It didn't take long for Hayes to go and pour more honey on the side of a tree, despite it being a different one than before; he didn't want to run into the same Wurmple after all. Once he'd finished he made his way back to Teddy and Matt, discarding the portion of the hive along the way and trying unsuccessfully to get all of the honey off of his hands, as he'd already gotten it on a couple of the Pokeballs on his side. After he'd made it back to the two of them Hayes set down his bag and removed the Pokeballs from his side that had honey on them, including Bulbasaur's, and started to absent-mindedly clean it off of them when Matt asked about scary stories and Teddy sat down, obviously anticipating one. "I, uh, forgot that I left something at the honey... tree..." Hayes said before Matt had a chance to start the story, turning around and heading back in the direction he'd come from, leaving his bag and Pokéballs on the ground.

Before Matt could even begin his story, Hayes suddenly got up nervously saying he had forgot something and quickly left. "But you'll miss the story!" Matt called out as their friend literally ran into the forest alone as it was getting dark instead of listening to a scary story. "Oh well... He'll be back." It was starting to get dark, and it seemed like the perfect setting for a scary story. Matt got comfortable, crossing his legs and leaning forward towards Teddy. "Alright, so... It was a fall evening on Route 17, and we had just locked up the Daycare for the night. We were taking care of a pair of Tyranitars. They seemed to be doing fine but I decided to check on them anyway. I walked into the back, and that's when I saw it..." Matt said, pausing for dramatic effect. "That's when we found... an egg! We had no idea where it came from, oooOOOooo!~"

Wani-Wani was sat in Teddy's lap whilst Matt recounted his scary story, his owner clutching him tight as the story went to reach the climax. Teddy had loved scary stories since he was a boy, hearing all of the trainers who would visit Cianwood City their stories of what they encountered on their journey. The best stories always came from those who stopped off in Ecruteak City. They always came along with the scariest.
Teddy was so engrossed in the story, he didn't notice Hayes still hadn't returned. He assumed his friend would return soon though, it was a shame he didn't seem to have the stomach for the frightening. When it came to the big pay off from Matt's story, Teddy gasped "An egg?! Where did it appear from? A Phantom Egg?!"

Hayes exhaled as he looked around, hands on his sides. He was in the middle of trying to remember whether or not he'd seen a nearby tree before or if he was imagining it, when he knew he had to accept it... he'd gotten lost in the forest. It's my own fault. He thought as he walked, looking around in vain. As soon as he'd heard 'scary stories' he decided to walk off, and it hadn't occurred to him that it was already getting dark; and that was a couple hours ago. At this point it was a small feat that he was able to see where he was walking at all, and here he was attempting to find a way back to where Matt and Teddy were... and his bag, too, which he'd forgot to bring as he walked off and left camp in a hurry.
"Alone, without any supplies, and no idea where I am." Hayes said as he shook his head, unable to believe it. "And I can't see a... thing...?" He trailed off, distracted by a floating light that appeared in the darkness. It didn't appear to be moving, but it was eerie all the same and reminded him of a few unpleasant experiences.
After a moment of staring, he knew it wasn't in him to go and see what it was. He was already lost in a forest and surrounded by bugs, so he didn't plan on making it any worse by investigating an unnatural light; not that he'd be keen on it in any other scenario, but at night? That wasn't happening. He started to head in the opposite direction, but paused as it began to move in the same direction after he took a step, and promptly stopped as soon as he did. Is it...? He wondered, lifting his foot and slowly taking another step... and another... until it started to float in the general direction he was walking. A chill ran down his spine as he stopped and watched it do the same, knowing it was following him; waiting to see where he was going before it budged. He couldn't lead a ghost, or whatever it was, back to camp... not that he knew where it was, but still. It'd have to be dealt with before he returned.

An hour had passed and Hayes was tapped, having spent the last hour attempting to slip away from whatever it was that had been following him. Anywhere he hid, it found him. If he tried to hurry, it didn't have any trouble keeping up... not that it was a good idea to attempt in the dark, as he'd learned after stumbling around in the forest. It had all finally gotten to him, however, so he'd decided to stop and take a break, leaning against the side of a tree with one hand as he took the opportunity to catch his breath; or that was the plan until it caught in his throat as the light re-appeared, but this time... it started to approach him. Hayes squinted at it as it came closer, the light of it in stark contrast to the rest of the forest, but he didn't move. He'd done all he could, and he knew if it wanted to catch him it wasn't anything he could avoid, but... something about it seemed familiar as it came closer, as if he knew it from somewhere...
"Rotom?" Hayes asked, bewildered. "Roo~~tom~!"It answered, pleased.

