- And now you're frustrated because clearly it's a door that says "open" while someone continues yelling at you and there's that unusual scratching noise and it-

- Oh.

You were dreaming. It's pretty obvious now, as everything shifts focus. It would be more accurate to say, you are dreaming. An unusual ease overcomes you, suddenly dissipating the frustration, and even the noise is gone. It doesn't upset you any more.

And just like that the door opens easily.

The dream shifts again but you are still quite aware of who you are. You hear some voices, and experience a series, a short burst of them paired with emotions, colours images, similar to a dream, but not quite. These are [byour ]memories. Those are real. It doesn't upset you any more.

You relive a few memories, with full clarity, and experience the same range of emotions you usually feel with them. Happiness, sadness, relief, anger, joy, regret, pride, and even, nothing at all.

At the end of them all is another door, but you're pretty sure even with your lucid dreaming you did not will this second door. It's locked, and no amount of brute force, even with full control of your dream, can move it open. Something is blocking it, and for those who try to open the door, you wonder if it's yourself.

It slightly upsets you.

OOC: PART 1, MEMORIES

gaia_crown [ Read the prompt above! ] When you're done, write a quick reaction to it. Your character can remember them having left of anywhere, and even for those who don't usually sleep, they may be surprised to find themselves very aware they're sleeping and dreaming.

gaia_crown You CAN see others around you, anyone who has posted in this thread. You MAY interact with them, in this unusual dream. Right now, it's just near darkness, and a door + locked door + some memories you can only see of yourself. Quote anyone you talk to.

gaia_crown Pick THREE of these memory snippet prompts below. Keep each one very short, maybe only around less than 100 words if possible (try to be descriptive and include some event that you can work with later!). Use these memory prompts to write a small description about a memory your character had. Make sure for these memories, it is something you're comfortable with others POTENTIALLY learning about your character. Please separate all three prompts into 3 different paragraphs + their titles to make this easier to read!

gaia_star [ EXAMPLE:
Steve realized he was dreaming, but where exactly was he? As he opened the first door he let a series of dreams pass him by:

REGRET:

HATRED:

If there was one thing for certain it was that Steve absolutely, absolutely hated detention. And here he was again. This was definitely Jim's fault.

The last thing he remembered was drifting off after a long day of workouts, training, and duty assignments, but now he was...dreaming. Dreaming and he knew it, which was weird. Normally he just had flashes of nightmares, and he'd wake up in the middle of the night; thankfully these nights Seren was usually there to comfort him and get him to go back to sleep...but he was fully aware in this dream. And it was...suspicious. The yelling and the scratching and...just all of it.

For all of a second it was suspicious, and then it wasn't anymore and he found himself feeling pretty alright with being there. Being awake in a dream world was perfectly okay with him now, and as soon as he let that feeling settle, the door swung wide open.

    FAMILY:
"Mommy?" asked his father as they lay there on a laid-out sleeping bag. Rhys had been told that the bed needed replacing and that this would do for now, so they shared it until the day the new bed would arrive. "She's gone, buddy, but she loved you. Probably still loves you, wherever she is..."

    HOPELESSNESS:
He sat, slumped over and staring blankly at the dingy wall of the employee locker room at his latest job. Not a single acceptance letter. He'd done everything he could, working and training and studying himself practically to death...but just like that and his life felt like it was over before it ever really got started.

    LIGHT CRUSH:
"...I'd suggest using it sooner, rather then later." She handed him the scar ointment with a smile he'd grown rather fond of since they started hanging out so much, and he tucked it away gratefully.

Once the memories past he came to another door, but when he tried to open it, it wouldn't budge. He tried once, twice more before giving up. No sense in getting himself tired over something in a dream If it opened, it opened. If not, he could just sit here and wait until he finally woke up. He wasn't too fond of the dream so far, anyway. He was just glad the memories that came weren't any of those.

