Poison Apple
Everyone had heard about the Snow White fairy tale, when the evil queen gave Snow White a poisoned apple, she took a bite and fell into a deep sleep. The story might just be fiction, but what if I told you the poisoned apple actually exist?
The apple within the jar might seem just like a normal apple, but the person that took a bite from it would beg to differ. Having eaten a piece of the apple that had been cut out, the unfortunate person was almost immediately plague by blurred vision, loss of balance, rashes, slurred speech and convulsions. All symptoms similar to deadly nightshade poisoning. Thankfully the victim was sent to the hospital just in time, and the doctors were able to deduce that it was belladonna poisoning, ignoring the ramblings about an apple. As the culprit sits quietly back at home on the dining table, it's flesh not even browning as most apples do.
The original German fairy tale of Snow White written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm is quite different than the Disney movie portrays. The Queen tried three times to kill Snow White, the apple being the last. Sam finds the concept behind the essence to be interesting but makes sure to leave the apple well within it's glass jar.
The soul of the raevan came from a male striped skunk named Hurtz. He was taken from an illegal zoo and put under Sam's care to rehabilitate him. He was aggressive and did not take to the other female skunks in his enclosure so the Zoo admin decided he would be euthanized. Sam couldn't bring herself to kill an animal just because it wouldn't quickly be docile so she used his soul to create her Raevan.
The striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is a skunk of the genus Mephitis that is native to southern Canada, the United States and northern Mexico. It is currently listed as least concern by the IUCN on account of its wide range and ability to adapt to human-modified environments.
It is a polygamous omnivore with few natural predators, save for birds of prey. The striped skunk has a long history of association with humans, having been trapped and captively bred for its fur and kept as an exotic pet. It is one of the most recognizable of North America's animals, and is a popular figure in cartoons and children's books.
The striped skunk is a stoutly-built, short-limbed animal with a small, conical head and a long, heavily furred tail. Adult males are 10% larger than females, with both sexes measuring between 52–77 cm in total body length and usually weighing 1.8–4.5 kg (4.0–9.9 lb), though some may weigh 5.5 kg (12 lb).[8] The feet are plantigrade with bare soles, and are not as broad or flat as those of hog-nosed skunks. The forefeet are armed with five long, curved claws adapted for digging, while the those on the hind feet are shorter and straighter.
The color patterns of the fur vary greatly, but generally consist of a black base with a white stripe extending from the head which divides along the shoulders, continuing along the flanks to the rump and tail. Some specimens have a white patch on the chest, while others bear white stripes on the outer surface of the front limbs. Brown or cream-colored mutations occasionally occur.
Like all skunks, the striped skunk possesses two highly developed scent glands on each side of the a**s, containing about 15 milliliters of musk each. This oily, yellow-colored musk consists of a mixture of powerfully odorous thiols (sulphur analogues of alcohols, in older sources called mercaptans ) , which can be sprayed at a distance of several meters. If sprayed on the eyes, this compound can cause a temporary burning sensation. The odor of this musk was likened by Ernest Thompson Seton to a mixture of perfume musk, essence of garlic, burning sulfur and sewer gas "magnified a thousand times", though Clinton Hart Merriam claimed that it isn't "one tenth" as offensive as that produced by minks and weasels.
The English word "skunk" has two root words of Algonquian and Iroquoian origin, specifically seganku (Abenaki) and scangaresse (Huron). The Cree and Ojibwe word shee-gawk is the root word for Chicago, which means 'skunk-land'. Alternative English names for the striped skunk include common skunk, Hudsonian skunk, northern skunk, black-tailed skunk and prairie polecat. The latter name was originally used by English settlers, who noted the animal's similarity to the European polecat. This association likely resulted in the striped skunk's subsequent unfavorable reputation as a poultry thief, despite it being a much less destructive animal than the true polecat. The name "Alaska sable" was employed by furriers during the late 19th century.
