:: A Brother's Gift is Time :: An MSN Roleplay with Aphismet It didn't take much thinking to figure out where Eiry would be. Rivener floated through the house in the minty Sigel's usual haunts, and eventually located him. Riv grinned. "Hey, whatcha doin'?"Eiry looked up from his cardboard box, quite comfortably curled up inside and looking sadly at a ripped up book. He shrugged his shoulders and looked back at the devastated spine, "Struggling to remember what pages were once here." He didn't look all too excited to see Rivener. Riv half-pouted. His minty brother had been competely deflated ever since the infection, and now with Zul moving in as well... But Rivener was sure he could cheer up the other! With a sly tilt of his head Rivener peered into the box, smirking. "Well, I know what pages were once there." With a grand wave and a snap of his wings, Rivener pulled his hands out from behind himself, brandishing a wrapped box. "Merry Christmas! It's a little late, but I ordered it off the web and it took a while to get here." Eiry glanced at the box halfheartedly, then looking back up at his brother, he gave a smile. "Thanks, but my feelings say to me that I don't deserve the gift, Riv. Whyever did you purchase it?" Rivener blinked, completely taken aback by the bland reaction. A slow frown etched itself onto the Scorpion's face and Riv pushed the present closer, all but forcing Eiry to accept it. "Your feelings are WRONG. You're my brother and you deserve this gift from me! What you did was no worse than what I did to Isi that time... And you said you still liked me even after that, so I still like you after this! Now stop being difficult and open your present!"Shifting in the box to accomodate the push of his brother, Eiry put down the torn up spine of his book outside of the box. He connected his gzae with Rivener, feeling rather like a prisoner who was being fed morsels of food through a small slit through the bars. He took the gift, and contemplated how to open it, whether he would just reach inside, or open it to please his brother. Deciding on the latter, Eiry took his fingers and peeled away the packaging. When he finally opened the box, he paused for a moment staring at the darkness within the box. Riv waited and watched, frowning still at the way Eiry looked. Not happy and pleased to be getting a gift, but contrite and dejected. Rivener felt GUILTY for giving him the gift, like he'd forced it onto him... Ugh, this wasn't how it was supposed to go at all! But maybe once the box was open, things would change? The Scorpion leaned closer, wings spreading slightly for balance, as he watched Eiry's face for any kind of reaction.Eiry stared for some time at the contents of the box, looking at the four corners with his hands gripped on either side of the box. It seemed like forever when he finally made a motion, which was a heavy drawn breath. Slowly, he reached inside and pulled out the gift within... Three classic-style Poe books, with gold inscribings and hard covers. Eiry couldn't look away. He felt himself tense up and his body, which was already naturally tinged with the cold of death, grow even colder. He pulled the books onto his stomach and pushed the box away. Slowly, he picked up one and pressed it to his face, taking in the sweet stale smell of paper and ink. It was in the release of that breath, that Eiry began to shake. He looked up at Rivener, his eyes a flurry of emotions, of "why" and, strangely, hurt, but the longer he watched Rivener, the more his red eyes welled up with overwhelmed gratitude. He began to breath faster, heavier breaths, and he looked back at the Poe book, a smile tugging at the edges of his mouth. Eiry lifted the book to his face, and pressed his face to the open pages, smelling the freshly printed pages.Rivener flinched back at that initial look of confusion and agony. H-had Riv guessed wrong? Would Eiry not want those books after all? The older Sigel's ruby eyes flashed with concern, but kept watching, waiting for the final verdict. Eiry's face slowly changed, and then finally the verdict was given without need for words: Eiry NUZZLED the book he'd opened, and Rivener laughed. "So you like them? I'm so glad!"Eiry managed to pry his face away from the book, his breath hitching in his throat as he fought to keep his composure together. He made the motion with his mouth to say something, but no words came out. So instead, he nodded excitedly. He looked back to the book and stroked it. "Brother mine," Eiry finally managed to croak, moving a hand though his minty locks and exposing the pale skin of his forehead, "I...Despite my previous efforts of expressing distaste and disastifcation, of hurt and anger towards you, you and the other occupents of the house, your Lenore...You still would do this?"Riv chuckled, bending down and ruffling his brother's hair. That speechless nod of agreement for the gift had been wonderful, and Rivener now felt even floatier than usual. "Of course I'd still do this. You're my brat brother, and you're just acting like a brat brother, it's to be expected. I still love you anyway. And we're still having Brothers-Night every week! Just you and me, no Lenores allowed."Eiry wiped at his eyes with his wrist, trying to push back the tears