          Who: Dior, Rowan, Rhys, Samael
          When: Early evening
          Where: Zoo, Durem
          Weather: Clear skies, chilly

They had closed the shop an hour earlier than usual so they would be able to catch a ride to Durem. The ride itself was mostly uneventful with no rain or snow in sight. It was however a bit chilly with the temperature expecting to drop even more.

Dior had her face against the window, her eyes wide and alert as she took in the surroundings. There wasn’t much to look at just trees, the paved road and the occasional car that zoomed by. Rowan sat in the middle and Rhys at the other end.

The last two days had been a bit difficult to adapt to, mostly for Rhys. The witch glanced at her nephew who had his arms crossed and a pout from what she could see. It was a classic case of the older sibling feeling ignored by the younger, or feeling like the younger was taking too much of their space.

Thus Rowan had suggested a visit to the zoo for some family bonding. From the outside she could hear the sound of chimpanzees and a bird’s shrill.

“We’re here!” Like magic his pout disappeared, replaced with excitement.

“Don’t wander far, stay close,” she reminded them both. Rowan zipped Rhys’ jacket and adjusted his scarf and turned to Dior and did the same. Once out of the car they stopped by the zoo’s map and tried to make a plan.

“Let’s go to the tigers first!” He pointed to a dot in the middle of the map.

“Let’s go to the this first,” Dior pointed at another point.

Let’s go see this first,” Rowan corrected her and inspected the point she had her finger on. The Nocturnal House. It was closer than the Tiger’s Den, which was across the map. “We can go visit the Nocturnal House on the way to the Tiger’s Den.”

“Or we can go to the Tiger’s Den first and then when we come back go to the Nocturnal House,” Rhys suggested matter-of-factly. Rowan sighed inwardly.

“I’m going to let fate decide,” she stated firmly, pulling a coin from her purse. If either had any objections then they could go take it up with the goddesses. “Heads for Rhys, tails for Dior.”

Dior’s eyes brightened and she clapped her hands excitedly. She, for one, loved this game.

Once the coin landed the choice was decided: Nocturnal House. Sullenly Rhys started walking down the path and Dior skittered to follow right behind him. Rowan let out a deep breath and started the trek.

It didn’t take them too long to find it.

“Read it?” Dior looked at Rhys expectantly, her finger pointing at the plaque with the animal she hadn’t seen before.

Can you please read it,” he replied ‘correcting’ her. “In memory of Hurtz…” he muttered a few things. “Illegal zoos… animals… sad… passed away…” his frown deepened as he concluded the skunk had died due to abuse. He looked at Dior uncertain of how to explain all that.

In that moment Rowan cleared her throat and ushered them inside, sparing him from having to. The inside lighting was dim, but it had just enough light to read the plaques by each animal.

“That engraving was of a skunk,” Rowan told Dior. Admittedly she didn’t know much about them other than they, well, stunk.

Dior parted her side to go put her face against the encasing of a cricket. Her antennas flicked around wildly even Rhys had to come over and see what she was checking out.

"And that, ladies and gentlemen, ends the tour. We thank you for coming and hope you enjoyed your stay here in the Nocturnal House!" a woman's voice carried towards the trio as they stood near the entrance.

A large group came around the corner with excited children, a few still crying from disliking the dark. But they all thanked the woman who'd guided them. She was somewhat tall with extremely long red hair that could even be seen in the dim light of the Nocturnal house. The tips were lighter, maybe blonde. She wore the uniform of the zoo, a brown shirt and jeans, but the shirt was unbuttoned revealing her snake print tank top. A few children asked if they could leave a flower at the little plaque outside. The woman nodded and pointed to a little basket with plastic flowers in it, each costing a quarter.

"Each flower helps raise money to take care of the animals but you only need one to show an animal you care," she said, knowing the parents would at least be willing to part with a quarter. Once they were gone the woman turned to see three new guests in the house. It was getting close to evening so few visitors would come by at this time. Most would head to the big animal attractions before visiting the houses.

Sam smiled as she walked up to the older woman and, what she assumed, was her grandson and granddaughter. She seemed quite friendly though the boy looked a bit pouty. This was the common sign of someone got to go where they wanted first. She'd seen it a million times. The girl obviously liked the crickets as her face was nearly pressed against the glass. "Hello! Welcome to the Nocturnal House! I'm Samael, the Head Keeper of all our little friends. Call me, Sam!" She smiled brightly, her bright green eyes more visible up close.

"Are you and your grandchildren enjoying the....." Sam stopped as she looked over at Dior. She blinked, not really recognizing what she was seeing. The girl, as she looked young, was only there from the chest up; a long ribbing spiraling down to where her torso and legs should be. Sam had seen other races before, after all Gaia was a varied place, but this was not something she'd seen before. Then something clicked in her mind as she noticed the girl's antennae and the symbol on the back of her hood. She knew that pattern, she cared for the little creatures bigger cousins.