The striped skunk is polygamous, and normally breeds once a year, though yearling females who have failed to mate may enter a second estrous cycle a month after the first. The mating season usually occurs between mid-February to mid-April, though it is delayed at higher latitudes. Prior to copulating, the males' testicles swell during the January period, with maximum size being attained in March. Males during this period will cover much ground in their search for females, sometimes covering 4 km per night.
When a male locates a female, he will approach her from the rear and lick her genitals, then bite her on the nape before copulating. A single male may have a harem of several females, which he mates with and defends against other males for a period of about 36 days. Once the mating period has finished, the impregnated females confine themselves to their dens, while the males attempt to rebuild their fat reserves.
The gestation period lasts around 59–77 days, with kits being born at about mid-May to early June. Litters generally consist of 2–10 kits, though a litter of 18 is known from Pennsylvania. Kits are born blind and sparsely furred, weighing 25–40 grams. The eyes open after around three weeks, and are weaned after 42–56 days. Although their musk is still undeveloped, kits of this age will instinctively assume the defensive hand stand position when threatened. At this point, the kits may accompany their mother outside the den, becoming independent after 2½ months.
The striped skunk may dig its own dens, though it will appropriate those abandoned by other animals should the opportunity present itself. These dens are normally used only in late fall, winter, and early spring, while females with unweaned kits make use of them in late spring and summer. In cultivated areas, striped skunks will dig their dens in fencerows, likely because they are less likely to be disturbed by machinery or livestock. In winter it is common for a single den to be occupied by multiple females and a single male. During this period, the striped skunk saves its energy by lowering its body temperature from 38 °C to 32 °C. Although it will forage for short periods in winter, it primarily depends on its fat reserves in cold weather, and can lose as much as 50% of its body weight.
The striped skunk inhabits a wide variety of habitats, particularly mixed woodlands, brushy corners and open fields interspersed with wooded ravines and rocky outcrops. Some populations, particularly in northwestern Illinois, prefer cultivated areas over uncultivated ones. While primarily an insectivore, the striped skunk is adaptable enough to incorporate other animals and even vegetable matter into its diet. The most frequently consumed insects include grasshoppers, beetles, crickets, and caterpillars. In the winter and spring months, the striped skunk will supplement its diet with vertebrates such as white-footed mice, voles, eggs and the chicks of ground nesting birds. Striped skunks inhabiting California's coastal areas will feed on crabs and beached fish. While not adapted for chasing fleet-footed prey, at least one specimen was observed pursuing gray cottontails into their burrows. When in season, the skunk will also consume vegetable matter, such as apples, blueberries, black cherries, ground cherries, corn and nightshade.
Because of its formidable defensive capability, the striped skunk has few natural enemies. Mammalian predators typically avoid skunks, unless they're starving. Such predators include cougars, coyotes, bobcats, badgers, and red and gray foxes. Predatory birds, including golden and bald eagles, and great horned owls tend to have greater success in hunting skunks, though they still risk being blinded by their prey's musk.
The striped skunk is one of North America's most sought after fur bearers, and was once the second most harvested after the muskrat. Its fur is intrinsically valuable, being durable and having rich luster, though this latter trait decreases with wear and exposure to sunlight. Skunk pelts are divided into four grades, with the most prized being the ones with a greater amount of black. These grades are further subdivided in value according to their locality, with the most valuable occurring in northern regions, where the fur is finer and darker. Skunks are notable for being easy to trap, even approaching traps they'd been previously caught in. Because skunks are difficult to kill without having them discharge their musk (and thus ruin their fur) they were typically dispatched with a paralyzing blow to the lower back or drowned if caught in a box trap.
