"Drat it all, of all the unfortunate blackened things! Isikoro!"

The distress call from Isi put Eiry into his own good amount of distress. Pacing the lower floor from where he held the phone receiver with tight hands, Eiry glanced around helplessly. Isi was in trouble. From what he heard from the line before it dropped off, was that Isi was stuck somewhere on the back roads between their home and Gambino, his cellphone ran out of battery and his vespa broken down. There was no way for Isi to hobble back home before dark, and Aphi was at work, distracted from his own cellphone by the call of work. Rivener was off somewhere, Eiry didn't know where. This meant only one thing, that Eiry would have to go out himself and find his guardian. He would float there, fly if he had to! There could be no other way! And especially after the onslaught of the disease, perhaps this was a way to redeem himself for mistakes past. Thoughts of heroism swirled in his head, thoughts of reconciliation. He nodded, happy to think of the good deed to come.

So, donning a jacket and throwing a scarf around his neck, Eiry made his way out of the Delaran household, but when he threw open the door and bustled outside, he ran headlong into a plush chest and a mess of black hair. Instinct called for intangibility so Eiry pushed and fell through the form, coming out on the other side and twisting around in wide-eyed wonder.

"Hello?!"

After the failed attempt to visit Rivener, where she bumped into Varun when sick, the frei thought she would never find the Deleran house again. Between being busy and a messy sense of direction, she hadn’t been able to arrange a meeting. But Lucia had finally found some time to visit Rivener and she actually retraced her visits there accurately in a combination of the bus and some flighty guesswork. The kitten had decided to surprise him with her appearance and a small late Christmas present. She floated up to the door and fixed her outfit and hair before lifting up a hand with precisely painted fingernails to knock on the front door.

A startled scream erupted from the dark pink painted lips of the frei as she clenched her eyes and almost dropped the bags in her hands. Whatever she was expecting by coming to Rivener’s house, it wasn’t being almost plowed into and then floated through. Spinning around at the voice, her heart’s pounding slowed slightly as she recognized the green head of hair. ”Eiry!” she said in surprise, not only because of what happened but also because he had grown.

The last time she had seen him, Eirdirsceol had been an ashen and dirty green frei who wouldn’t talk to her and wouldn’t come out of the floor. Now he was different. He was full of color and seemed almost happy. ”I see you’re feeling better than the last time I saw you!” the cat smiled happily. Even Eiry almost taking her out and then basically being inside her couldn’t mess up her mood.

Eiry looked on at the black haired frei before him, blinking as she spun around and batted her long lashes at him in surprise. Recognition poured from her face when she realized just who had passed through her, and Eiry could easily find that he couldn't do the same for her. Who was this raevan? And why did she know him? Know his name, even? The sigel took a moment to pry through the recesses of his memories for her face, desperately searching for a name to the face. Better than the last time she saw him, she said, which meant that...He wasn't well when she came. A light flickered on in Eiry's head, a memory snapping itself into place. His depression. That must've been when she came the first time, so very long ago. It was before he grew!

No wonder he couldn't remember her right off the bat, he was depressed the first time she came and all those days ran together in sickly lumps of shadow and blur.

"My greetings, young one, and my apologies as well! It seems that I wasn't myself when you met me last. For that, I extend my sincerest apologies," he leaned forward, took her hand, and lightly grazed her knuckle with his ghostly lips, his face traced with worry the entire time, "I assure you that my mind is in the right frame now. And, I don't mean to apologize again, but I must, for my guardian is in the gravest of danger and I must rush to his aid with the speed of the wind lest darkness fall and render him helpless!" As he floated back away from her, he bounced slightly with little twitches of his wings, clearly implying his need for haste, his minty bangs brushing in his eyes.

Lucia smiled when the Sigel took a second before he responded. It had been a while since they met – since her first kiss with Rivener. As Eiry spoke to her, the kitten’s eyes lit up. Oh my gosh! When he wasn’t down he was so cute! A slight blush spread across her pale cheeks as he kissed the back of her hand. What a gentleman, but something seemed to be bothering him, she noticed, in the worried lines on his face. Maybe that’s just how he always was – always filled with some negative emotion.

