Broken Hammer Quest - Shades of Grey - Solo (1259 words)

His back was sore. It had been for the past few days… a little achey and more than a little stiff. The scoured skin was healing nicely, at least, but where he bent he was prone to cracking the regenerative film of closing wounds, which set him back some. The previous day been spent mostly sitting in the water recovering from his exhaustion and playing with the tiny shoots that were beginning to grow in the light and the moisture. He’d been too tired to do much more then encourage a few plants to produce anything more than a few leaves… and it had given him a great deal of time to think.

The world they were travelling in was so quiet… no birds sang from the sky, no insects chirped from the dirt, and above all, the feeling of people wasn’t as strong here. It felt empty, and it bothered Forest. A social creature by nature, Glyph thrived on the companionship of others, followed his nature to provide to all lifeforms… and to sit idle with no people to champion, no cult to convert, it weighed heavily on him. Such a dead world very clearly needed to be recolonized and shown the kiss of life but he wondered if such barren isolation had had an impact on the twice failed gem of Forge.

Each of them were echoes of their past selves, lesser in raw power simply because their essences were so scattered, diffused, forgotten. As a god reborn, Glyph had found one of his limits in the desert and it had reminded him that as strong as he was, as divine as he was, he was not impervious to the ways of the world. A gem, so much weaker and vulnerable then he, would likely be ravished by the storms that had wracked the planet and dragged into death. Would she remember her name? Her purpose? Would she even agree to help? How would the memories of her two hosts affect her if she found another vessel to carry her?

If… that was a heavy word, too. There was no guarantee enough of them could be found to reignite their sparks, let alone they find the one destined to fan that flame into life. Finding the gem was only part of the problem… they needed to find a suitable host as well, and it needed to be perfect. Glyph didn’t think she could withstand another failed host and lose what was left of herself. And that task would fall to the Council to find her host. He had experience finding and bestowing gems to hosts, be it Plant or Failure, even Knowledge… but he’d heard little of any of them since giving them to the mortals so he could not boast of finding perfect matches.

It made him wonder, though, what would happen if the gem failed a third time. Would the multiverse lose another child to the ravages of life? He was fairly certain that if he should meet his end as he was now, his domain would lose half its weight and suffer terribly… But the hardiness of gems countered that finality, perhaps? They could fail multiple times and still find their way back into existence, but once struck down from rebirth it was a one-way road, wasn’t it? He wasn’t sure.

If it wasn’t… that meant there was chance to piece together the remains of Universe, wherever he had fallen. Glyph had never met the god but he had seen the impact his loss had had on his peers. Was it even possible? He made a mental note to ask upon their return.

The thought had plagued him in his sleep that night, colouring his dreams with spilled and scattered starstuff caught in agonizing stasis, forgotten and unsearched for. It twisted into broken branches lit by tiny glowing, laughing stars that seemed blind the pain of the woods that wept for a dying god. His own death lingered in the shadows, half-remembered, long buried in the recesses of his mind. They had died once, left to rot in the forgotten corners of time, and only the care of Harmodius had given their shattered selves an opportunity to learn and rise again wiser then before.

It had been a sleepless night for Glyph as he woke before dawn, restless and anxious with images of his own undoing lurking at the back of his mind. Something had caused him to Fade… but that lesson was out of reach, teasing him alongside the buried memory of his final days. Disinterested in taking up that path once more, Glyph had learned from the mortals he’d walked among that the past held lessons to go forward from, not goals to go backwards to. Part of him wanted to learn of his death and the reasons surrounding it… what kind of being was he Before – what could he learn in going forward?

It had been a question that had skittered across his mind now and again. Every creature in all of creation had a story, including the gods, and he was interested in know what theirs had been, if for no other reason to quench his curiosity. He knew, too, that in their fight with the Grigori – whether they were hunted down or showed themselves – they would have to fall back on old power and knowledge, which would require learning from their histories and uncovering old truths. The Grigori were beings of another time and age… they were children of modern times, still learning to walk again. It scared him to think of how unprepared they were as many were still bound by a mortal body or lacked the massive cults that drove their power.

Fortune had smiled on him in that sense… as he had met a race and world all too willing to embrace him once more and it had strengthened him, allowed him to grow so much faster than some of his peers. And he was determined not let that support base wither away because of forgetful, short lived mortals. The Wardens of his woods would not soon forget him as he visited them often and the Night Elves, steeped in their lore and possessed of long lives would also not forget him soon… but it meant too that he had to foster their belief lest their ancient histories draw them back away from their true gods.