Skunk farming largely began during the late 1880s, when there was much foreign demand for their skins, and intensive trapping had largely extirpated the more valuable mostly black-colored specimens. Captive breeding of skunks proved relatively simple when compared to mink and marten farming, as skunks are easier to tame and have less specialized dietary needs. Emphasis was placed on selectively breeding the tamest and darkest colored skunks. Prior to the First World War, skunk pelts were primarily shipped to Europe until better methods of deodorizing and processing the skins lead to increased interest in selling them for North American consumption. Despite being easy to breed and manage, skunk farming wasn't overly profitable, as the relatively low price of the pelts didn't compensate for the costs in maintaining them. Nevertheless, raising skunks was considered good practice for amateur fur farmers wishing to later move on to farming more valuable fur bearers like martens, sable, mink and silver foxes.
Name: Reinhart Nickname: Rein, Charming Age: Frei Birthday: March 6th Zodiac: Pisces Gender: Male Sexuality: Aromantic
Stage: Frei Fel Essence: Poisoned Apple Soul: Striped Skunk Alightment: Lawful Evil Rune: Letter "A" Post Color: Dark Red, bolded
Appearance Height: Floats 6'2" Weight: 80 lbs Eyes: Red Hair Color: White on top with white flare towards the back, red on sides and rest of hair. Hair Style: Long and wild, tied up in high pony tail. Skin: Sun-kissed pale Piercings: Upper lobe ring piercing, regular ear pierce. Voice: Tom Hiddleston Theme Song: Poison by Alice Cooper.
Personality Reinhart has just been born but already shows a strong charismatic personality. He is very easy to talk to and enjoys being the center of attention. It seems something regal has carried into his personality from his supposedly royal made essence, as he is more likely to bow and kiss your hand in greeting rather than offer a handshake. He carries himself like a royal, shoulders back and excellent posture. He dislikes getting dirty or being messy in general, a very neat and orderly person. The other thing he outright hates is a liar, he will go out of his way to point them out and make them suffer the consequences. He's already showing signs of subtle manipulation, getting people to do what he truly wants using his magnetic charm. Recently he's discovered he enjoys the past time of 'people watching', which usually means he's sitting around the zoo judging people walking by on their style and behavior. He judges only in his mind, but he's still judging you.
Likes: anything apple scented, being told he's handsome, honesty, classical music, being given presents, people watching Dislikes: liars, dirty or messy people, being ignored, being told he's done something wrong, people pulling his hair Fears: Being ignored and abandoned Dreams: Still thinking of his future
Feeding Apples: Reinhart's essence is an apple, albeit a poisoned one, but he still takes great sustenance from anything made with apples. Food and drinks he absorbs the apple from lose any sort of apple taste to them. Plant Based Poisons: This is a more uncommon source of sustenance, as these kind of things are not widely available. But any poison derived from a plant or a poisonous plant itself can sustain him in a pinch.
Powers Only ones shown have been learned. All others are unknown until discover
Poison Immunity (Passive): Reinhart is immune to plant based poisons. He suffers no ill effects if exposed to them, in fact he takes some measure of sustenance from them. Venom and other poisons still hurt him. He discovered this ability at Ryder's birthday party, touching the poisonous frei with no adverse effects.
Aroma of Asphyxiation (active): Reinhart normally smells like fresh apples but if cornered or in danger Reinhart releases an oil onto his skin that immediately evaporates and begins to fill the air. The oil causes the affected person to start having breathing problems, similar to an asthma attack. The more it is inhaled the worse it gets until the person passes out from lack of oxygen. It is most effective when up close to Reinhart or in a confined area. However this power does very little work in a large area or if it is windy, maybe just causing someone to be slightly short of breath.
Poison Touch(active): Reinhart can make himself poisonous to the touch. When in danger or in extreme emotional distress Reinhart secretes a poisonous oil on his skin that causes effects similar to belladonna poisoning. The longer someone touches him the worse the effects are. Minor touches cause a hallucinogenic reaction with dilated pupils and sensitivity to light, even shortness of breath. Longer exposure causes extreme effects such as vomiting, lose of balance, delirium, and convulsions.