”Wait! He’s in danger?!” Lucia grabbed the other raevan’s wrist. Now she understood the upset expression. ”Where is he? What happened?” The kitten was so used to helping souls and spirits that it was almost second nature to help Rivener’s brother. But she needed more information if she was to even understand what was wrong. Rivener could wait, she rationalized.

Eiry furrowed his brows, watching as his panic was immediately absorbed and transferred into Lucia. She was quick to worry, he found out, quick to get herself involved in danger she didn't even know about. He waved his hands helplessly, as if waving her down, his messy flighty bangs flying again into his face. As he strove for words to speak, he pushed at them, striving to keep his bangs out of his eyes.

"Isi, my guardian he is, he rides from the Lab, to and fro, quickly he does, on his small automobile. One person usually, though he makes me ride sometimes on the back. Prithee, hark closely," Eiry knew that he was talking much too quickly then for her to really understand. So he took a few breaths, swallowed, and started again, trying to keep himself from speaking so quickly. "Isi was out when his automobile, dread the happening, broke down! He's in the middle of no where, he is, lost and alone. Cellphone dead! And he's weak of legs, you see, weak of leg! Get back alone, he cannot. It's up to me, woeful sprite that I am, hands still red with mistakes past, who might save him. Perhaps, in this way, I can right my wrongs."

He looked around him and ran his hands through his hair, forcing it back out of his eyes again. "But I don't know...I don't how to get to him in time, before the great orb in the sky falls and leaves Isi trapped in the dark!"

Lucia looked at Eiry as he spoke. Her neck slowly bent forward as her eyes went wide as he spoke so quickly. She was obviously confused. Whaat? Isi, guardian, Lab, and something about one person was all that she got from it. Eiry’s way of communicating was cool and sounded almost musical, but even when he was speaking normally Lucia had to translate and reorder his phrasing before she could fully understand. The kitten waited patiently while he seemed to physically calm himself so he could try to get her to understand. It seemed he was familiar with this quirk of his and knew that it would be impossible to understand.

This is better, the kitten thought as she stared at his lips as he spoke much more slowly. Isi – that’s his guardian. His car broke down and cell phone died. Got that. Something about weak legs and – Ohhhhhh! Recognition and understanding was apparent on her face, but it quickly faded to worry. He was stuck alone and couldn’t walk or something!

”If you need to get there quickly why don’t you driv—“ Lucia stopped realizing how silly that was. Even though he was more grown up than her, Eiry didn’t have the legs necessary to control the foot pedals. Lucia bit her lip and tried to figure out a solution. Eiry said he wouldn’t be able to get there in time unless they somehow went really quick. Lucia bit her lip. Maybe it could work.

”Is there another car here? I’ve seen how my guardian drives and the two of us – if we work together – we could maybe get to him on time? You could control where the car goes. And I could do the foot pedals.” Lucia knew how dangerous cars could be – she recently was almost killed by one. But it seemed really important to get to Isi as soon as possible. And if she helped, maybe they could do it.

Eiry listened to Lucia, hearing her begin a sentence that she abruptly cut off. Despite the unfinished sentence, Eiry understood the gist of what she was meaning. The car. They could drive a car to Isi. That would be perfect, Eiry knew, because they would have space enough to drive Isi back home. As for his vespa, Eiry didn't know what to do about the vespa...Well, perhaps he could bring something like gas, or a cellphone for Isi to use. He was sure that Isi knew a lot more about how to deal with his broken down vespa than the technophobic Sigel. It seemed like the perfect plan!

"Brilliant, my feline fellow!"

...Except for one blindingly troublesome fact.

Eiry's phobia of cars.

Usually, the only way to get Eiry into the car was to prep him for the ride for about ten minutes, and that's only if Rivener was coming along. A car ride without Rivener, for Eiry, was out of the question. He NEEDED Rivener, Eiry was convinced.

But this was about Isi. And Rivener wasn't around. If Eiry were to wait, it would be nigh on impossible to find him in the dark in the middle of the countryside. They could do it. It was just crazy enough to work.