Hayes didn't know how it happened, but in front of him was Rotom; a Pokémon he'd been around as long as he could remember, even if they weren't all wonderful memories. It was the reason he couldn't handle scary stories at all, actually, as it had a problem with haunting... and possessing anything it could. "I... what...?" Hayes said, or tried to, as the Electric/Ghost type flew around in front of him. "What are you doing here? Actually, how are you here at all?" Hayes asked after a moment, having no idea how it had found him in Viridian Forest. As you'd expect it didn't answer him, and instead continued zipping around in the air in front of him, looking as pleased as he'd seen it in a long time. Hayes shifted a bit and removed his hand from the tree he'd been leaning on, accidentally dragging it across something sticky on the tree. Sap, maybe? Or... honey.
Once he realized it was honey, Hayes straightened up and looked around, suddenly feeling as if he knew where he was. This was the tree he'd put the honey on earlier in the day, he was sure of it... through all the stumbling around in the dark, he'd somehow ended up at it again. As Hayes processed where he was he started to notice a strange sound, and after a moment he looked down in the direction it'd been coming from and saw a Munchlax staring up at him and Rotom as it licked the honey off the tree; or what honey had flowed down the bark and was within reach, anyway. Hayes instinctively reached for a Pokeball, but dropped it as soon as he felt the honey on his hand on the ball.
Munchlax glanced at it after it fell, but it's attention returned to Rotom a moment later as it had floated down to the Pokémon's level, looking displeased and as if it had a larger charge than normal; which he knew wasn't a good sign. "I don't think-" He began in an attempt to calm it, until the wild Munchlax took a few steps closer to Rotom and licked it. It didn't seem to think it a wise decision as it immediately made a face, and Hayes could only assume it didn't find electricity all that tasty, but the damage had been done. Hayes immediately put the tree in between himself and the Pokémon, and a moment later Rotom discharged the energy it had been building; striking everything around it, including the tree he hid behind, as well as Munchlax. After it was safe to come out, Hayes stepped around the tree and found Rotom once again in a good mood as it floated in the space above Munchlax, who had fainted.
It zipped over to him once it saw he'd returned, and Hayes didn't quite know what to do as he stared at it. It must've been following him, or else there was no way it could've found him in the forest... but had it been following him since he'd left the house? Had it been out of sight the entire time, until he spotted it in the dark? It was hard to believe, but he wouldn't put it past the Pokémon; he already knew how determined it could be after all the years it'd been around him. "I can't believe you followed me all the way out here." Hayes said, shaking his head as he did so. Rotom flew around him a few times as he spoke, pausing after a moment and staring at the Pokeballs on his side... and then it happened. It darted into one of them, and the ball it flew into accepted it without any difficulty; a moment later it made a confirmatory noise, and he knew it was done. After the surprise had subsided, Hayes decided to spend the night under the tree as he was exhausted and didn't want to get too far away from it; it'd be his starting point in the morning. As he fell asleep, Munchlax gnawed on the honey-covered Pokeball until it triggered it, accidentally catching itself.

"We don't know! It just showed up!" Matt responded excitedly to Teddy's question about where this Phantom Egg came from. "The Trainer who dropped off the Pokemon seemed really excited to get it though..." Matt went on to tell a few more Daycare scary stories, all ending with them finding a phantom egg. While the stories were being told he sent out Bulbasaur and Mudkip so they could be included. His two Pokemon laid at his sides as he told the scary stories of his Daycare days. About an hour passed and Matt yawned between stories when he realized how dark it had gotten. "Oh man, when did it get so late? We should probably set up camp and get some rest. Don't wanna be out walking around this late, we might get lost." Matt suggested, petting Mudkip and Bulbasaur while he waited for Teddy's input.

Time quickly slipped away from the two of them, surrounded by their Pokemon and scary stories, Teddy just couldn't stop listening to them and constantly being surprised about the mystery phantom eggs that would appear behind Matt. Teddy attempted to blurt out some of his own scary stories but most of the time they ended in Teddy discovering sand in places it shouldn't be in. Matt eventually came up with the idea of them calling it a night. Teddy looked up at the star filled sky and was shocked to see that it had indeed gotten late. "Night Matt" Propping up his backpack under his head, Teddy lay down in the leaves, realising he still didn't own a sleeping bag, his Pokemon all huddled up close to him and they fell into a deep sleep. He hoped he would dream about what his journey had ahead of him. This was the end of Teddy's first day as a Pokemon Trainer.
I wonder where Hayes got to. were his last thoughts.