Seren stares around in confusion, trying to figure out where she is and how on earth she got here. Finally it occurs to her that this is a dream. She frowns some, trying to work out why she was in a dream, because she thought she had been sitting on duty at the Lighthouse. Yes, it was boring, but she was very good at not falling asleep during any duty like that, even when it took place when she should have been snuggled in bed with Rhys. How had... And then a feeling of ease overcame her, and she let it go. Why worry about it? She was feeling better.

She blinks as the door she'd been staring in confusion at opens, and steps through into...

    LONELINESS:
She was curled up on her cheap a** futon in the basement 'apartment' she lived in, crying quietly. It had been months since they'd broken up with her, and she was still desperately missing them. Her coworkers were nice, kind, but none of them were actual friends, and none of them wanted to be, either. She could hear voices upstairs, where she wasn't allowed to go anymore, and the sound of Dai drifted down. She gripped her thin blankets tighter, and just let the tears flow. She missed Dai. She missed them, and she had no one to turn to...

    DREAMS:
Her teacher had given her a book on the stars to read today, and said she could take it home, and bring it back when she was done. She had learned what astronomers were today, too, and she was excited. She was sitting out under the stars, with a little flashlight she'd taped red construction paper over, trying to not make her night vision bad, like the book said to do. Well, it said red film, but this was what she had. She could kind of read the book, and she could see the stars... She knew, then and there, she wanted to be an astronomer. She could see it in her future.

    LOVE:
She was having trouble dealing with the sounds he was making as he ate, because they made her think thoughts that she really shouldn't be, and yet when he said he'd be so happy if she made the crepes for him every month... She couldn't deny him. She wanted to do anything to make him happy, the way he made her happy. He had become so important to her, and she didn't know how. She just knew that she'd do almost anything to see him smile.

She started, coming out of her memories, her expression a touch discomfited. She realized she stood in front of another door, and she tried to open it. To her mild annoyance, it refused to open. She stared at it, then looked around, and was very surprised to see Rhys.

"Ah...?" She said, and walked over to him, expression pleased and confused. She hadn't expected to see him until after midnight, when her shift was done, after all.

Then again, this was a dream... Was it really him?

Yuki's brows knitted in confusion, just before he realized that this was not reality. Some of the tension in his body melted away and the door in front of him opened without issue. He had no idea what to expect, considering how vivid some of the "dreams" he'd experienced had turned out to be. Tormenting him in his times awake just as much as when he slept.

    CONFRONTATION:
Who else had he been able to turn to? Awakening from a terrifying, unwanted meeting to find a demon mark across his chest, Yuki had gone to the only demon he trusted to listen. To trust the bakeneko was him being generous, the ghost fully knew that now, because the resulting argument led only to more misfortune.

    DISGUST:
It was difficult for Yuki to hate anyone, even after this. They had hurt him because they had wanted to. Maybe he deserved it. Maybe he was paying for his misdeeds in life that he couldn't remember... Were all demons like these people, at their core?

    TREPIDATION:
The fae had become increasingly frustrated with him, and this time he couldn't blame her. Playful attitudes around others had lessened, but not because he was spending more time with her or trying to make amends. Avoidance, lies, dismissing questions... He wasn't going to be able to hide this forever.

When the memories faded and left him... Wherever it was he was supposed to be, Yuki frowned to himself and rubbed a hand self-consciously over the front of his shirt. He'd done it more times than he could count, like he could rub the mark away, or ease the constant tightness in his chest whenever he thought about it.

He realized that there was another door near him, as well as a pair he did not recognize. They seemed to know one another, however. Yuki remained a distance from them, quietly listening for any hint as to what might be going on this time. He didn't bother trying to open the new door himself.

User Image "Will you stop yelling! Some people are trying to sleep, and some are trying to sneak into their rooms while they do so, and I certainly would prefer it if you did not wake them up it is most inconsiderate--oh."