At length, Eiry nodded, tightening his mouth into a frown. "This is for Isi. Aside I must lay my own fears for the sake of my guardian." as he said that, his voice gave a bit of a quiver. But he gave a nod and floated back into the house, gesturing for the kitten to follow, "This way. The keys to the spare car are in here."

Lucia didn’t understand the pause, not being familiar with Eiry’s almost debilitating fear of cars. But she knew what “brilliant” meant. And now she would actually have to try to drive, to play the feet, and put a raevan, whom she met once and who didn’t instill the most security in her at the time, in charge of their destination.

But he was Rivener’s brother. And she would help. Eiry seemed nervous too, even going into a little speech about helping Isi and his fears. Shrugging it aside, Lucia followed him and floated into the house right behind him. ”Okay” she said as she grabbed the keys when he pointed them out. ”Are you ready?” she asked with a smile on her face. Even if this was dangerous and pretty scary, she could make sure it was fun too. All she had to do was push on the right button and it would go or stop.

”Lead the way to the car!” she said with a smile. She didn’t know if Eiry knew how to start a car, but she had kind of seen how Yuurei did it. She never paid much attention, but she knew which hole and everything.

Hopefully, she thought, this would be easier than she expected.

Eiry gave a weak wobbling grin at Lucia as she snatched up the keys with her intimidatingly long fingernails. It wasn't so much her nails that made him wibble with indecision as it was the fact that she was picking up the car keys. To be absolutely and completely honest, Eiry didn't know half as much as he should about the routines of setting up and driving the car. He always had his head tucked underneath Rivener's arm, pressed into the nape of his neck, or buried himself in a blanket made of Rivener's wing. As soon as he was in the car, he tried his best to keep his eyes shut and close out the belly of the beast around him. He swallowed a hard lump of saliva and showed the way to the garage door, albeit somewhat halfheartedly.

"Your name is Lucia, correct me if I'm wrong, Lady Black."

The garage was dark and musty, used for little else than to store Isi's vespa and occasionally Aphismet's car when it was raining particularly hard. There were spiderwebs knit in all corners of the garage and old tools that were left there even bfore Isi moved in with Old Maasi. And, against the far wall, covered in dust from neglect, was Old Maasi's station wagon. It was a pale mustard hue, the kind of color that all elderly people seem to decide to have for their cars. After clicking the garage door open, Eiry floated over to the devious vehicle, passing easily through the metal racks and their old and rusted paraphernalia on his way, with the littlest thought of intangibility. Even looking[ at the car made his pale skin ripple with shivers and prickle with cold sweat. He glanced backward at Lucia, half tempted to tell her "No, actually, this is the stupidest idea I've ever had, and let me tell you, I've had a LOT of stupid ideas. Let's go inside, and let Aphismet worry about it when he gets home"...

But Aphismet wasn't going to be home until late. This, of all nights, was a late night for the chef and he wasn't due back until a little before midnight. Eiry gulped and clawed at the collar of his jacket around his neck. Was it hot in here? No, he was sure it was quite cold, and he tested his theory with his heavy breath, which frosted the air before his face.

"Ready I'll be as ever," Eiry stammered, glancing again at the car. He waited for Lucia to unlock it before he weakly muttered, "So, you will work the peddles? I'll work where it steers?"

Lucia slipped the key ring down her pointer finger as she grasped the keys in her hand. Opening her palm, she looked at them. The big key with the black plastic around the top seemed to be the right one. The most elaborate on Yuurei's key chain was for her car. It stood to reason that it would be the same for this car.

Holding it in her hand, Lucia followed Eiry to the garage. "Yeah, I'm Lucia. I'm glad you remembered and that you're feeling better than the last time we met." As the garage door opened slowly, the inside suddenly revealed itself. Lucia, normally immune to skeevy things, was a little worried as she followed Eiry to the car when he suddenly floated through the metal, cobwebs, rust, and whatever else was hidden in the room that would require a tetanus shot.