"G'night, Teddy." Matt said through a yawn. All these spooky stories had taken up a lot more time than he had realized. By the time they finished and decided to get ready for bed it was already well into night. Matt scooted his Pokemon off his lap so he could stand up and get into his bag. It took a few moments of digging through Pokeballs and Potions, but eventually he pulled a large sleeping bag out. It was really convenient he could fit so much in his bag. He quickly shook out the bag before placing it down on the ground and closing his bag, putting it next to him. He then unzipped the bag a bit and crawled in. Mudkip and Bulbasaur both immediately climbed into the bag, crawling around underneath before settling. Matt chuckled and patted his two Pokemon through the sleeping bag before laying down himself, resting his head on the pillow and quickly drifting to sleep. It had been a very long first day of his Pokemon adventure after all.

It had been a long night, but as the sun rose and started to shine in through the canopy, Hayes knew it was over; and that he'd be able to return to camp as soon as he got up, now that he knew where he was and would be able to see where he was going. He wasn't in a hurry to wake up, though. It didn't feel like he'd gotten much sleep and he knew if it was only starting to brighten it was still early in the morning, so Matt and Teddy might not even be awake yet.
I'm glad I remembered a blanket... it feels like I'm still in a bed. He thought to himself as he continued to rest his eyes, feeling quite snug as he laid there, until it occurred to him that he didn't remember a blanket. That had been in the bag he'd left at camp, and he'd left it there when he walked off into the forest the night before... but if he didn't have a blanket, then why did it feel like he was wrapped up in something? The realization made him open his eyes and look around.
After he'd opened his eyes, the thing he noticed before anything else was that it didn't look like where he'd gone to sleep. It was hard to tell as everything in the forest looked a bit similar, but it definitely wasn't the same spot. That didn't make any sense, though, as there's no way he could've woken up in a different spot; it wasn't like he sleep-walked. That's when he noticed it, as once he'd realized he wasn't where he should've been, he tried to get up. A brief moment of struggle later and he found he couldn't actually stand up... or move at all, really. Hayes shifted his gaze down and saw the reason; he wasn't wrapped in a blanket, he was wrapped in string. It covered around three-quarters of his body, reaching up past his elbows, and kept him firmly immobile as he started looking around in a panic... and that's when he saw it. On an adjacent tree, a Spinarak was crawling over it and inspecting the honey it'd found and ignoring him.
"Uh... guys? Matt, Teddy?" Hayes said in a hushed tone as he didn't want to alert the Pokémon, but it stopped inspecting the honey a moment after he'd said it and turned to stare at him. "Guys...?Anyone?"He repeated, but louder as he tried to avoid looking into its beady eyes.

Teddy awoke with a sharp jolt from his dream. He couldn't quite recollect what had happened. All he remembered was that infernal music. That drunk clock. All he did know was that he had to wake up. Hovering over him, descending from a branch was a Burmy in leaf cloak. "Ohmygod" Teddy yelled, jumping from his spot on the ground, forcing his Pokemon into the same state of alertness as their trainer. "Brrrrr-me!" the Pokemon declared. All of Teddy's now grumpy and bleary Pokemon all growled out a selection of cries to show their distaste over being awoken. "That's right guys! Plain rude. Wani-Wani! I say we show this Burmy that those who wake us don't get off easy!" Teddy shouted, Wani-Wani flipping forward into the fray. "Toto-bwaaaale"Totodile cried, signalling the start of their battle.
The battle was fierce, the Burmy started off with a striking tackle that nearly defeated Wani-Wani easily. But he held on barely, letting out a water gun attack. Something Teddy had never really seen his best friend do before. "Wani-Wani! I can let Bulbasaur take over if you need a rest!" Teddy shouted, Bulbasaur running to Teddy's side and growling at Burmy. Wani-Wani however had other plans, holding his arm out to block Bulbasaur from joining the battle. "You're right. Sorry buddy." Teddy said, pulling a potion from his bag and healing Totodile, the Burmy looking on determined. Teddy chuckled to himself, realising this was the second time his Pokemon had refused to leave the battle and fought on. What a stubborn team he was collecting.
Totodile and Burmy exchanged a couple more intense stares. It seemed like the Burmy was trying to protect itself somehow by amassing more leaves. Eventually it grew tired and tackled Wani-Wani again. Then the final blow was struck as Wani-Wani delivered a last Water Gun attack, causing the Burmy to faint. Wani-Wani fell backwards onto the ground, out of breath. Teddy, carrying Metapod and Bulbasaur ran over to their comrade. "What a battle buddy. You did well. Here, back in your Pokeball you go. All of you" Teddy said and with a warm hug he collected his Pokemon back into their portable homes. Standing up he realised Matt had gone, then in the distance he heard cries of terror. "Hayes..."