that threatened to spill out. He pressed the book tightly to his chest, hugging it tight. For a few moments, he wrestled himself back into composure and then slowly floated out of the box to lean himself, books and all, against Rivener. "Promise me, that your words are true. I am becoming so lonely. Even with books to keep me company, I've become so very lonely."Rivener straightened and wrapped his arms around the minty Sigel, having expected the hug. Riv smiled, nodding against the pale hair. "I Swear on my Rune, Eiry. We'll still have time together, and as long as you're nice about asking, you can ask me to spend time with you whenever you want. Just be sure to share with Zul, okay?" Riv smiled happily, glad with how things were turning out. A few flaps of his leathery wings displayed Riv's good mood, and he suddenly pulled away a bit to level his brother a teasing grin. "Perhaps you should go out and find a Lenore of your own!"When Rivener flapped away, Eiry rubbed again at his eyes furiously, trying to keep his face dry lest he wet his new books. He looked at him, brows furrowing and mouth helplessly pulling into a smile. "...I am selfish to want you all the waking hours," he said, trying to keep his books in his arms from falling. Then he stiffened and looked at him with widen eyes, before shaking his head incredulously and looking away, almost bashful, "There is no Lenore for Eiry. Lenore is lost and I, like in the Raven, shall seek them nevermore. See it says right here..." Eiry opened up one of the books to a certain page, easily finding the poem, and he shoved the book into Rivener's hands. "See? Lenore's gone for me."Rivener chuckled at Eiry's bashful reaction, although he couldn't quite figure what Eiry meant by his Lenore being gone. The only one gone was Gage. H-had Eiry harbored feelings for Gage? The sudden appearance of a book in Riv's field of vision distracted the Scorpion thoroughly and he discarded that idea. Red eyes found the passage easily, though Riv only sighed. "Eiry, you know you're not the one in the book, right? This is about someone else. There might still be a Lenore for you out there...""There is no Lenore out there for me," Eiry said, his voice falling with each word. He folded the book closed and pressed it back to his chest, "You couldn't find a Lenore that was meant for Eiry."Rivener's face fell along with his Brother's words, and he hurried to rush forward and try to make it better, putting a hand on the other's back and rubbing. "Ah well, we'll see. For now, you don't need one: I'm still here! I'll be sure to spend lots of time with you, okay?" Rivener smiled encouragingly, hoping to lift Eiry's spirits again."Thou needst to spend time with your own Lenore," Eiry said, looking back up to Rivener and pushing a smile onto his face, "So you do not end up like myself, lonely with books as company. Rivener has his own Lenore to hold close and keep warm now, thou hast your own Zul to smile with and make things for, to pick flowers for and bring blankets to when cold. You have responsibilities now, Rivener, to your Lenore. I would rather you keep yours than tend to silly me. I'll find books enough to keep me warm."Rivener scoffed, although he grinned at Eiry's sudden understanding. The minty one didn't use to so openly suggest Riv go spend time with Zul. "Pshaw, Zul's a guy, he's not a delicate Lenore. He can handle a few hours without me, and you're important to me too, just like he is. Only in different ways. So no buts! I'm going to be your big Bro forever, Lenore or no." Riv preened.Eiry gave him a look of firm disbelief and of frank amusement. He shook his head, giving a bit of a tired smile, and pushed Rivener gently away, "Go. You have your Lenore and I have my books. I would keep you longer, read to you, sonnets of Shakespeare, but I know, full well, that you wouldn't understand. I don't even have them anymore. Shakespeare is a ghost now, broken spines and tattered skin. Go. Zul probably needs you." And with that, Eiry floated away to the dusty window sill of the attic. He settled himself in its frame, intangible so that he was half in and half out, and he opened the book he held in his arms, settling the other two beneath him. Eiry was right, in a weird distorted way. He had his books. And for now, that was enough for him.

Valentino
-----------------------------------
Eiry had already succumbed himself to the belief that there would never, in all his second life, be a match for him.
Moping throughout the house as silent as a wind rustled curtain, Eiry kept mostly to himself the week of Valentine's day. He turned his back when he entered a room already occupied with a family member, and pushed himself into the wall when he heard voices coming his direction. He even neglected to set traps or pranks around the household, desiring no attention from the members of the house hold. Playing scarce was his game. For the wispy sigel, that week, it became more than just a game, but rather a way to defend himself. Which was strange, considering that there wasn't really anything for him to defend himself from.
In all honesty, Eiry just didn't want to see the two couples of the household necking one another, smiling, or lending one another the briefest of touches.