Glad she was a frei for once, Lucia floated up and around all of the obstacles, able to go over or under whatever rusty object was in her way. Looking at the car she was expected to help drive, Lucia's eyebrows raised. She had never been seen in anything so...gross. Well she promised to help Eiry. So she smiled and slipped the key into the door. Which way to turn it... Twisting her wrist to the left the key wouldn't budge. Wrong way. She twisted it to the left and it clicked open. Pulling the key out, she opened the door and smiled reassuringly.

"Yeah. I'll do the pedals. You control where it goes." The kitten slid into the driver's seat, pushed the key in the hole and turned it to the right again. The engine came to life. It didn't have the same purr as Yuu's car, but it seemed to be working...

The frei crunched herself down to the feet area. Oh geeze. She couldn't see out the window... Crap. Looking at the older raevan she smiled slightly. "You're going to need to tell me when to push the one to make it go and when to push the one to make it stop because I won't be able to see at all.." She experimented. Pushing down on the one on the right the engine revved. She pulled off of it and it went back to idle. Pushing on the one on the left, nothing discernible happened, but that, she reasoned, must be the one to make it stop. "Okay. Let's go." I guess.

Eiry's understanding of cars was already very limited, but when it came to physics and timing and, the biggest issue, teamwork, the ghost sigel was hardly equipped. He was a poor man's entire crayon box short of a full crayon box. That's how bad he was. Of course, this made sense in the long run. Eiry was, sad to say, a loner in more regards and the only person he really had chances to work with and develop a sense of teamwork and a framing for understanding teamwork was his brother, Rivener. One might say "Ah, but he DOES know teamwork", but, in this case, it simply doesn't work that way. In fact, it works against him. Being so attached to Rivener has weakened his ability to seek out new friends, nonetheless work with others. He had become so comfortable, so familiar with his brother, and those of his family, that Eiry found the idea of working with others repulsive if not impossible. It was all faults on his end, of course. Eiry had an amazing talent to take things the wrong way, ALWAYS, all the time.

So, it was with twitching fingers that fiddled at the buttons of his jacket, that Eiry watched Lucia climb into the vehicle, sending him reassuring smiles whenever chance provided. These gestures, however friendly, did nothing to quell Eiry's rising heartbeat, especially when the great automobile choked on its roar to life.

Eiry "jumped" back, flinging his arms above his head and instantly pulling himself into such intangibility that it was hard to even see his outline. Attempting lamely to pull his breathing back into check, Eiry forced himself to become tangible again, his mind flickering images of Isi, crutchless, lying on the roadside before an oncoming truck. This is for Isikoro, must get to Isikoro! his mind screamed at him. So, lowering his arms and moving painfully slow to the open door, Eiry yanked at his collar and glanced again to Lucia, who had folded herself like a magician's assistant into the space for the pedals.

"My apologies," he said lamely, gulping. He crouched his head low, and, taking a deep breath, eased himself into the seat, mindful of keeping his ribbon away from Lucia. Okay. So he wasn't dead yet. Eiry tried to relax, glancing down his front to where Lucia was a seemingly black puddle underneath the steering wheel. "Are you ready?" he asked, looking out towards the road. It was just their luck that the car was already facing the direction they had to go and that Eiry had pushed on the garage door as they entered the garage. Things were all set. Eiry was in the belly of the enemy. And Lucia was in a cramped space underneath them.

"Go...?" the word came out hesitantly. His hands gripped at the cold leather of the steering wheel, making sure it was pointed towards where they wanted to go. "Gently."

Lucia looked up at the sigel, staring as he went intangible and floated through things. Sadly, Lucia didn’t have that ability, and if he was going to drive her into a tree, she would be the one to suffer the damage along with the car. She wouldn’t be able to avoid being crushed by just floating through the car as the metal threatened to crush her ribcage into her lungs. She couldn’t float through the tree as it crushed her. She would be permanently transported to the world of the dead. The frei paled slightly at the thought Eiry floated into the car and closed the door behind him.

