this annoying guy in my japanese class last year kept quoting lines from anime all the time, he loved to say dattebayou a lot, and one day I asked him, 'do you actualy know what that means?' and he says 'well, no, but naruto says it.'
*sigh*

one day I managed to get out of him that he was only taking the class because he likes anime. basically he wanted to show off to his other japanophile online friends that he takes japanese classes? talk2hand
but he never studied, his attempts at trying to get through exams without ever studying were really hilarious. im so glad he failed class and I dont have to put up with him anymore.
rofl

what was even more annoying is when we went for the end of year dinner at a japanese restaurant, everyone else ordered easily in japanese, but he basically knew a few nouns and that was it.
and I happened to be sitting across from him, so he kept asking me how to say this and that kanji, how to ask for something, as well as me having to translate everything the poor waiter was saying, who after a while just ignored his pathetic half-assed attempt at speaking japanese and took his orders in english.
plus, he wanted to ask for ramen, at an expensive, fancy sushi restaurant. gonk

oh my gosh, RAMEN rofl !! WUT A DIP rofl !! lol That's ridiculous. That'd be so much fun to go to a resturaunt 'n order something nice in japanese, 'n he totally wasted the experience talk2hand . My gosh, wut a narutard. *pukes*

Well, I think most of the people who posted in this thread isn't much better. stressed You are saying how much of a loser so and so are, but most of the time when people are use to saying something and never corrected for saying it that way and you make fun of them. Okay, I get the thing of making fun of people who want to live in Japan for all and only the anime & manga, because there is more than just that in Japan... and anime stuff is hard to find too. But most people in Japan do read manga... but it's not like you can get a job reading manga...

But what I was going annoyed at with this thread... (I know this is a ranting thread, so don't flame me for this, I'm ranting too razz ) Was the language issue about people not knowing many words and such. But you have to be aware that some people learn different things at different rates. Me, my learning language ability really sucks sweatdrop I've been trying to learn French since I was 5 years old... ok, I was forced to learn it... but still, and 23 years later my French is really bad. But what do I do... try to learn Japanese anyway sweatdrop So my Japanese is poor (Lack of vocabulary) for me to remember a word I have to use it & hear it about 100 times! This is my problem with French too. Yeah, I've been told "It's because you're not trying"... and stuff like that. My point is, if you can learn a language fast, doesn't mean everyone can. If someone is struggling to learn help them, don't make fun of them. (Unless they are like some of the people mentioned on this thread that don't listen to corrections, which means they don't really want to learn.) But I find knowing how to pronounce stuff in French helps me pronounce stuff in Japanese. (Sorry it's a little longer than planned... it's something that has bothered me for a while, it's not really the people in this thread that made me angry, but I did kind of see it here and there, so I was like stressed ...)

What I heard about the "Otaku", if they are an "Anime Otaku" they live, breath Anime. They do nothing else but watch it. No school, no work. Just locked in thier room watching Anime. So I do laugh when ever people concider themselves or a whole anime club as Otaku. sweatdrop

I read someone say listening to Japanese "POP" music & watching Anime doesn't help you learn the language. This is not true, hearing the language does help you learn. You hear how verbs are conjugated, learn new words and so forth. Plus, like I do, I listen to Jrock and I try to translate lyrics to help me learn. Okay, so there are made-up terms in Anime that don't exsit in Japanese like the ever famous "yaoi" [shonen ai] or "Oro" [Used often by Kenshin], but you do learn a lot from these forms of entertainment.

But I do agree that there is a lot more to Japan than just anime and manga.

The one thing that gets me really mad about "those people" (I don't watch much anime, but I listen to a lot of Japanese rock music.) When they say "OMG! You didn't say the band's name right! It's Gazetto not Gazette!" (& vise versa) I'm like Grow up, it's fine to say it either way.
[For people who don't know, the band, their name is "Gazette" That is how the band spells it too (now it's "the GazettE"...but anyway...) and sometime they write it out in Katakana as "Gazetto" because that is how the Japanese pronounce it.] Or I like Gackt and sometime I say Gackto because I feel like it, it doesn't mean I'm wrong, I'm just pronouncing it in Japanese instead of English. Oh, and another thing about those type of people into Japanese Rock music. In my case I really can't stand Dir en Grey (they do have a few good songs, but I genually can't stand Kyo's voice) and I see people write. Dir en Grey is the best, if you don't like them then you suck! or there is no one better than Dir en Grey! If you don't like them then go to hell! Gackt sucks!... stressed

The Anime thing that gets on my nerves is the same thing as what I wrote about Dir en Grey, but put Naruto or Inyu Yasha (sp?) or Full Metal Alchemist or Fruit Basket... Anything pretty much they show on American tv.

