☆ ☆【The first door closest to her that she opened revealed to be only a linen closet, albeit with only a few towels, washcloths, and other bits and pieces inside that were either caked in dust or looked like they hadn’t been used or even washed in years. There was also an extremely pungent, thousand-year-old musty smell that practically exploded out of the closet as soon as she opened the door. ”Eugh…” Zoey blanched in disgust as she slammed the door shut, quickly waving her hands in the air around to try to clear the last of the heavy odor that still lingered. The second room appeared to be a small bedroom of some sort, probably a guest bedroom since it was far too small to be the master. A simple bed with white sheets and a beige coverlet sat close to the wall opposite from the door, with a mahogany wood bed chest set below the foot of it and a similarly made nightstand close to the right side of it. A low-set chest of drawers sat against the wall opposite from the bed, and the walls were covered with simple yet ornate beige wallpaper that matched the coverlet with minimal décor, primarily paintings of natural scenes and Pokemon. Pale light spilled into the room from the single curtain-covered window beyond the bed itself, which was enough to be able to see most things. Zoey hummed curiously, taking in the sight of the room as she stepped inside with Eir, the Ninetales practically glued to her side as she cast nervous glances around the room.
So far, nothing had tried to jump out at them, no flickering lights or sudden loud bangs… Still, Zoey knew better than to let her guard down even when it seemed like nothing in particular was happening. Again, they were likely just trying to lure them into a false sense of security, let the tension and atmosphere build before unleashing another scare at them. She noticed a few interesting items atop the chest of drawers, primarily a chessboard with all of its pieces set in place, a small pocket mirror, and a miniature mannequin-like figure that appeared to be posable. ”Doesn’t look like there’s much in here either…” Zoey murmured as she looked about, pausing momentarily when she noticed a small envelope made of parchment sitting on top of the bed chest. ”Huh… could’ve sworn that wasn’t there a second ago…” she said with a note of inquiry in her tone. Had it been there the whole time and she’d just happen to overlook it first time? Nonetheless, she picked it up, carefully breaking the red wax seal that held it closed, and opened it up. Inside was a small sheet of old-fashioned vellum paper, which seemed rather ragged and burnt a bit around the edges, with smallish text written on it in a smooth, calligraphic style that appeared to have been made with an elegant, practiced hand.
”Dear most honored guest,
Since you have made it thus far in your excursion of this cursed domicile, I would like to bestow upon you a gift as a sign of goodwill. However, there is a bit of a catch, as a practitioner of the fine arts and an admirer of puzzles I cannot simply allow you to have it without a bit of a test first. I will, however, let you know that your reward is somewhere inside this room and nowhere else you have already been before. Tell me, are you a lover of riddles? This is your only clue to the location of your gift, and make sure to not overthink it.

Zoey inwardly groaned as she read the note, of course the clue to find this apparent ‘gift’ had to be a riddle of all things. Hell, even just by his name, Orpheus certainly struck her as the type who would be a major lover of riddles and puzzles and all kinds of games that tricked and challenged the mind. She couldn’t say she was very good at things like that, but still… if there was a reward to be had for her efforts then she was going to give it her damnedest shot. Thirty men, only two women, black and white, and an eternal war were the primary parts of the riddle that really stood out to her… Orpheus had said in the note not to overthink it, so apparently this was meant to be relatively easy to solve. Which was certainly correct, of course, because Zoey had seen only one particular object in this room that matched the riddle’s description to a T. ”Chess pieces,” she said aloud with a nod of affirmation, already moving over to more closely examine the chessboard on the dresser drawer. It didn’t look like there was anything unusual on the board itself… maybe it was underneath it then? Zoey gently moved all the pieces off of it before picking the board itself up and carefully lifting it up. Sure enough, just underneath it was a brown colored disc that she instantly recognized as a TM, more specifically for a Ground-type move based on the color alone. ”Neat!” she cheered with a grin, swiping it up and tucking it away in her TM case for later. She set the board back down, and rearranged the pieces back into their proper places to the best of her ability before turning to head back out into the main area. Seemed that they had seen all that there was to offer here, it was probably time to move on to the next floor from here.】☆ ☆