It was early in the morning when Matt first woke up. The sun was barely up and the forest was quiet. Matt had to wake up early every morning when he worked at the day care, and his sleep schedule had been programmed permanently that way because of it. Matt silently stretched in his sleeping bag before slipping out of it, waking his two Pokemon in the process. Yawning and rubbing his eyes, he looked around the camp. Teddy was asleep a few feet away, but Hayes was still missing. "Bulbasaur, Mudkip; wake up guys. Let's go find Hayes." Matt whispered to his Pokemon, not wanting to wake Teddy. He was hoping Hayes had come back after they had gone to sleep and gotten up before him, but it seemed like he had been gone all night. Bulbasaur was the first to crawl out from under the sleeping bag, followed by Mudkip. However, there was movement under the sleeping bag, and Matt furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. He slowly walked up to the bag and crouched in front of the top of the bag before lifting it up. Staring back at him was a pair of bright blue eyes and a devilish grin full of teeth. Before Matt could even react, the Pokemon shot past him like a shadow and he suddenly felt a weight on his shoulder. Turning his head he was then face to face with a wild Sableye. "Saaaaaaaa~" It grumbled. Instead of being frightened, Matt was more confused than anything. "Hey there, aren't you a bit far from home?" Matt asked, since Sableye was a Pokemon native to his home region of Hoenn. He wasn't sure what a Sableye was doing in a forest in Kanto, but it obviously was comfortable being around humans. It actually seemed interested in Matt's reaction, or lack there of, and hopped off his shoulder to get a better look at him. Matt assumed that it had crawled into his sleeping bag at some point in the night. Despite its menacing appearance, the Sableye seemed to be pretty friendly and reminded Matt of his home. "We gotta go look for my friend, do you wanna come with us Sableye?" Matt asked. The Sableye stared at him for a moment before grinning and nodding. "Saaa ble ble ble~" After leaving camp he figured checking his honey tree was as good a place as any to start. He jogged towards the tree being followed by Bulbasaur, Mudkip, and Sableye, all of which were out of their Pokeballs and following behind at various speeds. While jogging Matt heard the faint sound of what sounded like Hayes' voice coming from the direction he was heading. "Hayes?" Matt called out, picking up the pace towards Hayes' voice. Matt stopped a few feet from the tree he had placed honey on, seeing a Spinarak on it. On a nearby tree he also saw a large web nest and heard another faint cry coming from it. "No way..." Matt mumbled to himself, piecing together what had happened and trying not to laugh at the situation. "Mudkip, Sableye; go help out Hayes. Bulbasaur, let's take care of this Spinarak!" Matt said to his team. Mudkip began skipping towards Hayes with Sableye tailing behind while Matt and Bulbasaur got closer to the tree. As soon as Bulbasaur got close the Spinarak turned to face them and pointed its back at Bulbasaur and used Scary Face, dropping Bulbasaur's speed. It was a short battle, involving spamming a lot of Tackle a lot, but eventually the Spinarak fainted. While Matt and Bulbasaur were battling the Spinarak, Sableye and Mudkip were trying to get Hayes down from the tree. Mudkip stood directly under the nest and kept trying to jump up to reach him, but its legs were too short to reach. Sableye just stood there watching for a moment before quickly climbing the tree and stopping at the branch where the nest was attached to. With a devious grin and gleam in its eyes, Sableye raised one claw and in a single swipe, detached the web from the tree and sent Hayes falling to the ground. Mudkip leaped out of the way before Hayes fell to the ground. Luckily the webbing cushioned the fall and broke open from the force of the fall. As soon as Hayes landed Mudkip hopped on onto the webs and over to him, oblivious and as cheerful as ever. Matt was heading back over to the nest after his battle by the time Sableye cut him down. "There you are! I see you were wrapped up in something important, eh?" Matt said with a dumb grin, holding a hand out for Hayes.

