anything obscene. As the coast of Zatao appeared on the horizon, he firmly reminded himself that this was the entire reason he had left Saffron City. Being surrounded by those obsessed with the spiritual world, both human and pokemon, day in and day out was enough to drive any non-psychic crazy and Llyri had already had a lifetime of it. He was here to experience the world in it's true physical form and not even Mina could stop him.
Within a few hours, Llyri was stepping off the gangplank and into port city Katarina. Well, this was it. Zatao was about as far away as he could get from his sisters, now to get rid of his babysitter. Without giving himself time to think, Llyri took off at a dead run. He dashed into the nearest building, up two flights of stairs and through the isles of a department store, Mina hot on his trail. His backpack bounced as he ran, jarring the contents against his back to the frantic rhythmn of his feet as he looped around the counter and headed back down the stairs and out from a different exit. Once outside again, he ran in a set of revolving doors and out the heavy door of a fire exist. He bolted down the road, while the espeon was trapped in the building.
By the time he'd reached city limits, his lungs were burning and his legs felt like lead. Only then did he dare stop to catch his breath. Llyri collapsed into the cool grass, panting hard. He rolled onto his back and stared up at the endless depths of the sky. He was free! Once his heartbeat had slowed, Llyri got up and started walking. Zatao was still unexplored enough that very few inland routes had been established. By mid afternoon, the path had taken him into the depths of a thick forest and dwindled away to nothing more than a faint smudge on the leaf strewn floor. Weary from his run and from a day's walking, Llyri sat down to rest. He really wished he'd thought ahead and packed provisions, but there hadn't been any time to buy them in Katarina while he was trying to escape from Mina. No doubt, the espeon had teleported back to his sisters in Saffron City now that Llyri was well out of her range. Good riddance to her.
Llyri realized that it was dangerous to travel without a pokemon, in case he was attacked, but he wasn't ready to head back to civilization yet. It was nice to be away from people, to be away from the constant press of many powerful minds against his. At home he could feel to prescence of his four sisters like a tangible pressure, despite the megarness of his own abilities. On the ship and in town it was the constant low hum of conversation that bothered him, but out here, there was a blissful nothing. A pair of pidgies landed on the lowest branch of a nearby tree, cooing softly. The grass rustled and the leaves answered. The entire forest teemed with life and not one of those pokemon emitted the thick whirr of nonsense that seemed to hang around humans. Contented, he pulled out his sketchbook and began to document the scene.
As he drew a young shinx bounded out of the brush, completely missing the ratatta that scurried away and crashing into him instead. It shook itself and nudged him again. When Llyri didn't respond, the shinx decided that he must be a tree or somehting similar, and pranced around, looking for the ratatta. It quickly grew bored and started pounced on dry leaves instead. Slowly, Llyri lifted his pencil up to his sketchbook, careful not to attract the pokemon's attention and began to draw.
His eyes swept over the smooth curve of the shinx's back and lingered over it's floppy black paws. It was not only the sketching, but the seeing that set Llyri apart from his sisters. They were so wrapped up in the complex psuedo-realities that their minds had created that they were unable to appreciate the subtle flex of hard muscle under a sleek glossy coat or the depth of metallic silver eyes. No, he was the only one who understood the grace of the cub's playful expression, the potential in the glittering of tiny claws and the gentle sweep of a long tail. The shinx's black paws were ringed with bright gold bands and the deep blackish blue of it's hindquarters blended smoothly with light bluish white forequarters in a gradient of stripes, but the spots above it's eyes were bright yellow like the tuft on the end of it's tail. Llyri was enraptured by it's beauty. In the dim light of the forest, he could see that each strand of the cub's gorgeous coat glowed softly, shining against the gloom. Never before had he seen such a rare specimin. Llyri was unsure if this was just an unusual shinx or the glowing pelt was typical of the Zatoa regeion, but he wanted to sketch as much as he could before the shinx left, or worse, the mother Luxoray decided that he was a threat.
Still full of boundless energy, the cub decided to explore Llyri's backpack. While he was delighted to have it so close for observation, he wasn't entirely happy when the shinx managed to tip it over and scatter the contents across the forest floor. Still, he didn't dare say anything for fear of scaring it away. The shinx was now so close that the light from it's fur cast a bluish glow over Llyri's drawings. He stiffened in alarm when the shinx batted at one of his spare pokeballs but it was already too late. The creature vanished in a flash of red light.