☆ ☆【Well, they had apparently seen all that they could’ve possibly seen here, so surely that last door at the end of this elevated part led to a set of stairs or something that should take them up to the next floor, right? She hadn’t seen any other doors in the downstairs portion of the room that led to anywhere else, so there was no way this was just a huge dead end… At least she hoped so. Closing the door to the little bedroom behind them, she and her Pokemon made their way towards the final door on this floor, more than ready to move on to see what else lay ahead for them up on the higher stories. Upon approaching it, Zoey noticed how much more ornately decorated this particular door seemed in comparison to the others, from the intricately decorated panes of frosted glass arranged in an arching shape just above the top of the doorframe to the brass-colored door knocked in the shape of a female Pyroar’s head. ”Rather strange, don’t think there’s really any point of havin’ a knocker on any other door besides the front one, right?” Zoey couldn’t help but comment, reaching out to take hold of the golden knob and turning to open. About halfway in its rotation, the knob suddenly stuck and wouldn’t go any further. ”What the… it’s locked?!” the woman exclaimed in disbelief, forcefully turning the knob a few more times in the hopes that it was just jammed and needed a bit more elbow grease to get open. No dice, it was clearly locked up tight like a bank vault.
”s**t… Where the hell is the key for it then?” she muttered as she gave up on trying to open the door for it. Surely there had to be a key for it somewhere on this floor, but it could be hidden anywhere at this point. She could spend hours just trying to look for it, and she would rather not have to deal with checking every corner and crevice for something so small and easy to hide. Although, now that she was closer, she noticed there was something stuck in the iron ‘mane’ of the Pyroar door knocker, which appeared to be a rolled up sheet of parchment. Ah, she supposed that she would have to solve another one of Orpheus’s riddles to be able to find the key. What the hell, she’d bite, the woman carefully extracting the paper from its place in the knocker and rolling it open to read the contents inside.
”As I am sure you have already guessed, being able to move to the next floor will require solving another puzzle. Think of it as my way of keeping things a bit more… interesting. The key is hidden on this floor somewhere, but of course it would be no fun to simply let you search for it on your own when it could be anywhere at any time. So to help speed things along, I will offer to you a little hint in the form of a riddle to at least set you on the right path.

Of course, of ******** course, she supposed it would be safe to assume that riddles and puzzles like this would be more of a common thing as they made their way through this haunted house. Alright then, if that was how Orpheus wanted to play, Zoey was more than willing to play along too. She wasn’t going to let him outwit her if she could help it, even if this sort of stuff wasn’t necessarily her strong suit. ”Alright then… So it always demands an answer, but never asks questions… What could it be then?” she spoke aloud, brows furrowed in deep thought as she turned to look around the room. This would be a bit more difficult to solve than the chess riddle, for sure, but Zoey felt that she could solve it fairly easily if she could just narrow it down to a small list of things it could possibly be."Maybe it was something we saw already?"Eir offered in an attempt to be helpful, the Ninetales humming thoughtfully as she mulled over the riddle in her own head. All throughout the house so far, they had come across a multitude of interesting knick-knacks and such, some that certainly stood out a lot more than others. It might be a bit of a stretch, but surely that was on the right track as to give a bit more insight into where they should try looking for the key, right?】☆ ☆