A lucid dream! How unusual. She doesn't usually remember dreams, let alone have a lucid one. Toki cheerfully slams open the door, walking straight through.

    FRUSTRATION:
"Brother. You must learn to relax! Sometimes I worry about you. You need not be so intent on your work -- yes, yes, I know you are the eldest child, but our parents do not expect either of us to carry on the family business, goodness..."

    GOALS:
She stands on the top of the mountain her city is built along, watching the fireworks and listening to the sounds of the festival below. Someday, when she has become as accomplished an explorer as her parents, she will return here, build her own house on the cliff-side, and spend her retirement in peace and relaxation. But until then...onwards!

    COMPLIANCE:
"Yes, yes, no more taking photos of people when they're sleeping, yes especially if I do not know them, yes even more so if someone paid me to do it, I completely understand, mother." She smiles in what she hopes is an appropriately contrite (and believable) way, and crosses her fingers behind her back. From the other room, her father gives her a particularly knowing look, and loads more film into her camera.

User Image "My goodness! It has been a long time since I reminisced -- UGH."

She rubs her face, getting very, very tired of walking into doors. Hmm? This one will not open. It seems like there are other people around, but she is immediately distracted with checking her sleeves and pockets, making sure her camera is still on her.

Dreaming for Joy had become synonymous to Oh s**t, what now? and the best she could hope for was to experience something new but undoubtedly still messed up. It should have been weird for her to be so accepting right now. Rather than suspicious or nervous or the usual assortment of feelings she would feel when she came to realize she was dreaming, she was actually fine with everything.

Even with the first door. Even when it opened.

There were others present, which didn't surprise Joy, but she was a little bit more focused on something else.

LIGHT ANNOYANCE:
"Ano ba naman anak, you just came out of the hospital. Are you sure you should be riding again?"
"'Nay, you worry too much. I'll be fine." the assurance came with a roll of Joy's eyes before she pedaled off. Her mother was always like this, acting as if the warehouse incident was anything similar to her ******** up as a child.

HOPE:
"One day, 'tay, I'm gonna have at least three kids! All daughters!" The determination in her voice was so strong it could have bent steel.
Her father could only stare at her before calling to her mother, "Mara, come here and remind your child she's still ten years old."

REGRET:
"Sign here, and here, and here. With that settled, Welcome to Deus Ex Machina."

The last memory had Joy's face set in a grimace. And it's with this expression that she stares at the second door. She doesn't hesitate to try and open it. The knob doesn't so much as rattle from her efforts. She's certain she isn't happy about her latest situation.

She didn't sleep much since the time with the tree, most dreams had been scatterings of nightmares, so as she fell asleep she felt there was going to be an issue there had to be.

There was a door to a cabin, to something, and she struggled to open it, as it opened she noticed others she would talk to them but she was distracted.

NOSTALGIA: They were sitting outside, he was bruised but smiling as he talked to her, his hand resting on her shoulder. They were close in age and his smile made her feel happy and protected.

REGRET: Her hand closed over the artifact and the world imploded. Why had she touched it? Why did she feel she needed it? Why didn't she just put it back?

LOVE: A face that tried to hide everything, but a slight smile. She watched him as he was talking and tried not to laugh, before leaping on his back and hugging him.

The images passed her, making her feel conflicted. Before her now was a second door and she reached out to touch it turning the knob but it refused to open, leaving her frustrated and wanting to kick the door down. Instead she sat down and waited. It was just a dream anyway, one filled with memories.

When the door didn't suddenly open to reveal some terrifying being Jason was left confused. He had been dreaming he was sure. Or...was he dreaming now?
Regardless it didn't seem to phase him, the normally fretful hunter feeling relaxed. The voice that was shouting at him was gone, taking away the sense of urgency.

Only when he felt at peace did the door open for him, revealing a surge of emotions as memories surfaced.