Poison Object (active): When he wants to cause damage without being personally involved, Reinhart can infuse items with his signature cyanide poison. By touching the object he causes poison to become part of it. It's not a coating, the item is now effectively poisonous to the touch. It's effects depend on how long Reinhart held the item. He is partial the jewelry when doing this as smaller objects take less energy to poison. Large objects take a great deal of energy and do not have extreme effects. He can also remove the poison with the same touch.
Future Power: Apple of Chance. To be discovered when he grows
Future Power: Sleeping Beauty. To be discovered when he grows.
STATS Charisma 29: Reinhart is smoother than silk with his words and actions. He seems to always know just what to say or do to get the reaction he desires from his target.
Intelligence 28: Rein's second highest stat. Rein learns very quickly, usually through observation and study. It helps him adapt to situations on a dime and come up with the best way to get what he wants.
Humor 26: Quick with a joke and always with a smile, Rein can keep the party going with his good humor. He is always aware of his audience and ensures they enjoy his company.
Friendliness 25: The dazzling smile on Reinhart's face always seems genuine, even if his intentions are the opposite. Reinhart appears easily approachable and acts very caring when the need arises.
Creativity 24: Coming up with ways to get what he wants sometimes takes a bit of out of the box thinking. He's not above coming up with new and fun ways to exert his demands, never using the same way twice.
Strength 24: Reinhart is fairly strong, at least enough to defend himself if necessary. He works out to keep a fit and trim figure.
Magic 22: Rein's magic is weak given his young age and his actual powers. Poison magic is very subtle and if it were any stronger he would risk causing a lot of problems with accidental poisonings.
Endurance 20: Reinhart does not put up with annoying or stressful for very long. If something starts to get on his nerves he will look for the quickest way to end it. Unless he must watch his behavior he will ensure he is as stress free as possible.

Name: Samael McLauren Nicknames: Sam or Sammy Gender: Female Age: 36 Race: Human Sexuality: Bisexual Relationship Status: Single
Occupation: Head Keeper of the Nocturnal House and Reptile House at Durem Zoo, specifically works with nocturnal animals and snakes.
Likes: Sam is a low maintenance girl preferring simple foods and simple drinks, very meat and potatoes with a cold beer kinda girl. She's never been one for fancy things but she's hardly afraid to try something new. Having traveled all over the world with her parents she's tasted all sorts of unique foods. She prefers home cooked over premades but will never say no to a good round of hot wings at the local sports bar. Twilight is her favorite time as the song of the night begins. From insects to amphibians singing into the night she feels so at peace. Sam lives outside the city, loving being closer to nature. So star gazing is another loved hobby of hers. She can identify most constellations and can even find her way if lost through mapping the stars. This being said Sam's favorite vacations are camping, hiking, and anything that involves being outside. Sometimes she goes to visit whatever place her parents are studying just to get out of the area completely.
Dislikes: Above all Sam hates anyone who abuses or otherwise hurts animals out of cruelty. She believes all animals have a place in this world, whether as a beloved pet or wild moose. She's not always gotten along with administrative types, not taking much stock in people who are afraid to get their hands dirty. She knows there are those who must make decisions but how good are they if the person doesn't understand what they are deciding? Warm beer or spilled beer is a down right sin in her eyes, never waste good stuff.
Physical Description: A stocky Irish woman, Sam is no thin waif with a muscular build and a bit of plump around the waist. She stands 5'8" and weighs a good 195 lbs. Her eyes are bright green and her skin is sun kissed tan. Her hair is naturally red and damn long, down past her rear! For a bit of color she bleaches the tips of her hair in a gradient. She doesn't wear fancy clothes, unless the Zoo is having a big party. Instead she can usually be found in her jeans, snake print mid-drift, and cowboy boots. Her hair is left free unless she's in the bush, then she braids it.
Personality: Laid back for the most part, Sam doesn't get too excited. When not at work she's usually kicking her heels up on the porch enjoying a cold beer. Keeping calm is what keeps you safe out in the wilderness. But once you unleash the fire in the red head do be careful! She wrangles some vicious creatures and ain't scared of you!