☆ ☆【What always demanded an answer… but never asked any questions? This one was a bit more difficult than the last one, but certainly not unsolvable. Only issue was that there was a lot more ground that could potentially be covered with this one. Still, she had a pretty good feeling about this, and Eir had offered up a pretty important-sounding clue. Zoey couldn’t help but feel that perhaps she had been looking it not too long ago, especially given how they seemed to really like their weird odds-and-ends memorabilia and antique items from centuries ago. That was probably where they should start looking then, as she and her entourage made their way back down the stairs to the main floor of the living room. She tried to think back on what had especially stood out to her as they had made their way through the house. There were the multitude of cat Pokemon statues that were littered all over the place, the portrait of the old woman in the dining room, the phone in the living room… Wait a second… Zoey’s eyes unconsciously drifted over towards the wall-mounted rotary phone she had looked at not too long ago. Yes, a phone! A phone always demanded an answer when it rang, but would never ask any questions, it all made much more sense now! Moving over to the phone, Zoey quickly checked on top of it to see if the key was hidden out in the open. Nothing, so that meant it had to be in the little drawer-like compartment, which was definitely a more reasonable place to keep a key.
Carefully pulling open the little drawer, Zoey was greeted with the sight of a small stack of little paper slips, along with other assorted items like stamps, an assortment of loose buttons, and even a couple thumbtacks. Reaching inside, she cleared away the rest of the junk inside the compartment, grinning widely upon seeing the little silver key, buried at the bottom beneath all this crap. ”Aha! Got it,” she exclaimed as she swiped it, hastily stuffing the rest of the other bits and pieces back inside where they belonged. Holding the key up triumphantly, Zoey headed back up the stairs with her entourage in tow, inserting the key into the lock of the door and turning it. Sure enough, she heard the deadbolt slide back in with a satisfying ‘click’ to signify that it had been unlocked, and she wasted no time turning the knob and flinging the door open to reveal a stairwell. Seemed the only way to go from here was up, though there was also a single side door against the wall opposite from the stairs leading back out.”I see you have managed to survive quite well so far,”spoke a familiar voice, Zoey blinking a bit as Orpheus seemed to suddenly appear out of nowhere. Although, considering that Zorua and Zoroark were masters at creating illusions, it certainly wasn’t unusual that he had been using his abilities to render himself invisible up until now. ”Heh, well it takes a lot more than just black cats, creepy death photos, and ringin’ phones to really scare me, y’know?” the woman said with a grin, crossing her arms as she flashed a challenging smirk at the Zoroark, ”You’ll have to really bring yer A-game for the next two floors, just as a warnin’ to ya~” Orpheus didn’t seem at all fazed as he simply flashed a toothy smile back to her, performing a slight flourish with his hand as he bowed.”So I can see. Well, I can assure you that the next floors will be a bit more… difficult to traverse through,”he responded lightly with a soft chuckle,”I will admit that I do enjoy a challenge from time to time. Of course, since this was the transition point to the next floor… ”Hey Eir, if ya really don’t wanna keep goin’, then this’ll be yer first chance to leave,” she spoke up as she glanced towards the Ninetales with a small smile, ”I imagine the scares’ll only get more intense on the next two floors.” The ice fox bit her lip underneath her mask as she eyed the exit door. Arceus, it was so tempting, and she was definitely feeling that it was better to just quit before she got too deep into the thick of it… Still, a part of her wanted to keep going, if only to see what lay in store for them on the next floor.”I… I’ll keep going,”she quickly spoke up, trying to keep her stuttering under control as she nodded in affirmation to Zoey,”I’ll at least try to survive the next floor… and if it’s too much, then I’ll leave and wait for you outside when another opportunity comes.”Again, she was already feeling that heavy pit of doubt in her stomach that she was going to end up regretting this, but in some sense she was still determined to push onwards if just to prove that she wasn’t going to chicken out after just completing the first part of this horrible haunted house experience.】☆ ☆