It didn't look good for Hayes, stuck in a web and at the mercy of a Spinarak, until he heard a familiar voice. Matt? He thought, daring to hope he wasn't imagining it... and then he appeared; all of his Pokémon in tow, including a new one.
Hayes squirmed in the web, attempting to free himself as he watched Matt battle the Pokémon that had captured him in it, thinking he'd need to wait until he won before he'd be free as it didn't look like Mudkip would be able to reach him... and then he was falling. At first, he thought he'd succeeded in dislodging himself from the web but as he fell he saw the Sableye in the tree and knew that it had cut him loose. It didn't have the most trust-worthy looking face, but all the same it was a welcome sight for Hayes, even after he landed on the ground and knew he'd be sore the following morning. At least there's a next morning at all... He thought as he gave Mudkip a half-hearted smile after he'd noticed it had hurried to his side after he'd fallen.
A moment later Matt was in front of him and offering to help him up as he quipped about the situation, and Hayes looked down and saw that the fall had broken the nearly finished cocoon he'd been in. Hayes took Matt's hand and pulled himself up, pulling the trainer into an embrace after he'd gotten back on his feet. There were no words for what he'd done, and Hayes wouldn't forget that he'd saved him.

The battle against Burmy was won. Teddy sighed with relief. This forest was proving to be quite the test for him and his new team. So far all of the Pokemon he'd acquired encountered battles that made them give it their all. He thought back to the first battle he had with Rattata using his Bulbasaur of whom took down the Pokemon in one fell swoop. It felt like weeks since that encounter.
Suddenly Teddy was snapped out of his reminiscing when he remembered that Hayes had been screaming. He went to pick up his bag and throw it over his shoulder when he heard a yelping noise from within. If it hadn't been for the additional weight, the yelp definitely gave away the fact Teddy was not alone.

Matt was caught off-guard when Hayes took his hand and pulled him into a hug after getting up. Matt chuckled and patted his back before pulling back. "Can't let our journey end that quickly, right?" Matt said with a smile, before turning to Bulbasaur. "And good battle buddy, way to beat that Spinarak. Now c'mon so I can heal you." He praised, kneeling down to Bulbasaur While Matt was healing Bulbasaur with a Potion, Sableye would drop down from the tree and land on Hayes' shoulder, nonchalantly staying there with a content grin on its face. After healing Bulbasaur, Matt returned Bulbasaur and Mudkip to their Pokeballs before approaching Hayes and Sableye. "Leave him alone for now, you little gremlin." He said teasingly as he bopped his new Pokemon on the head with a Pokeball, actually capturing it. After attaching his three Pokemon to his belt he would turn his attention back to Hayes. "So what ended up happening last night? We expected you to come back and then we kinda lost track of time and passed out." Matt asked, curious as to what happened to Hayes last night. Before Hayes could even answer though, Matt's eyes lit up and he ran over to the tree. "One sec!" He poured the last bit of honey he had back on the tree before running back to Hayes. "Sorry bout that, figured I might as well reapply some Honey while we're here. Tell about what happened on our way, let's see if Teddy's up yet."

"Right." Hayes said in response after Matt had broken off the embrace, taking a minute to enjoy the feeling of being able to move again as his friend turned his attention to Bulbasaur and began to use a Potion on it.
While Matt was busy with that, the Pokémon he'd noticed earlier dropped down onto his shoulder. Any other time Hayes might've been alarmed by it, but after the night (and morning) he'd had and seeing it aid in the rescue... it was still unnerving, but not as unnerving as it would've been. He nodded at it, and a second later Matt tapped a Pokeball on its head and caught it; the fact that it had still been a wild Pokémon was a surprise, and he was glad he didn't know it at the time it landed on him. After Matt had put the Pokeball on his belt he turned to ask about what had happened after Hayes had left the camp, but ran off and put some more honey on the tree before he had a chance to answer.
"It's a bit of a long story, but..." Hayes sighed, agreeing to share it as they decided to go back to where they'd set up camp and see if Teddy had woken up. And so, on the way back Hayes told Matt about the night he'd had; starting from how he'd wandered around after leaving camp and gotten lost as it turned dark, including the moment when he realized he didn't have any Pokémon with him, and the ominous light that appeared in the distance and started to follow him around the forest. A chill ran down his spine as he remembered that, as it had been a harrowing experience... even knowing how it ended as he did, and what it had actually been. As he recalled that part of the night, he looked down at his belt and stared at the Pokeballs that should've held the culprit, and had a feeling they didn't. It was only a feeling, but it had him pause and leave Matt hanging at the part about the strange light as he reached down to check the balls...
And then Rotom appeared darting out in front of Hayes and "laughing" as it did, glad it had succeeded in frightening him. "And there it is." He sighed.