It was hard, even now, to imagine a life so short, burning so brilliant, only to be snuffed out in an instant. There was no permanence, no continuity… Even the woods of his domain held cycles, were burned to ask and decimated by disease only to bloom again and stand for centuries upon centuries if not ages…. But the mortals, they reveled in awe of such long-term things, unable to grasp the complexity fully. Glyph knew it… for it was him.

A thought struck him then. They lacked the knowledge and held only the acknowledgement because they did not have a teacher… perhaps that would be his next steps. It seemed so obvious! Awe and reverence of the forests they used would only increase if the mortals understood the truths of its existence, were given a path that spanned generations upon generations rather than a handful of life times. The best of them would be his star pupils, his favourites who would enforce and deepen the teachings he provided.

Glyph smiled as he finally sat up and watched the blush of dawn colour the sky. He had much to do.

Broken Hammer Quest - Final Chapter - Fehlari Ruins
PostPosted: Thu Jun 21, 2012 4:49 pm

Broken Hammer epilogue reserve

Relief was the strongest emotion in Glyph's heart when they finally returned to the Pantheon. Forge had been recovered and no lives had been lost in the process... indeed, he was fairly certain they'd all developed a greater understanding of one another for which he was grateful. Comraderie and alliances would be crucial in the future and having the Spirit Guide and other companions on his side would be most beneficial.

Xun, however... was a source of concern for the kindhearted god. Lifewater's reactions to the search for Forge had been varied but the initial impression upon finding Forge's gem had left a twist of worry in his heart. Xun had failed once, it had to hit home very strongly for him so when Lifewater had wanted some time alone with the gem, Forest had not complained. Perhaps it would help ease the insecurities and mend the wounds his lover carried with him - they'd spoken on the matter a number of times but the guilt and the deepseated rifts created by the lost essence were not things Glyph could truly attend to. Xun had to find the strength to help himself... Forest would be there regardless.

For him, the trip had been an eye opener. The wounds he received in the sandstorm had only served to remind him he was a part of something greater, not above it. Their mortal coils would forever influence them - the perspective a unique crossbreed between divine and mortal. He yearned so much to walk the worlds and spread his influence, to foster Creation's influence and reclaim the broken ways Gehenna had created. Birnam, Fehlar... the two cities and the numerous smaller settlements they'd encountered were ruins, echoes of a grand past yes, but one could not spend their life looking back and lamenting what was lost. With a world as scorched as that had been, there was no other option but to start from the beginning... seeds and buds, grasses and stunted trees which would give way to proud and regal woods from which life could once more spring forth.

Their efforts with the wellsprings and his near constant sewing of seeds would, at least, give the world a head start in becoming hospitable once more. Open, empty spaces bothered Glyph... it always seemed to lifeless, so full of untapped potential. He suspected his brother had a different opinion of the wastes, however.

More then anything, however, it had renewed his drive to build his power. The stronger he was, the better able he would be to provide for the gods and mortals alike when the time came. Forge;s fragile state was a reminder of just how vulnerable they were. With the vast majority of individuals still bound by their mortal hosts or limited by mortal bodies... the Grigori would have devastating impacts on their ranks.... and we worried about the effects of their void corruption on bare stones. Would it warp the god or would it eat away the very essence like a rust? He had no idea and no desire to find out.

She needed a host as well, someone who would carry her into life once more. Forge had a place among them, a purpose ready made, and Glyph sincerely hoped she would be open to the need of her assistance and expertise. It was asking a lot, Glyph knew, but they had little other options. With her assitance, they could craft items of power or instruct the mortals who clustered about the Pantheon... divine mentorship would likely inspire them. If nothing else, the mortals were a cunning, adaptable group... survivors of Gehenna all, and he had no question as to their ability to survive disaster but again the raw nothingness of the Grigori... they had little defense.

There was much to do... so very much to do. Phaedra and Jin would be working on the treasury, Worldshield and Ashoka would be searching the Old Pantheon... he and his comrades had collected Forge. Things were moving, but slowly... so slowly. And Nergal... he'd heard nothing of Underworld. It both worried and frustrated Forest. Why take a position of power and influence if you would only disappear? Nergal was among the few come fully into their power, they would need his assistance and yet how were they to plan or benefit from his knowledge if the Lord of the Dead were not around? Many had stepped forward that day, surely there was a replacement among them.

Glyph sighed, shaking his head as his thoughts rambled and wandered in no particular direction. Home as he was, there was little opportunity for rest. He would take some days to himself, recuperate after long weeks in unforgiving, parched lands and set about the task of getting Forge's gem to the right host. He had to admit, Harmodius' job wasn't so easy!