FEAR:
"S-someone help me..." the child cried, sobbing as the shadows danced across the wall, the room engulfed in darkness. Tears streamed down his face as he held a teddy bear close, chilling voices taunting him, telling him what he already knew. No one was coming to help.

SADDNESS
"Please wake up...." He begged the sleeping girl, blinking back tears, his heart aching. What would he do if she never woke up.....

JOY
Her eyes open, whispering words he had longed to hear for so long. The hunter bends down to kiss his fiancée , feelings of happiness overflowing.

The memories leave him overwhelmed, but the last one giving him strength. He rubbed his eyes, trying not to smile too much. There was another door, and this one didn't seem like it wanted to open.

Jason stood back, now aware of others appearing in this strange place. Joy was here, having no luck in opening the door either, as well as a few unfamiliar faces.

There weren't just hunters either, but students as well. Including a very familiar-

Oh, s**t

"Y-y-y-u....." He stammered harshly, unable to say the ghost boils name. He wasn't exactly frightened, but...

Sherry frowned at the door. It was open, and she didn’t remember why it had been closed or why it had been so frustrating. Had it been frustrating? Or had she imagined that? Dreams were odd.

Oh. She was dreaming wasn’t she? Yes, yes she was. It was strange, feeling the scene shift around her like it did. It was normal, but it also wasn’t. It was like she’d gone through the door even though she hadn’t. Or maybe she had. It was hard to tell with dreams, sometimes. She knew that. She’d thought a lot about the makeup of dreams lately, what with Lucky and his ability to enter dreams. Oh, maybe that’s what was going on, though she didn’t remember discussing them having another dreamtalk. Maybe she’d forgotten?

Sherry stopped – there was something just there - a feeling, no wait it shifted. Ah! Just there, like a half formed thought, or dream, or memory… Something she could almost reach out and touch, but not quite. No wait, it was here –

Friendship
The smell of a baking cake was thoroughly filling the room. Sherry laughed. She had to wonder why she’d never really talked to Caroline before. She was brilliant and kind and just all around pretty great. After this she’d have to be sure they hung out more often, really –
A memory. Not a dream. Sherry remembered that day. The memory left as quickly as it had come, and before Sherry could wonder more about it –

Defeat
She sank back into the infirmary bed with a sigh and a wince. They told her it would be fine in a few days. Her hands hurt, her side hurt – and she’d nearly died. She’d been rescued. Not strong enough to stand up to the thing by herself, utterly and completely defeated. Helpless. Worthless as a hunter. Maybe it would be better if she just didn’t ever get out of this bed –

Admiration
She was on her way to the office of the Death Lead, Caelius. She was going to ask him about extra missions. He wasn’t even the lead of her own department, but she agreed with Armagnac. He was strong and he was pretty cool – Armagnac certainly admired him, and Sherry figured she did, too. Who better to learn from-

The memory, like the ones before, faded quickly, though it had been vivid and strong and so very real. And it was indeed a memory. Oh wow. Her younger self had admired that man. Just thinking about it now made her arm ache. Reflexively her thumb twisted the ring on her finger. Certainly admiration wasn’t what she felt now. A certain sort of respect, yes, but not admiration. Certainly no—

The thought was cut short as Sherry realized there was a new door in her path. “Another door to open,” she said as she gave it a try. It didn’t move. Sherry tried again. Nope. It was stuck. Sherry frowned. What was that thing Lucky had taught her? Right. It was a dream and she could control it, so, Sherry put her hand on the door handle again and willed it to open. Nope. The door stayed shut. “Dumb door.”

Stevania eyed the door before her. It should be open. She wanted it to be open. So why wasn’t it open?

Wait, why was she even mad about it? She didn’t quite remember – and it no longer mattered, because the door was open. “Ha! I knew it! My dream, my rules!” That was how all things should be, really. No silly dream door was going to keep her out.

See, she was already past it. Inside with… others? Oh, and who were they? Before Steve could even ask, something tugged at her. Not physically, but mentally. It took all of her attention.