About the subbing and dubbing issue. I've watched some of the same animes in English and in Japanese. I do think that the Japanese voice actors are usually better, some they just both suck, some are equall (good or bad)... I have yet to see English better than Japanese (But like I said I haven't watch to many animes).

Wow, I wrote a lot... I sware I never usually write this much! sweatdrop

more rantyness: ok, i just got outta the thread about racism in japan, and this makes me want to rant even more. why is that people who aren't even japanese think that since they like anime every1 in japan is going to think they're the greatest thing since sliced bread? not all japanese people are racist, or else i certaintly wouldn't like japan as much, but i can't stand it when people, ESPECIALLY b/c who aren't even japanese-blood go on about how much better the japanese voice actors in their animes are. i don't watch alotta animes but when i do, i DO watch it in japanese b/c i like to get the original content and improve my nihongo skillz. i don't watch it in japanese b/c ho my gosh, japanese actors are so much better than english actors b/c they're japanese and therefore by default stressed -! N i don't like it when they're all "man, america sucks, japan is so much better" .NO IT'S NOT! japan is kewlbeanz. i LOVE the culture. but america rocks too. don't hate your country just b/c it isn't japan, b/c japan isn't the country that loved you and raised and said you could be anything you wanna be, that wuz AMERICA kid!! america is the home of freedom!! *uber patriotic moment* so please don't talk about how lame my country is just b/c your AMERICAN PS3 can't turn into a stinking gundam and shoot samurai @ the people who make fun of you cuz you're a flippin otaku!!!

mrgreen

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but maybe that person who said that doesn't like America. Some people did bad things and then they're like "F*** You!" you know?

But my guidance counsillor has been all over and she said she was in Japan and it's unlike every other place. It's like a new world! So maybe that's why. Except she said schools are tough on work and discipline.

Now I don't mean to flag down America, but you never know. Japan could be racist (you said maybe) not everyone, no, but because you're America you may not get the best treatment. You can guess why. Many countries do that for Americans. Canada though may be different, we certainly get better treatment. My teachers and us have millions of stories.

Ps: Many countries are free. Nothing special with the states.
i wuzn't saying america is the superior country of the world with my freedom comment, i wuz saying anyone who dislikes the u.s based upon an illogical reason like japonophilia is a botard rolleyes . altho i still don't understand why you WOULD dislike america. people who have done ''bad things" isn't any excuse. you might dislike those people, but disliking the country that they came from makes no sense, unless the entire gov't is corrupt. really..let's think about it...you could just move to another state stare

From a non-American view of Americans & the US (Please don't flame me, I'm just stating my observations as a Canadian)

- It all depends on the government, the worse the government the more the US is hated and bashed (in general). Take Clinton and Bush. We liked Clinton as your President, we thought he did some good things when he was in power and thought it was stupid of the Americans to hate Clinton for doing something 1/2 the population did already, cheat on his wife. Then you have Bush... yeah... no one on this side of the country like him... even though we do have a wannabe-wannabe-Bush as Prime Minister sweatdrop
-I know Americans are sheltered from what is going on in the world, the government sensors the news. So most Americans are in the dark of the "war" they are supporting or not supporting. How often do you see dead soldiers on tv? How often have you heard that the American army bombs Canadian soldiers who where just doing training exercises? I know one of my father's American friends comes to Canada to watch the news.

-About 60% of Americans can't find the US on a world map.

-Education (well at least in Florida) is at a much lower level than Canada.
Example a D student moves to Florida and becomes a B student? eek The sister of that person goes to College and takes and entrance exam and aced it, when no one who has taken the exam aced it before. And they were shocked that she knew stuff that we learn in grade 7 or 8.
-Here in Quebec our passing average is 60% - in other words, on a report card you get a 59% you failed that class.

-Plus when we make fun of Americans we are generalizing, we know not all Americans are dumb

-What I think is stupid is people don't want to have government runned health care plan. So you do loose a little bit of income, but you don't have to worry if you get really hurt or sick... OMG! is my insurace going to pay for this! eek You don't have to worry about it, the government takes care of it. Plus here, some work places have a health care plan, that adds to what we can get from the government. I always wondered why Americans never cared if thier neighbor dies from something that could easilly be tread, but couldn't afford to get help.

-I know Americans say they are a free country, they have the freedom of speech. But I know and I know many people who think this is a false sense that the American people have. For example if anyone who talked bad about the war, they were shunned/black listed.

-Americans and thier beloved guns rofl (My point is why have legallized guns besides Rifles, any other gun is made to kill/harm people...) I know "I have the right to defend myself" speech, but if people weren't alowed to have those types of guns, not so many people would die from gun injuries, plus if they were harder to buy... like not sell them at Kmart and Walmart... sweatdrop

-Oh, and Americans are too noisy about their patriotisms

sweatdrop wow, another long post... a sware I normally write 2-3 lines... sweatdrop Again, please do not flame. I was just writing my thoughts on how Eastern Canadians see Americans.