Auf weidersehen for now, my dearest Mädchen… I hope to see you again soon~”With that, the Zoroark twirled his fox-headed cane once more, and in the blink of an eye vanished into thin air again.”If you are still in one piece, that is…”came a soft, hushed whisper, one last word from the strange Zoroark before his presence left the room completely. ”Alright, time to head on up then,” Zoey cut in with a small smile, gesturing for her Pokemon to come along as they ascended the stairs. Arceus only knew what the next floor would have in store for them. Upon reaching the top of the stairwell, the first thing that greeted them was a hallway, decorated with small chairs, fancily furnished chairs, more odd trinkets scattered about, and lots more paintings on the walls. Quite a few of them were ones Zoey swore she had seen before… There was one that depicted the decapitated head of Medusa that she vaguely remembered seeing in a museum before, and another one of what looked to be a young girl dressed in the garb of a noble, and yet… Her face was unusually hairy, upon first glance it would certainly be easy to mistake her for a werewolf. Of course, Zoey remembered learning much later that the girl in the painting had been born with some sort of rare condition, she couldn’t recall the exact specifics but she did know that the disorder caused unusual excess hair growth in those afflicted with it…
”What a strange looking girl…”Eir suddenly piped up from next to her, the Ninetales peering up curiously at the painting with her head cocked to one side. Torgeir simply hummed in agreement, before turning to follow after Ingrid, who was far more interested in just continuing on ahead rather than looking at strange pieces of art. Right, they should probably get going, Zoey gently tapped Eir on the shoulder and gestured down the hall, the Ninetales nodding as they walked onwards a bit more briskly to catch up with the Blaziken and Meleeon. So far nothing unusual had happened… no flickering lights, no paintings detaching from the wall and flying at them, no objects moving on their own… Still, Eir knew better than to let her guard down, the element of surprise and tension buildup was how they got you in places like these. Even if the scares here were supposedly more intense compared to the ones they’d encountered on the first floor, the Ninetales was determined to try not to let them get to her so easily.】☆ ☆

☆ ☆【The hall of paintings continued on for quite some time, and yet there were still no telltale signs of anything particular spooky happening. ”Y’know, I was expectin’ a bit more comin’ to this floor, but it seems like a whole lotta nothin’ so far…” Zoey remarked to no one in particular, though she would withhold her judgment on the experience the second floor had to offer once they got to the end of it. There was still palpable tension in the atmosphere, and given how unpredictable the spooky events could be surely they would have something thrown at them sooner or later… Eir, on the other hand, felt a bit more relieved that nothing had really jumped out at them right off the bat, though she couldn’t let her guard slip just yet. There was still plenty to explore here, after all, which meant plenty more opportunities for scares to happen. The hall suddenly took a sharp right turn as they finally approached the next area, which held a multitude of different rooms, like one of those halls that one would see a rather cheesy chase scene in a scary cartoon with the characters and the antagonist chasing each other all through the multiple rooms until they finally met in the center. ”Let’s see what’s behind door number one!” Zoey declared in a mock game show announcer voice as she opened the first door they came across on their immediate left. Eir nervously peered through the steadily widening crack of it as the door slowly swung open, expecting something to suddenly come barreling out at them from within the dimly lit room.
Still nothing… What lay beyond the door appeared to be another sitting room, though much smaller and with less fanciful décor compared to the one they’d seen downstairs. A thickly cushioned lounge chair surrounded by a couple of red velvet chairs with oaken frames and a small round table made up the centerpiece of the room, alongside other furnishings such as small glass tables adorned with more of those stained-glass lamps like the ones in the living room, a vanity with a dusty mirror, a few ornate vases, and… Zoey paused momentarily as her eyes caught on the sight of the mannequin set off to one corner of the room, close to another door that for sure led into a small closet. It had the shape of a woman’s body, clad in a frilly cream colored long dress, and topped with a head that looked like it would be more fitting on a porcelain doll with the powdered pink cheeks, painted red lips, and too large brown eyes framed by long plastic lashes. It definitely seemed that it been separately made to be placed on the mannequin than as part of the original mannequin itself, no doubt the headless mannequin had been given one that the owner thought would be fitting for it. And god damn did it just look weird and off-kilter... ”Yeah no, don’t think we’re gonna be doin’ that today,” the woman said with a shake of her head, moving to pick up the mannequin and bringing it over to the closet. Flinging the door open, Zoey wasted no time stuffing the mannequin inside until the face and upper body was mostly obscured by the small collection of coats and dresses that were still inside the small space before slamming it shut. No way was she going to have that… ‘thing’ staring at her the entire time while they poked around in here. As tempting as it was to just flat out toss the thing out the window, she'd rather not have to deal with potentially being charged with 'property damage' since it was still a prop for the haunted house itself. So, the closet would hopefully work just as well in lieu of that. ”There, outta sight, outta mind… Hm?” her triumphant remark trailed off for a moment as she noticed something glinting on the floor nearby, apparently it had fallen out of the mannequin while she had been moving it. Upon closer inspection, Zoey’s eyes lit up in delight to see it was a Heart Scale. Well, certainly nothing wrong with having more of these in her slowly growing collection, she’d definitely have to use them up at some point but that could wait until they got back to Alola. She scooped the little scale up from the floor, quickly tucking it away into her bag for later.】☆ ☆