Satisfaction
The screaming had stopped. Blood dripped from her clawed hands, still warm, still fresh. “Perfect,’ she said. Finally, something had gone right.

Power
Steve grinned. The weapon in her hands was different – not like her own bow at all. Not just in shape, but in character. In power. Yes, with this she’d be stronger. With this, she’d be greater. Steve grinned wider and gripped the weapon tighter. Stupid hunters. They didn’t deserve something so fine. Steve, though, oh she’d put it to good use.

Nostalgia
Home. She was home. It… wasn’t quite right though. Steve looked around her new room and sighed. It had echoes of home. A similar style, and similar feel – but it wasn’t quite right. It was missing her family things, it was missing her family. Close, so close yet so different. Her new home, with its echoes of old. She missed her old home, but this new room would have to do.

--
Steve blinked at the door before her. That was odd. The dream had decided to give her memories for some reason. When she got her weapon, when she moved into the tower, when she’d –
“Just what is this door?” She asked no one in particular. Did it lead to more memories? Did she want to see them?

She wasn’t sure, but she did want the door to open. So it was very frustrating when the door didn’t open.

Lawr was asleep. His dreams weren't normally like this though, generally much flatter and more serene than the noise he had been combating mere moments before. He understood now though where he was, exhaling and relaxing. It was fine. Everything was fine. Even as the memories washed over and past him it was fine.

He reached out and pressed his hand to the door in front of him, unsure why it wouldn't open, unsure where he was, unsure - in fact - of everything.

Quote:
FRIENDSHIP
He got off the jetski and keeled over onto the deck of the pier, closing his eyes dramatically.

"I thought I was going to DIE Melvin. DIE."

Quote:
FAMILY
Making meals for his family was complicated, Rodney had his own limitations on what he would eat, happiest with a vegan diet, one which hadn't really hurt anyone. The boys preferred meat, they preferred more meat on their bones. Mara he was still trying to understand and it would take a little bit to get a proper handle on her tastes. But as he laid out the plates, he felt like he was home.

Quote:
HATRED
There was only one person who Lawrence had ever hated and he felt it more acutely in that moment than he had at any other point in his life, watching the older man dismiss his mother without her there any longer to defend herself. He didn't understand emotions the same way as other people, but he knew that this, of all things was wrong.

Chris knew he was asleep. He'd laid down and played his newly runic 3DS until his eyes began to water and close and then he tossed and turned, his brain absorbed by video games, until eventually he drifted off into the muddiness of exhaustion.

Muddy until he was dreaming. There was a cabin with a door and he wondered which game this was because it had to be, he was in video game brain mode. It reminded him of that reboot episode that was a spoof of Evil Dead but the thought fled as fast as it was there. He could hear voices with his hand on the knob and then suddenly..

    DISGUST
The door to the bathroom closed and Chris shivered in his towel. A new place, a new house, a new hair color, a new name. He wouldn't mess it up. He promised. He would be good like father wanted. He looked in the mirror at his hair, auburn this time, and picked up the scissors as he ignored the bruises on his body that would eventually be hidden by his clothes. Chris looked at himself and frowned as he took the first snip of his bangs. It was his fault this happened anyway, wasn't it? His stomach curled sickly at the sight of himself. He swallowed it and hoped the feeling would wash down the drain with the last of the dye.

    HOPE
Chris must have relived the moment in his mind a hundred times, a hundred thousand times.
"I'm with an organization that fights the shadows you see.." They'd told him that and Chris hadn't believed it because at this point there were worse things than the shadows that crept on the outskirts of his vision and lurked darkly in every house they'd lived in. "You can join us. Leave here. If you agree we will take you to our facility to live and for all that matters in this world," a hand had waved, "You'd be dead."
Yes, yes a hundred times yes.
"Pack a bag, put your affairs in order if you want," there was something dark in the way it was said, "And we will come for you in a week."