"Is...is that a...a Raevan?" she asked a bit in wonder. Then she suddenly realized how rude she probubly seemed. "Oh! I'm so sorry! Forgive my manners its just....I've not seen another one yet."

The crowd heading out made them turn with all the noise they were making, but the woman speaking in their general direction made them pay attention.

Dior unglued her face from the glass for a brief second to greet the woman with a “Hello I’m Dior,” and resumed her cricket watching. She motioned at Rhys that they had antennas like she did and Rhys looked at his aunt and then back at the frei, nodding along.

Rowan turned her attention to the woman with a welcoming smile on her face. “Good evening Sam, I hope your day has been well. We have just arrived and I would say things are well,” she looked fondly at her charges. “We figured this could be our first stop before seeing the big cats.” She informed her a bit loud so Rhys could hear she hadn't forgotten him.

Rhys gave them a side glance and the witch gave him a knowing look. She knew he was listening.

At the mention of a raevan she turned her head curiously. “That’s quite alright! You know of another? It truly is a small world! I suppose working at this kind of place must bring in all kinds of different people.”

Rowan loosened her shawl now that they were inside safe from the cold. “By coincidence I met another in a large park of all places. It’s as if the universe helps bring them together. Although I would have loved for them to meet.”

When she looked back the two had moved a bit further down to inspect another animal.

"Oh is it closing time?" she asked noting that it was a bit deserted.

Sam was in awe of the girl. She was human in face and hands at least. She even had long gorgeous hair that had a gradient to it like her own. But she had wings and antennae like a cricket. But the symbol on her hoodie suggested a cockroach. Looking back at the woman she smiled sheepishly, "Well no actually. Dior," she'd caught the name, "is the first one I've really seen. I've met another guardian who's waiting for his like me."

She looked on as the two looked into the glass cases that lined the hallway down the north side of the building. Most of these contained insects and smaller creatures like mice, voles, and rats. Small creatures that normally were only active in the nighttime. The larger enclosures were farther along in the bend of the house. Raccoons, possums, skunks, even bats, all had larger enclosures.

"No the zoo won't close for another hour or so but it usually thins out around this time," she smiled, "But if you like I'd be more than happy to give you guys a tour even afterwards. I don't mind as I'd like to know a bit more about...ah...care...for the Raeven. If it's not too forward might I ask what essence and soul your's is from? She obviously insect in nature, her wings and antennae show me that. And the symbol on her hoodie. I see it a lot in our cockroaches."

Walking with the woman down towards the two she smiled, "If you guys have questions just let me know. Each of our animals are well cared for here. Maybe if your adult supervision doesn't mind you can help me feed a few of our residents in a bit."

“Oh!” Her face lit up once it was clear Sam was part of the program too. “Welcome to the family Sam!” She leaned in to kiss both her cheeks. “But oh let me introduce myself I am Rowan and that over there is my nephew Rhys. It’s a pleasure meeting another guardian! I’m sure you’ll be a fine guardian. If you can take care of all these animals then a child won’t be a problem,” she chuckled lightly, her eyes crinkling in amusement.

“Tail, like me?” She looked over her shoulder to get Rhys’ approval. The mice were sleeping but they were in a position against the glass where they could see their tails. Rhys shook his head.

“You don’t have a tail it’s ah uh… I don’t know a ribbon thing,” he scratched the back of his head.

“Looks like tail,” she replied glancing at it.

“It’s not a tail,” Rhys stated bluntly.

“But-“

“Not. A. Tail.”

“…okay,” she rolled her eyes and completely dismissed him focusing all her attention on the sleeping rodents.

Rhys scoffed finding himself aggravated by how she just ignored him now. He crossed his arms and rolled his eyes in the exact same manner and walked across to look at the information plaques.

Having watched the exchange with a hawk’s eye she knew exactly where the body language had come from. She was picking up nonverbal language at a fascinating speed.

This reminded of Rowan of when her children had hit that age where they repeated everything they heard and suddenly their vocabulary had increased tenfold.

“I’m glad we’re not intruding and I’m thankful for your offer,” she replied. “I’m sure they will be thrilled at a chance to feed some of these animals. My nephew loves animals just as much as I do, although I usually prefer the birds,” she let out a raspy chuckle. There was a certain charm to Sam’s straightforwardness, something Rowan could appreciate.

“Well she’s a newborn, only a few days old. It’s like a having an older baby develop much quickly,” she kept on walking slowly towards the children keeping them in her sights. “Well you’re not too far off,” Rowan was certainly surprised by the information about the hoodie. She hadn’t stared at the roach enough to have put those two together.

“I asked the universe for help and it complied by giving me a cockroach,” Rowan gave the zookeeper a wry smile. “The universe knows what’s best even if we can’t quite see why. As for essence, well a lily. A gilded lily to be exact,” she looked at Dior fondly.

