ma cherie d amour Not a hard instrument? please. Don't try to make a point without researching it first, sweetie. You end up looking stupid. Drums, and percussion, is more than just tempo. And the reason we're so cocky is because we have to put up with so many judgemental idiots. dam straight

To play percussion you must be confident. Anyone can tell the difference between a confident drummer and a non-confident drummer. Trust me when I say this, we are confident so we can play well.
Now, confidence can be confused for cockiness, but if you truly want cockiness, I'd say go to the trumpets. They always seem to know exactly everything perfectly.
At my school though, because our band director was a tenor player in high school, and a mallet player in WGI, he understands we become haughty. He makes sure though to randomly play some insane solo or lick to put us all back in our places if needed.

Everyone goes for the trumpet player's egos... Let me tell you something though. It's not technically ego if it's true.

Drumming is a passion. Some people are boss at some things and are "good" at other things. To be a drummer, you can't be just good, cuz thats not enuf for us, even if we play another instrument. . . BOSS is more like it!! So the next time you see a cocky snare guy/girl with their drumsticks wiggling in your face on a snare er something. . . just understand that they take drumming seriously- just as you do with your instrument! biggrin

We don't have to worry about the drummers being cocky. We worry about our 2nd trombone, Loosemore, being cocky. The only thing about the drummers that we worry about is being to loud or speeding the tempo up or not listening to the rest of the band.
And you're right. The drums are easy. I don't know why most of them would even want to be cocky. It's like saying you know how to play one song on the guitar and it ends up being Smoke on the Water. Not that impressive.

One of my best friends is a drummer. The only piece of advice I would give you, my friends,-and this can go for playing and speaking- BE QUIETER. You're not only section in the band. You don't understand that you're not alone. You never stop when you should.

Try playing the mallet part for Second Storm. We have to play eighth notes for like 30 measures straight. We make one little screw-up, and we're humiliated in front of the WHOLE BAND. Not a good thing...

blackrider11 drummers cocky... Have you SEEN THE TRUMPETS???!!?!? He's right. Trumpets have the biggest egos of them all, even when they're, like, 25th chair. But drums is hard. I'm a percussionist, but I'm also a bagpiper and digeridooist, and drums are the hardest. Rolling is especially hard considering that it isnt (supposed to be) double bouncing, its actually hitting one stick twice then twice with the other really really fast. When it comes to mallets, it is extremely hard because you need to look at the conductor/music/instrument so you don't miss, and even if you've memorized the part, there is still a great chance that you're going to mess up. Plus, have you seen nonpercussionists trying to play with our "toys?" They end up damaging it trying to figure out how to play it, so nonpercussionists are no longer aloud to play with them. Besides, from my observation, percussionists are lazy, not cocky, at least where I'm at.

In our band, the drummers are really good, but none of them brag about it. All of the sections are pretty cool and theres a lot of blending going on, pretty much everyone gets along with everyone else smile
I love how all these stereotypes and mean things are shooting around. marvelous.