It embittered him, in a way, teased him and reminded him of his new state of loneliness. There was no one to call his own, not like Rivener and Zul or Aphi and Alex...And Isi was employing the same kind of tactics as he, so Eiry was more alone than ever. The pets he tended to in the tree house outside the Delaran abode provided little conversation (besides Beauregard who provided more conversation than Eiry was willing). The sigel didn't do much to better his situation either. Instead, he feigned away from social ventures and shied away from casual talk, choosing instead to lock himself in his books and plays.
Many hours did Eiry spend in the hallowed hall of his attic bedroom, tucked into his bed with a book cradled between his forearms. It was thanks to the books that he kept his sanity, regardless of how many times he had already read through his miniature collection. There were people inside, relationships that he felt comfortable looking upon, and in his lonely hours he would silently pine for a Shakespearean love for his own. He yearned for someone to keep him in good company, someone to seek him out and enjoy time with him, someone that he could woo and coddle and impress.
But at the same time, he was dead terrified of actually implementing the moves documented in the many romantic comedies of Shakespeare, absolutely stone cold fearful.
It was on one of these many occasions of losing himself in his pages, that Isi clambered into the attic and distracted Eiry away from his fictional friends and fellows.
"Eiry," he said, looking a bit exhausted from climbing the stairs, "I've got some news for you. Thanks to Ethan Blake, you remember him, and Vyn, we've been invited to go see Shakespeare's The Tempest."
Eiry nearly choked on his own tongue.
"I fear I may have heard you false," Eiry blathered, dropping his current book into the tangle of his ribbon, "The good Bard?"
"The same. And you better enjoy it," the teen snapped, "I don't like accepting such big gifts, but he's already paid for the tickets. They're box seats! So you better thank your lucky stars that he thought of you, even after your rude behavior at his dinner party, and find something nice to wear."
And it was then that Eiry's sullenness evaporated, immediately overcome with inexplicable glee.

Encounter
-----------------------------------
The front door slammed. That was the noise Eiry was waiting for. Leaping from his post in the attic, the fire-winged sigel raced through the walls of the house for the first flight of stairs. He carefully dodged Rivener's room, and skidded into place at the first step, his chest beating hard with breath. With his brows furrowed with worry, he slammed his arms into the walls, effectively blocking the way for the frei that now ascended the stairs. "Zul!" he demanded, his voice cracking with worry, "What happened to my brother?!"
Earlier that day, he had heard a commotion in the house after Aphi drove up. Slinking from his bedroom in the attic, he managed to catch a glimpse of a beaten and ragged, newly bandaged Rivener, whisk his way into his room. "What happened?"
It had been a quick night that had started his long day, and while Zul was happy to be home, he was not in the least bit interested in recounting all that had happened...least of all to the Sigel that was suddenly in his path. Crystalline eyes turned upwards, the usual gentle mirth absent from his features as he stared at Eiry, letting his gaze say plainly that he was not willing to do this. Not that he thought it would change anything - and it didn't, unsurprisingly - and with a slow drawn breath, he gave Eiry a terse reply. "Rivener was almost killed," he said flatly, eyes narrowing. There. An answer. He wasn't asked to elaborate, and damned if he'd offer more information than necessary to the minty nuisance.
The information struck Eiry like a brick to the face. Hit palpably with the blunt answer, Eiry loosened his arms from his self-made barricade and steeled his gaze at Zul. It was easy to see in the florescent light of the hallway that the minty sigel's eyes glazed with moisture. "Divulge the tale to me, what and who would do this evil to my brother mine? Who! Speak with me, Zul, I must know!" He floated forward, closing the distance between them just a bit more.
The manner of speech rankled Zul, wholly because he didn't understand it and felt as though he should. The wetness in the Sigel's eyes did nothing to soothe his annoyance, and if anything, ignited his anger. "The one who did it is dead," he answered in the same flat tone of voice, the heat of his body rising with his agitation, "by my hand." The demon wasn't going to let the moment pass, to let Eiry think for one second that Zul had been absent such as the Sigel had been. "But where were you, Airy? If he's so precious to you, why do you hide with books and yourself?" Bone-framed wings spread and flexed, the sharp tips scraping the walls. "If you care, go to him! I care, and I'm going to see him. That's what you do when you really care."
Hit again by Zul's words as if they were hurled javelins, Eiry did his best to bare his teeth through the accusations. His own cheeks flushed with ghostly heat, reddening his face with embarrassment, frustration and anger. In response to Zul's erect wings, the sigel lifted his own, letting the ethereal flame give a sputter of sparks. He would not let the other frei intimidate him so easily...Even if his words were completely and entirely true.