She saw it, but paused before saying anything, sure that Jay would somehow already know. A moment later, Koda led Jay to the door. "It's over there.." she mumbled, feeling silly.
...At least Hakuren had contributed to solving the puzzle, she thought to herself as Jay finished off the 'key' and opened the door. Alright, I'll just help out more for the next room, she decided, before stepping up and looking through the doorway. You have got to be kidding me." She resisted the urge to slap a hand to her face.
"Um. I'm not sure, it's dark..." she trailed off, glancing at Jay's eyes. "The objects are some glowing pumpkins." She thanked him for holding the door, noticing for the first time that he wasn't that much taller than she was. "Something tells me we're supposed to stick our hands in them." She walked up to one and looked in, but the darkened insides were as much a mystery as they'd be to Jay. Maybe even more so, if he was able to somehow tell something with that tongue-clicking of his.

Walking into the haunted house, Scarlett took a good look at her surroundings to make sure no one was standing by to jump out at her. Aside from her little find though, Scarlett felt like there wasn't much happening in the haunted house. She didn't know what to expect going in, but she certainly had expected more than just a spooky atmosphere. There were cobweb decorations hanging on the walls and ceiling with spinarak crawling along them, paying her no mind. The red eyes of some ghost pokemon stared out at her from dark corners but otherwise nothing had really happened yet. It was suspicious, to say the least. Or perhaps it was foreshadowing events to come, because little did Scarlett know that she was being followed still.

After walking a little further into the house, Scarlett spotted another stray ticket caught in some of the spinarak webs. "Either someone's got a loose pocket or it's my lucky day~" She hummed, carefully plucking the ticket out of the webbing and cleaning it off before adding the ticket to her collection. There was also the possibility that the tickets were rewards left behind, or maybe they were intentionally hidden throughout the house with the intention of being found by those with a discerning eye (like her). Scarlett suddenly took notice of another person's presence in the room with her, so she quickly and quietly moved on then paused to listen to their footfalls. They were too casual sounding to be a worker, so they had to be a participant like her. Well, she supposed given how uneventful her tour had been, Scarlett supposed she wouldn't mind some company—except the consideration vanished when her pursuer rounded the corner. It was the same man who'd been tailing her before! She thought she'd gotten rid of him.
She could have passed off their meeting here as mere coincidence yet again, except that he was looking at her with such a smug and expectant look that it gave him away. He certainly wasn't trying to be subtle. A scowl crossed her face as she sized him up. Despite his handsome features she was rather annoyed with his behavior. "Do you mind?" She asked bluntly. "I don't see what's so funny about following me around like some kind of stalker. I know it's Halloween and all but really. Go find someone else to haunt." She huffed. Normally she wasn't this irritable about getting an admirer and a good looking one at that, but something about his behavior felt familiar and irksome. She couldn't really put her finger on it.