Llyri waited a few moments to see if the shinx would fight its way out, but nothing happened. Alarmed, he opened the pokeball to reveal a very confused cub tangled up in the blanket that he'd stored in it. Once it worked itself free (tearing up the blanket in the process), it simply stared at the strange implement. "Go on now. You can go." he encouraged, but the shinx sat on it's haunches and started staring at him instead. Somewhat shaken by the experience, Llyri tried to recapture the blanket into the pokeball, but it didn't work anymore so he had to dig out an empty one. That accomplished, he promptly packed up his drawing supplies and decided to leave before something large, blue, and motherly fried him into electrically charged dust. To his surprise, the shinx followed. He changed directions. The shinx was still right behind him. He stopped and the shinx dropped to a crouch, stalked a few paces and pounced on him, mouthing his ankles and growling playfully. "I don't want to play right now. Go on back to wherever you came from." Llyri tried again and began to walk off. The shinx was still following him.
Then it hit him. The pokeball! He had captured the shinx. Well, techincally the shinx had captured itself so Llyri wasn't precisely sure if it would work. "Well, I might as well try it." he sighed, holding out the pokeball. "Return!" In a flash of red light the shinx cub was gone. So that was it, huh? He'd just captured his first pokemon. Now that it had the scent of human all over it, the shinx would be unable to return to its family for a time, and if it was too weak to fight a pokeball he could hardly just leave it in the forest to be eaten by mightyena.
When he let it out again, the shinx was less confused than last time. It stretched its legs and let out a wide cat yawn. "All right, listen up little guy. You're with me now." Llyri started, but the cub had already dissappeared into the brush. Thinking his problem solved, he started walking again but before he'd taken another ten steps, something jumped out at him. The shinx cub attacked his feet again, rolling on its back and batting at his legs with its paws.
"Shinx!" it yowled inviting Llyri to join its game. The faint glow of its coat lit the otherwise dark forest with a soft blue light and Llyri admitted that it was very beautiful. He needed a pokemon anyway if he had to travel, right? With a pokemon that emitted light, he could venture into the darkest of caverns to sketch the wonders of the natural world like he'd always dreamed. Like the stars that lit travelor's paths at night, so this shinx could be his guide. He mused over what to call it, but the cub yanked him out of his thoughts by biting down on his ankle again. No matter, they could find a name together.

..Enter Flak.. In which Llyri learns the basics of being a trainer.
With his new shinx in tow, Llyri continued walking along the forest path..or at least what he thought was the forest path. How many times had he passed a tree stump that looke exactly like that one again? Hm..
Guidance, on the other hand, didn't seem the least bit worried about where they were. Unlike Llyri, he also didn't seem to be running out of energy. The shinx cub rolled around in the dry leaves, alternating between stalking real prey and Llyri's ankles. He almost managed to creep up to a starly, but it fluttered out from under his paws. With a disappointed mrawl, Guidance returned to his trainer's side, waiting to see what fun things they were going to do next.
It was getting dark. While Guidance's glowing coat allowed Llyri to at least see more than a few inches in front of his nose, there wasn't nearly enough light for map reading. Of course, Llyri had also completely neglected to pick up a map, so it didn't make much of a difference. The forest was as much alive at night as it was in the lazy afternoon sunshine, but it seemed much less welcoming. The chirping of the nincada seemed ominous and Llyri swore that he saw a few pairs of large reflective eyes staring back at him from within the trees. As it happened, one of them didn't scamper away as he approached. In fact, it wasn't an eye at all. As Llyri neared the light, he eventually stepped out of the trees and into a small clearing lit by a campfire. Sitting next to the campfire was a boy and his mightyena.
"Hey there!" greeted the other trainer. "A little lost are you?"
Llyri nodded, unsure of how to respond. Guidance peered around his legs to get a better idea of what was going on, still glowing softly.
"That's a pretty cool shinx you've got there. I've never seen one that glows before." continued the other trainer, oblivious to Llyri's unease. "Why don't you sit down and chat for a while. You're not going to make much headway in the dark. Unless you're into traveling by dark, of course, but you don't much look like a Nightrunner."