"I was...No little sound did I hear, no testimony to his trouble! No echo foretelling his danger rattled within my walls. I heard nothing, Zul, save his battered return." he blathered helplessly. Every excuse he gave didn't make him feel better about being absent when his brother needed him. Every excuse he made didn't present his case in any better light either. He knew he was just making a royal fool out of himself. His truth was weak against Zul's truth. Eiry, furrowing his brows low, glanced every so slightly over his shoulder towards Rivener's room, "Do I ever, he's my brother, I do...I do...But I still fear doing him harm when he wants me not."
Zul listened, if only because there was nothing else to do until the Sigel moved out of his path. A nasty, ugly part of him whispered that it should have been Eiry to be out there, alone, to be attacked. That maybe - just maybe - the minty Raevan would understand what Rivener had been enduring since Christmas. The demon was selfish, but he was not a fool. He didn't feel even an inkling of regret for his dark and angry thoughts, the likes of which pulled an ugly smile from his lips. "And what would you have done," he replied under his breath, a rhetorical remark. Even if Eiry had come to help, what could he have done? Serenade Brian Sparks with shared madness? Shaking his head, the heat rolling off his skin causing his hair to shift of its own accord, he tried to sort out the speech pattern of the Sigel and formulate some response that was both intelligent and not in the least bit consoling. "You in your attic, says you don't want anyone." The statement was simple, absent of the lackluster tone from before. "Is that true? Would you turn Rivener away if he went to you?" Aquamarine eyes remained leveled on his elder, not an ounce of respect in his posture. "He wont want us to see him like this, but he needs us." As much as it pained him to say 'us,' he meant it. The Scorpion needed love and reassurance, whether he admitted it or not, and not only from the demon. Rivener was too family-orientated to be satisfied to be left alone.
That was something that Eiry didn't consider before. Whenever they were in trouble, Rivener was always the one to get them out. He was strong, he was belligerent and able to succeed in fights and brawls. Rivener knew how to protect and knew how to throw a punch. Eiry, on the other hand, did not. He was a trickster by nature, and his prowess in battle was embarrassingly short in terms of muscle. The sigel replied on magic, cunning, and tricks, the first of which being his only weapon and the tactic that depleted most of his energy. What use would he be in Rivener's defense?
"None do I entertain for none are willing to have me, too enthralled in the exchange of one another's eyes everyone is," Eiry bleated helplessly. A bit of stress levied itself from his chest then. He had been wanting to say that for a long while. "If he sought me, I would not deny his company. But it is not my wish to distract him from time better spent with his Lenore," which was, again, the truth on his part. He had already had this discussion with Rivener, laid out promises for time they would spend with one another, but such promises were easily forgotten.
Eiry kept himself distant from the house out of respect for boundaries and time, as well as his own bitterness. Watching other's relationships bloom did little to comfort him, and he refused to torment himself with it if he had a choice in the matter. Still...He knew that all that reasoning had nothing in the matters at hand now. Rivener needed them, that's what Zul said. So, lowering his wings, a sign of submission, the Sigel backed himself into the wall, allowing Zul passage through the stairwell. "...But he needs us. There is truth in your words and I...I will follow."
There were many things the Frei could have said. He could have told Eiry that his time with Rivener had been nearly non-existant, between the Scorpion's work and his own. He could have mentioned that he, his woman and Lucia would be leaving the house for a time, affording the spurned brothers time with one another. However, he was in no mood to entertain Eiry's feelings in the matter or give him any type of hope, feeling his own neglect keenly and finding no comfort in knowing Eiry suffered as well. Zul watched the Sigel show a smidgen of vulnerability, open up a little, even, and he did not care. His opinion of the minty Raevan would be tarnished for a long time, something he wasn't sure could ever be clean without effort on both their parts, something that would not be happening at that given moment. When Eiry sunk against the side of the wall, Zul simply nodded and tucked his own wings against his back as if he hadn't been irritable at all, floating up the stairwell without touching Eiry in passing. "Good." The demon lead the way up the stairs until at the appropriate level, floating towards the room he shared with Rivener and pausing outside. Casting a brief glance to Eiry to make sure the Sigel would be good to his word, he gave a polite knock on the door. Even if it was his room, it was his Rivener, that which he respected entirely more so. "Rivener," he purred softly against the wooden frame, hand turning the knob, "we've come to see you." Pushing the door open, he looked to Eiry and waited for him to pass through first. It was as kind a gesture as he knew how to impart.

A Foreboding Feeling
-----------------------------------
.Way back home in the car, Eiry feels something terrible about the rain. .
All in a day's work, Eiry thought, happily tucking himself underneath Rivener's arm, regardless of the other sigel's brooding and festering emotions at that point. A habit that never died, he still retreated underneath his brother's arm when it came time to ride about in the car.