He gripped his tender nose and wheezed. "Yep. That's broken. " The attacked picked him up by his cape's collar and raised his fist again. "Woah Woah woah what's your damage? " Kenjiro said shifting his weight back to get in position to sweep the guys leg. "Did you give my little girl ice cream?!" Kenjiro raised his brow. "I gave a lot of kids ice cream I do-" Before he could finish responding the man's fist came barreling into his face. His left eye closed in pain. "Look I'm sorry if I spoiled her appetite for dinner, but isn't this just a tad bit extreme?" Kenjiro's accompanying otter ran around in a panic, he turned to attack, but a sharp looked from his trainer stopped him in his tracks.
"Dinner, that's not what this is-! Taking advantage of the man's momentary respite Kenjiro pulled the draw string of his cape dropping him to the ground and out of his attacker's grasp."What the ********> Before the attacker could react Kenjiro kicked his leg knocking him to the ground as well. Kenjiro quickly jumped on the man, putting all his weight on the man's arms. "Sorry about what I'm about to do, but-" Kenjiro and the man stopped struggle for a moment in reaction to a child's sudden wailing. "Waaah stop fighting! Why'd you hurt Mr. Vampire?"
"Hey now sweetheart, I'm not hurt. This is just makeup." Kenjiro wiped the blood that was pouring out of his nose. "I just used a little too much. You're dad here and I are just playing." Before the man could speak, Kenjiro dragged his cape over his face. "Why you tell Mr. Vampire what's gotten your dad so... rowdy"? The child tried to speak through sobs. "I saw aw aw. Mr. Booonejangles.. and and I gave hihim a huuug like you said. And he said you didn't didn't waaaah. Get re.. re.. "Sound it out." The child sobbing was a little less frequent as she tried to speak."Re..cog.. nitin. So Mr. Bonejangles said to tell my dad you touched me... In da heart. " Releasing his pin, he pat the girl in the snorunt costume on the head. "Thank you sweetheart. You remind me of my daughter."
Kenjiro rolled off of the man, and got up. Removing the cape that the man had become entangled in, he offered a man a hand up. "Look Mister I... " Kenjiro held up a hand to silence the man who was still shaking. "I bet you feel really..." He glanced at the snotting snorunt girl. "Silly... right about now. I'm not interested in children like that. I bought a group of polite children ice cream because of how polite they were when I was teaching them how not to get ripped off by some of the rigged games." Kenjiro continued to wipe some blood onto his sleeve. "Woah, that's still coming out." He cleared his throat.
"Look I..." Kenjiro raised his hand again. "As a father to a daughter myself, I do not think how you acted was in error." Kenjiro's face became rigid and angry. " If you want my forgiveness you'll do two things for me. The first and most important. Don't you dare leave your child alone in a place like this, what if something had actually happened?!" Glancing back over the the little girl, still sobbing his face and words softened. "Second, you could spread the word about a skeleton telling children to tell their parents that I touched them..."
Kenjiro crouched over to the little girl. "Listen sweetheart, you're daddy loves you very much. Also Mr. Vampire was wrong about Mr. Bonejangles. Mr. Bonejangles is a very very bad skeleton and you shouldn't listen to what he says. Also he's very mean so just stay away from him and stay with your dad, alright?" Kenjiro returned to look at the father. "This skeleton character is a violent individual, and I wouldn't recommend dealing with him. It's probably best to avoid him."
Kenjiro picked up the otter and began to leave. "Bye mister vampire!" Kenjiro turned back to look the man dead in the eyes. "Remember what I said." Kenjiro waved and began to walk away muttering about how he needs a third costume.

Thankfully, no such thing happened, though Zoey’s eyes maintained that squinted glare at the closet as she slowly closed the door to the boudoir behind her. ”Screw you, goddammit…” she muttered under her breath as she finally sealed it shut, breathing a soft sigh of relief. Hopefully that would be the first and last time she’d see that stupid thing, although with this being a haunted house it could just as well come back to spook her later on. She ******** hoped not… They were quite a ways in on the second floor and still nothing had happened, Zoey felt somewhat relieved that they were getting a bit of a breather, but the tedium of just wandering around with nothing really notable happening was starting to really get to her.