"Sure..thanks.." Llyri gratefully accepted a seat by the fire and a bowl of hot soup was placed in his hands.
"Try some of that! It's so spicy it'll melt your tongue off."
Llyri gulped a spoonful of the soup and struggled not to spit it right back out. He was right! While it wasn't actually acidic enough to really burn his mouth, the spicy soup had his nosareceptors screaming in protest. Ouch! Staring at it cautiously, he offered the bowl to Guidance, who took one lick and promptly sauntered off to the other side of the clearing. The shinx cub stuck out his tongue as if to examine it, gave up, and curled up next to the mightyena to nurse his hurt pride by ignoring Llyri.
The other trainer laughed. "Got an arrogant streak, has he? How long have you had him?"
"Er..I just caught him this afternoon." replied Llyri.
"And you're already letting him wander outside the pokeball? Well, he doesn't seem like he's about to run off. He must like you."
"I'm sorry, I didn't know. Was I supposed to keep him in the pokeball?"
"Ah hah! New trainer are you? Forgive me. My name's Flak and this Mightyena is my partner, Kaer. You are?"
Delirious he almost said, but changed his mind at the last second. Back home, he was Delirious. The name marked him as a psychic, even if he wasn't one. Here, he was himself. Here he could just be "Llyri. My shinx is called Guidance. Nice to meet you Flak and Kaer."

..Llyri's First Battle..Guidance vs. Kaer Mock BattleStadium Link
Mock Battle so I can figure out how to do this thing. In character, the story goes that Llyri's never battled before, so Flak decides to show him a thing or two. Kaer has been randomly devolved for the sake of fairness. We shall assume that Kaer won because I"m too lazy to finnish it.

 [Contest Application]
Screenname: CatCry What are you doing during the contest: Participating Character Name: Llyri (Delirious) Song you are using: Spotlight written by Springdragon (One of mine; If you'd like sheet music, I can write it up for you, but there's no accompaniment yet.) Which pokemon are you using during the concert: Shinx (Guidance) Which pokemon are you using in the battle portion: Shinx (Guidance) You character and pokemon's reaction to this contest:
Llyri contemplated the poster pasted to the brick wall above the communal rubbish bin. The edges were beginning to peel and fray, and it looked like it hadn't stood up well to the recent bout of rain. Brick walls weren't very good surfaces to tape things to in the first place. Seated at his heels, Guidance contemplated the poster as well, swishing his tail and periodically emitting static from the tip as he stared back at the glowing eyes of the somewhat waterstained umbreon and its rockstar trainer.
"CONTEST" the poster vividly proclaimed in bright yellow bolded letters. A contest! Llyri had been to a few pokemon contests back in Saffron, not that his sisters had approved. At every one of them, there had been beautiful pokemon performing graceful techniques with extrodinary skill. The trainers too, were sometimes just as extrodinary. As much as he longed to go, Llyri sighed and just continued staring for a few moments longer. His bike was still being repaired and he didn't know how much it would cost. At worst, it would have to be replaced. The entire frame was twisted out of shape. There was no way he could afford to go to a contest.
Guidance batted at his leg with a paw, shocking him lightly and diverting his attention. Deciding that the poster wasn't going to change no matter how hard he stared, the shinx cub decided to indulge in his other favorite activity; chewing on Llyri's boots. When Llyri looked back up, he caught the two crucial words scribbled into the very corner in an unobtrusive white font. "Accepting Contestants." Maybe there was a way they could go after all.
Attacks your pokemon will be using: Thunder Fang, Bite, Flash, Light Screen (I assume, since there is no system for reduced accuracy, Flash and Light Screen will be a normal damaging attack. If I'm not allowed to use effect moves like Flash, I request the substitutes of Takedown and Thunder Wave for the battle. (Or I suppose I could just do the battle with only two moves. It's not like it will affect the outcome.) I also would like to know if we're allowed to use more than the allotted moves for the performance. It says the display must include all 4 moves, but doesn't specify that it can ONLY have those four. I would like to use moves such as Flash and Light Screen for the display, but they are not compatible with the current battle system.) What you and your pokemon will be wearing: During the performance, Guidance will have silver reflectors set up around the stage to magnify the lighting. He will also be wearing three silver cuffs on his tail, an elegant metal V collar with a star pendant, and slim silver bracelets with detailed metal wings that curve outwards, on his front legs just above the electricty bands. The wings also magnify the lights. He will also have glitter brushed into his fur (which glows naturally).