And once again, I quote on Misake LOL YES!

America... yes it is my country, the country I was born in.. but then again, sometimes you just look at it thoroughly and we're not the greatest people! *pride alert!* LOOK AT SOOOO MANY THINGS WRONG in this country.. and this just makes some people just want to move off of this country. There are many things wrong with it! I don't think it will be repairing itself very soon in the future *or fully heal in less than 500 years D:*.. and also promising the RIGHT rights that people want, or even the speeches that Americans have published in the law documents have long said ago! A free country, .... and such and such... Not really saying that this country will do all of that. A literally free country would be allowing those people who are less fortunate in their other countries who want some rest and a better life could be let in! Just as long as no trouble and paying your debts! As well as a free country.. take it the opposite/different way!

Getting rid of all the criminals! Criminals relates to guns which relate to easy money getting one which relates to stupid weak laws. Why don't we just BAN all of the stupid guns and weapons in America and just have kitchen utensils *kitchen knifes-- hey! at least you're not getting shot down on the street, lying somewhere near a gutter* and scissors! You can poke an eye out but at least you can survive as well! Unless someone starts to stab you with it ^_^; With that exception in a new law, people can only use weapons in the army and police force! Sure sometimes guns are used for sports but.. for hunting?! HUNTING IS WRONG. That is killing animals people, hunting is a sport... even still today! In some areas of the USA, you can hunt. But when certain animal populations go down.. then it's just wrong. We, the Human Race, needs animals to live! It's called, the Food Chain.

and like Misake said... Patriotism.. yes. Pride. One of the seven sins, having too much of it can lead a country to a tragedy in some particular topics like stereotyping and racism. *Refers to that one topic in this guild-- Fairly updated xD* And I'm ashamed of you. people *ranters*! Sometimes it seems like otaku people, even moi, YES MOI and all the other 400,000 anime loving/Japan loving people at a certain website of ours, might be on the annoying side but when we look at ourselves, then we can lower the annoying act down a bit. We have anime pride as anime and manga has helped us in our lives, it's an addiction! *it's better than doing drugs* Alright? Anime helped me out of depression and loneliness and I even got a boyfriend! *make him my fiancee, Holy Lord!* I have like 100 friends now after so many crappy years in elementary school! I have more self-esteem now. That-- is my anti-drug.

Anime can help a person, alright? And yes.. some people, after many years of watching anime and reading manga, can turn a person into a Japan loving person. But! That does not mean, we turn into brainless anime-watching people, some who love Japan/Anime/Manga and want to live there IN JAPAN, want to annoy you! Some people might be on the obsessed side and yet, obsession does not last long people. It can last for some years.. but not so long. Maybe for some people but that is very rare.
And just because some people who like anime and want to study Japanese, for anime and manga, doesn't mean they fail as of by all means. I am taking Japanese classes right now and I'm doing pretty well, I have registered into the classroom late, but I can catch up! I have "mastered" hiragana right now, I'm a beginner and I am trying to catch up on katakana and phrases. Some people learn at slow speeds, some at fast speeds. I am taking French too at the same time!

My regular high school does not have Japanese in its curriculum courses, so I take Japanese on Saturday mornings. To that one person's experience with the "otaku," he wasn't trying at all as it seemed. As for some other people, they are trying. There are anime people too in my own Japanese class, who are little kids, younger than me, like around the age of eight years old to twelve years old *I am fourteen* and they're just as good and willing to learn Japanese. They think it is pretty fun to learn the language and culture.

Manga and anime makes a person look at life from a different view and people want to go to Japan because they love the culture and the differences from their own country. I know many friends of mine who want to go to Japan to explore it and see what it's like there. Not only because of anime/manga as well and they should sometimes also know that it's not there all the time but at least also enjoy the culture that is derived from anime and manga X3 That's what makes Japan so magical! It seems so fascinating and wonderful that we want to go there! It's not like we're going to live there! (Well, I want to work there actually x3) But some people just want to visit. This is all called INSPIRATION.