Would it be wrong to stop him now? To freak out and tell him that maybe they could find another way. Maybe it wasn’t the best idea to possibly kill her while he had an easy way out? Lucia looked at the pedals in front of her while Eiry got comfortable. He apologized. Maybe he was as nervous as she was? Well…if her guess was correct and the right one pushed it forward, she would stop freaking out.

As he seemed to steel himself and perceptibly relax himself, Lucia nodded at his question. First thing Yuurei always did was move the lever to D. But she didn’t want it to roll forward at the same time. The kitten pushed against the brake with all of her weight, making it difficult for her to see the letters next to the shifter. The frei awkwardly craned her head to the side and pushed it forward, careful not to remove too much weight from the break. Her right hand slowly reached up, pushed the button, and moved the automatic shifter down until the “D” lit up orange.

”Ready,” she replied, cramping herself back into the foot space. She pushed her pigtails out of her eyes and tucked her bangs behind her ears. Placing her right hand next to her left on the break, the kitten waited until Eiry said go before she released the break with both hands.

The car didn’t move. She tentatively pushed on the right pedal very, very lightly. The car inched forward. She felt it move, but could hardly tell it had gone anywhere. It must need a harder push, she thought as she tested the gas and pushed on the pedal hard with the heel of her hand.

The car rolled forward out of the garage and Lucia let out a shriek that filled the car as she released the gas and pounced on the break with both hands. The car jerked on it's wheels at the hard stop as she slammed on the break. Oh my god. Oh my god. She was going to hit a tree! They had flown forward. ”Are we okay?! How close are we to the trees?” she asked before glancing out the side window.

Seeing the house, she stopped panicking. They had rolled forward only a few feet. Okay…they would be fine. She hoped.
PostPosted: Thu Feb 04, 2010 1:53 pm

As the car rolled forward, Eiry's grip on the steering wheel tightened. He immediately tightened himself up between the steering wheel at the seat, trying vainly to wedge himself into place. It was going slow, feeling very much like an orange that was about to roll over the tables edge or something. He couldn't help but bite his lip, watching as the vehicle rolled out of the shadow and into the early evening. So far so good, nothing going wrong...then suddenly there was a burst of sound from underneath him! He pinched himself tight between the wheel and the seat with the lock of the arms and the grit of his teeth. The car gave a suddenly lurch forward as she slammed on the brakes and Eiry was just about sure that every piece in the damned car was going to explode.

"FOBBING FOLLY-FALLEN FUSTILARIAN!" Eiry blurted, stiffening into a statue of fear.

He glanced down at Lucia, his eyes wide with white around the pools of red. She was breathing hard and squeezed herself up near his chest to glance with panic out the window. Furrowing his brows tightly together, he managed to speak, spitting out tufts of black hair that bunched against his face as Lucia moved near, "Woman, we've hardly inched a yard! Whyfore thou screech as loud as any screech owl? T-trust me, I will report to you if we near any great oaks or trees of any kind!"

He could tell right now that getting to Isi was going to be a miracle in and of itself.

Settling himself down with a couple breaths, Eiry tried to quell the shaking in his voice, "Lady Black, prithee, let us try again. You can ease forward, slowly, but a tinge faster than before. Prithee, again. We must get to Isi 'ere the sun rests!"

”I’m sorry! I’m sorry! At least you can see where we’re going!” She wasn’t agitated with Eiry, but she didn’t like being yelled at just for being afraid. The frei wasn’t used to feeling weak, for the most part. And having it point out to her with a yell from her companion wasn’t something she appreciated. She slipped back down into the foot area with a small scowl on her face. At least he said he would say if they were going to his anything.

The frei nodded at the sigel as he tried to tell her to speed up a bit. Lucia looked at the pedals. The break floated up in the air. The gas was already against the ground. She would need to be sure not to his the break accidentally.

Isi – they had to get to Eiry’s guardian. Lucia pushed her hands down onto the gas and felt the car ease forward a bit. She had pushed too lightly before. The kitten pushed harder on the gas pedal. ”Is this good?”

She would hold it down until Eiry said to break. God this seemed like such a bad idea now.