Raised by a geologist and a botanist Sam has a deep love and respect for nature. She believes animals are not dangerous, it's people who make them dangerous. She is always striving to protect often misunderstood animals when she can through education and experience rather than board rooms and picket lines. She's not one for a fight, she feels people can make good choices when given the right information. Children are her favorite, seeing the curiosity in their eyes and how easily fear can be removed by an educational experience.
At work Sam's love of animals is easily seen as she coos at the chameleons and fawns over the frogs. Reptiles have always been her favorite but she also adores many of the nocturnal animals, since many get a bad rap.
History: Sam is the only child of a geologist father and a botanist mother. Her maternal grandparents were wealthy bankers while her paternal grandparents worked in law. Her father showed an early love of geology and constantly upset his mother with his romps through the trails near their posh home. Her mother preferred plants but her family found her preference of meat eating and parasitic plants to be rather morbid. Neither family approved of the marriage, wishing their respective child to marry someone who could help them settle down. But her parents were madly in love, seeing their lives together in the wild world beyond the city. Neither expected to be parents given their adventurous lifestyle but they took the addition to their family well.
Both Sean and Mary Ann's parents thought the child would anchor their wayward children to one spot for once but sadly they were mistaken. Her mother insisted Sam have real experiences, not be cooped up in some room where creativity and individuality were squashed. She was home schooled, each parent taking on different subjects they could connect to wherever they were. Her father would teach her math, science, and history, showing how the land they were studying was formed and what events took place there. Her mother gave her language and reading lessons, ensuring her daughter always had access to information about whatever she was curious about. While Sam enjoyed exploring alone she always made friends in the villages and towns they stayed in. She still writes to many friends all over, going to visit them on vacations. One of the places she visited she meet Tau, an Egyptian working with his father out on the African plains. They formed a fast friendship and, when Tau decided to come to Duram, Sam ensured he had a place to work at the zoo.
Once she got her high school diploma, Sam decided she wanted to continue her education and study animals. However this could not be learned out in the jungles or plains of the world so Sam contacted her grandparents. They were delighted to have their granddaughter near by but understood she was not raised to be a socialite. They provided her with simple accommodations and paid for her tuition. The transition was difficult for the first two years but eventually she found her natural rhythm again. The city had a wildlife all it's own and was fun to explore. Sam's naturally friendly attitude helped her win friends and get some work volunteering at the local animal shelter. Finally Sam achieved a Master's Degree in Zoology. During this time she would visit her parents during the summers, studying large snakes which peaked her interest
It was during her last days at the shelter that the owner showed her a job opening at the Duram Zoo. Sam hadn't been interested in that kind of work, she'd wanted to return to her parents and continue traveling with them. But working at the shelter gave her a sense of caring for animals who had no one to protect them. So she decided to check it out. Duram Zoo's proactive work in rehabilitation really peaked Sam's interest, so much so she went for the interview. The job was for a keeper in the reptile house, Sam's favorite animals. Acing the interview along with her degree, Sam went to work.
Her excellent work ethic and ease around the dangerous animals earned her a promotion in her first year to Head Keeper over the reptile house. When the old Head Keeper of the Nocturnal House retired, the Zoo decided to combine the position with Sam's as she easily ran her area with little supervision. She divides her time equally between the two areas, ensuring her charges are well taken care of and her keepers trained well.
Sam still keeps in contact with her parents either through letters, postcards, or even sat phone conversations. They are quite proud of her even if she doesn't live as nomadic as they use to.

A bit of a wild man with the same bright red hair as his daughter, Sean still free climbs up cliff faces and repels. His favorite places are Nepal and Mongolia. Mr. McLauren is very much a lover of telling jokes, and sadly for everyone else they are always dad jokes. So be prepared to roll your eyes.
Mary Ann McLauren ne Janson: Mother, 56. Mrs. McLauren is a feisty woman who isn't afraid to speak her mind.