And... don't call us, THEY! Anime people, are not "they." That's like discriminating a certain group of people. Yes, we are weird, indeed, I say but that does NOT mean that we ARE another group of animal species or something related to that! "We" are more like another group of pop culture, like your goth, regulars, preps, wannabe/gangsters, etc... As well, when anime people start talking to people who know of anime but.. get on your nerves when we go across their nerve cross-line, we just want to make new friends. Alright? Sometimes the average anime-Japan-loving person does not make so many friends when they are not interested in their own cultured society. And when we're annoying, hey! At least we're not your other kinds of people who are on the real stuck up side, like preps and wangsters *showing off their gold and cars*

Thank you for listening to Michi's rant of the day ^^/ *This is what a real rant looks like, people! razz * Flame me and I'll just ignore. blaugh domokun I speak for all the anime loving/obsessed people who were too afraid to talk in this topic x3/ Don't flame me either for pointing out the wrong things in America, it's the truth! Deal with it. Fear Michi's long posting skills.

im totally european and i dont even like anime very much but im in japanese because i think they have an interesting culture and i thought it would be cool to learn a non-indo european language. Now im the only person in my japanese class who isnt obsessed with anime. all of them tell me about how anime is so cool in japan and blah blah blah but i think thats not true because japanese people probably could give a shi'ite about cartoons considering how apparently everything there is expensive and gas is outrageously pricy(just guessing considering they have like no natural resources besides fish). they probably are at work all day instead of watching Naruto so to all my stupid class mates who are over-glorifying japan SHUT UP!!! YOU LIVE IN THE MOST POWERFUL AND RICH COUNTRY IN THE WORLD (America)WHAT THE F*** MORE DO YOU WANT!!!!

SO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE COUNTRY YOUR INSULTING!!!

... Yeah... sure... Also Canada is a better place (more people come here) but no one is saying one's better than another. And the racism bit? It's known that America has a higher discrimination rate than many countries. Canada is pretty low, but we still do have it. Not as much as America though.

But that's not the point, "FREAK OUT MUCH!?" is all I have to say Mr. Patriot.

i wuzn't saying america is the superior country of the world with my freedom comment, i wuz saying anyone who dislikes the u.s based upon an illogical reason like japonophilia is a botard rolleyes . altho i still don't understand why you WOULD dislike america. people who have done ''bad things" isn't any excuse. you might dislike those people, but disliking the country that they came from makes no sense, unless the entire gov't is corrupt. really..let's think about it...you could just move to another state stare

-Americans and thier beloved guns rofl (My point is why have legallized guns besides Rifles, any other gun is made to kill/harm people...) I know "I have the right to defend myself" speech, but if people weren't alowed to have those types of guns, not so many people would die from gun injuries, plus if they were harder to buy... like not sell them at Kmart and Walmart... sweatdrop

It's okay. xD; Sometimes in English I come off a lot bitchier than I do in Czech, too, and I'm sorry about that.
...
On one side it is, "THE JAPANESE ARE THE BEST!" and on the other side it is, "MY COUNTRY IS THE BEST!" gonk There's no happy medium for some people I guess.

this annoying guy in my japanese class last year kept quoting lines from anime all the time, he loved to say dattebayou a lot, and one day I asked him, 'do you actualy know what that means?' and he says 'well, no, but naruto says it.'
*sigh*

one day I managed to get out of him that he was only taking the class because he likes anime. basically he wanted to show off to his other japanophile online friends that he takes japanese classes? talk2hand
but he never studied, his attempts at trying to get through exams without ever studying were really hilarious. im so glad he failed class and I dont have to put up with him anymore.
rofl

what was even more annoying is when we went for the end of year dinner at a japanese restaurant, everyone else ordered easily in japanese, but he basically knew a few nouns and that was it.
and I happened to be sitting across from him, so he kept asking me how to say this and that kanji, how to ask for something, as well as me having to translate everything the poor waiter was saying, who after a while just ignored his pathetic half-assed attempt at speaking japanese and took his orders in english.
plus, he wanted to ask for ramen, at an expensive, fancy sushi restaurant. gonk

oh my gosh, RAMEN rofl !! WUT A DIP rofl !! lol That's ridiculous. That'd be so much fun to go to a resturaunt 'n order something nice in japanese, 'n he totally wasted the experience talk2hand . My gosh, wut a narutard. *pukes*

When I was younger, I ordered a grilled cheese at the fancy Space Needle in Seattle. Haha, those were good times.

There seems to be one of these guys in every Japanese class. In college, my sister says there's this one guy like that in her class too. He takes Asian Literature with her too, and he practically had went into a coma of joy when they were studying the mythology of the kappa.

Hey, guys, mind getting off your soapboxes about how crap/great America is/isn't and get back on topic?
Seriously, can you guys please stop talking about how “crap” America is. It seems that almost every thread or post on this website is turned into a rant on how much America sucks. Honestly, did you ever stop and think that maybe you were offending someone. I’m American and acknowledge the problems with the country. Although I do believe that every country has problems and it’s unfair compare them, especially without taking everything into consideration. I don’t need people who don’t even live in America telling me how terrible it is. I don’t consider myself an extreme patriot, but I have traveled to many different countries and was able to experience living outside of the US. Before I was just as the kids you see now, I disliked America for dumb reasons that I’m embarrassed to have once thought. I’m not trying to say I’m right and all must obey or anything like that. I’m just saying that it’s offensive and not really anyone’s business, especially if they don’t even live in America.