Llyri will be wearing his normal shoes (He only owns one pair.), which are black buckled boots with neon turquoise soles and tongues. He will have both wristguards on. They are black with a neon turquoise band. Since they are stiff pieces of cloth that cover his hands and part of his forearm, he normally only wears the left one. He has also put neon turquoise detailing and sewn some shiny silver chain onto his black shorts and black vest for the occasion, and will not be wearing a shirt underneath it because he couldn't think of anything that looked cool. To ornament his arms, he picked up a silver sharpie and drew some swirly designs. They didn't show up well enough, so he got a black sharpie and added some accents. Of course, to pull it all together, some standard stage makeup, because under stagelights, everybody is either washed out or shiny, and a pair of blue cat ears to match Guidance, the shinx.

..Winter Concert.. Winter Event Contest with a Music Theme
"Under BRIGHT LIGHTS! in the Late Nights! No, Guidance, you're supposed to flash twice on that line. Do the Light Screen and a flash on the word spotlight. Got it?"
"Shinx!" Guidance nodded and flicked the end of his tail, sending a spark into the air.
"Okay, do you think we can run through it one more time from the beginning?"
"Shinx!" Another nod and a few more sparks.
"Good boy. Let's go." Llyri waved his hand in the air, a signal for Flak to restart the lights. Flak gave a return thumbs up and the stage darkened.
A moment later, the soundtrack began with a series of fast D's and low percussion. Flak slid up the volume just as the opening chord began, cueing a bright Flash.
"Hey, yeah! I'm livin' the way I always wanted to." Llyri breathed a mental sigh of relief as he struck a dramatic, yet docile pose. If the timing went well in the beginning, they usually did pretty well as long as he got the secondary cues in. "Hey, yeah! I'm livin' the way I always dreamed of. And there's nobody gonna tell me what I can't do!" he sang, confidently looking up at the rows of empty seats with a more self-assured expression than he felt when the beat sped up. On the small platform above him, Guidance made the reflectors shine with a Light Screen as Flak turned on the stage lights.
"But those BRIGHT LIGHTS! in the, late nights, though I'm working sleepy days.." Two flashes this time, good. Llyri held out 'days' until the light screen faded. "Can't compare to the SPOTLIGHT shining on the stage!" This time, a circular Light Screen above him followed by a quick Flash to illuminate him, as Flak turned on the spotlight.
"With a song to guide me and the sound behind me, I'll grab the mike and sing my way."
'big' and 'flair' was supposed to be the idea. Llyri got the feeling that they just looked silly more than anything, but he concentrated on being dramatic. The impressions they gave off were at least half in the mind and if he thought he looked cool whipping the microphone cord around as he sang, it was more likely that other people would too..he hoped.
"Hey Yeah! I'm gonna get there someday. Hey yeah! I'm gonna be there soon. And if I work hard and I sing loud there's nothing I can't do!"
'Cause those BRIGHT LIGHTS in the Late Night, though I'm working sleepy days. Can't compare to the SPOTLIGHT shining on the stage!
With a song to guide me and the sound behind me, I'll grab the mike and sing my way.
And those BRIGHT LIGHTS in the Late Night, though I'm working sleepy days. Can't compare to the SPOTLIGHT shining on the stage!
So I'm beggin' you to let me go; to see me catch my dream. Under BRIGHT LIGHTS in the Late Night you'll hear me sing!" he finished strongly, striking a dramatic crouched pose for Guidance to springboard off his back and over his outstretched arm with a final Flash just as Flak shut off the entire system, leaving nothing but the glow of the shinx's coat to light the stage.
Llyri's voice had a haunting quality to it that was ill suited to this upbeat genre of music. It was particularly evident in the absence of background during the last few measures.

"Guidance..interesting name. He got a story?"
Llyri shrugged. "He glows. Does Kaer have a story?"
"I dunno." Flak replied, scratching his mightyena's shoulder affectionately. "She was named before I got her. I've had Kaer since we were both liddle things. You could say we've grown up together."