    VICTORY
He'd had a plan but it went out the window. He'd had a time frame to line up with his impending departure from the normal world but that also was discarded. He just couldn't do it anymore. Chris scrubbed the blood from his hands, smeared them on a towel, and tried to stop himself from crying. And laughing. And wheezing. He didn't know what to feel anymore but he was free.
    He'd won.
    And soon he'd be gone.

HIs hand was on another knob and coming out of the memories he realized it wouldn't open. Chris felt like his eyes stung from the last memory but swiping at them did nothing.

"It's a dream.." he reminded himself in a shakey breath as he looked around.

There were others.. And the only one he recognized was the halloween person he'd met not so long ago.

"Oh. Here it is! What a relief. Hmm, it looks like I've brought almost everything with me. This is a most detailed dream--oops!"

Toki juggles her camera a little, shoving the potion that threatened to tip out of her sleeves back in. Inventory assured, she looks around at the other people gathered here.

"Hmm. So many familiar faces! Faces. ...I hope I can remember their names. What did father say? 'Just smile and nod'. A good plan. Oh! Hello! Hellooo!"

She spots a recently-made acquaintance, and rushes over--oh dear. They look even more uncomfortable than last time.

"Why, what an odd coincidence! Are you part of my dream? Am I part of your dream? Are we even real--oh, forgive me. I did not mean to ask so many questions. Are you alright? Don't worry. Everything seems perfectly fine," she says, smiling and nodding.

In the collective dream Chris seemed less uneasy than he had in the haunted house. Whatever he'd remembered had affected him but the feeling was fading and it most likely had something to do with the fact that he just knew it had to be a dream.

"I think maybe we are all in the same dream? It's happened before..." Chris just now thought to look down at himself and found he was in his usual hunter clothes and not in his pajamas at all. "I'm okay. Are you okay?"

Blue eyes blinked under his floppy bangs, "Toki right?"

Out in the human world, Beka hadn't dreamt at all. His nights had been serene, the perfect counter to the overwhelming tumult of his days. Here in the tower, he had some damned dream or another almost every night, most of them common irritants, but some like this. Spaces he could walk around in. People he could talk to. Tangible reality in his head. He didn't like it.

The horseman hunched deeper into his patchy cloak, drawing his knees up to his chest and watching everyone who passed with tired, sullen eyes. Every so often, a sinuous string of memory found him, snaking its way—

FAMILY

sand so much sand he should have felt at home, content, but all he could think was isn't this nice, wouldn't saan love to see this

he'd have to bring him here one day

hulking little brother traipsing through the sand one day they would rule here again

one day

—inside, and he physically pushed it away, skinny little arm whipping out of an otherwise inert pile of fabric. He wondered if he might stay here until he woke, bundled up and safe from idiocy. He hadn't tried the door opposite the one he had entered, but enough of these ingrates had rattled the knob for him to know it was—

ADMIRATION

He watched the priestesses work with muted awe, mostly silent even then, before he had learned that words were only good for evoking anger and fear. There really wasn't much to see, since most visions were woven in the mind, but the serenity and poise they exuded was calming. He could see what had drawn his mother here, what had made her dream of being taller, stronger... Deathier, a wall to protect her priestess from all that would do her harm.

His other mother turned to look his way, slow and deliberate as always, and Beka smiled and waved, the barest curling of his fingers. Maybe he could be graceful too.

"s**t," he muttered into his hood, shifting his legs so they were crossed instead. He pondered embracing his foolishness, tugging and kicking at the locked door just to calm the beetles in his stomach. Anything was better than—

Beka stood with a huff, yanking off his hood and glaring at the hunter and pixiu as if they'd spit in his tea. He then stalked over to the only other member of the Four Clans he could see nearby, internally rolling his eyes just a little. Conquest. Ugh.

"I'm sure we'll find out soon enough. I hope there's candy." His monotone suggested he was being sarcastic, but it was the humans' Halloween, after all.