“That’s enough about us, what about yourself dear?”

Now that zookeeper was close Dior took this as the chance to get a third, professional opinion.

“Mice with tail, tail like I?” She looked at her very seriously.

Sam smiled as the older woman kissed her cheeks, welcoming her into a new family of guardians. She remembered fondly when she'd first taken over the Reptile House how everyone treated her like she'd just given birth, giving her a cake and everything. Talking about her new babies. "Thank you. Oh I take care of far more than the Nocturnal House. I'm also in charge of the Reptile House. It was my main assignment until the Head Keeper of this place retired. And I knew so much about some of the residents they offered me the dual job. I don't mind it, I have a good staff who helps me ensure everyone has what they need."

So the boy was her nephew rather than a grandson. Ah well he still obviously answered to her. The girl mimicked him well, like a younger sister trying to act older. The girl wasn't wrong but she wasn't right either. A tail wasn't what the woman would call her ribbon.

"Oh not at all. I sometimes offer later tours for families who don't get to come often due to work schedule or things like that. Children should see and learn about animals. Some of our newer residents need extra care after.....well after where they came from before."

Sam didn't want to mention the illegal zoo so close to the girl, knowing she probably didn't understand human greed and selfishness. She listened to Rowan describe Dior's growth, nodding as she spoke of her youth and recent appearance. And a gilded lily? A flower with metal edges? And it was a cockroach soul! She smiled at being right.

"Well I've been working at the zoo for years. Came here after I finished my doctorate. My father is a geologist and my mom is biologist. Figured since they had the flora covered I'd care of the fauna," she grinned. "My essence, strangely enough, is a Poisoned Apple. Like from the fairy tale. And the soul I used was...."

She stopped as the girl asked her a question. Tail? She could tell the girl was serious so she walked over. She walked around the girl twice, leaning over to give her a look like a professional. Then she looked at the mice, smiling at the little sleeping rodents. "Well Dior in my professional opinion that is not a tail. You see a tail is always behind the legs. See how the mice and the rats all have tails behind their legs? Well, you don't have legs so it can't be a tail."

She crossed her arms, giving her "professional" opinion that was also simple enough for the girl to understand.

"Would you kids like to feed some of our other animals? A few of them need their evening meal."

Rowan was happy the news of Dior’s soul was not met with disgust. “Oh my I think raising a raevan will be a breeze for you!” She remarked and walked closer to them. “My those are even cute when they’re not running around the house, don’t you think so Rhys?”

The young boy grunted a response.

“A poisoned apple?” Idly she wondered what kind of raevan would be born from that. Would they be able to poison others? Rowan made note to ask about the soul later, and how she went about getting it.

“Okay,” Dior looked deflated by the answer, but accepted it. Guess ribbon it was after all.

“I told you so,” Rhys quipped. He held a smug look on his face now.

“Hmph!” She tossed her hair and crossed her arms in an attempt to mimic Rhys from the one time she witnessed him throwing a tantrum. Rowan’s eyebrows rose at that. It seemed the bad habits were being copied faster than the good ones.

It didn’t last long however and in a few moments she was moving on to the next animal. This particular display made her eyes widen.

“By the gods! Rhys look!” she beckoned him over and reluctantly he complied. In the case were a dozen or more cockroaches and they were scurrying about on top of each other.

Rhys’ face contorted to one of surprise and even he who loved worms and spiders and the like couldn’t help but to be fascinated by them.

“They’re so big!” He exclaimed.

“Need their evening meal?” Dior was ready to take Sam up on her offer alright!

Rowan was secretly glad the roach they had caught was not nearly as big as this one. They looked dangerous even.

"Do they, need their evening meal," she repeated making sure to correct her on the spot.

"Do they need their evening meal??"

“What do they eat?” She asked curiously. She figured house roached ate just about anything but did the zoo give these a special diet?

She nodded at the question of her essence, "Yes I was concerned myself but also curious. As it's from a fairy tale, something that is merely a parable to teach a moral or lesson of sorts. Yet there was something physical from the fantastical."

Sam smiled watching the two children look into the cases. She'd always enjoyed the looks of wonder and amazement on their faces as they observed a new creature. Her parents encouraged curiosity, telling her it was the only way to truly learn. If she was never curious then she would never remember what she learned. It took passion to remember and curiosity was a driving force for that passion.

Looking at the creatures she smiled, "These are Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Some of the biggest cockroaches alive today." She was going into Keeper mode, "They aren't like the cockroaches you will find here in the city or in a house. They are bigger and actually don't have wings. But as you can see, they are excellent climbers." She pointed at some that were crawling up the very glass in front of them.

"Sure we can feed them. They are vegetarians actually. We give them nice fresh veggies and some little pellets that give them protein. They are quite easy to take care of. Come on, follow me."

Sam lead the trio towards what looked like a wall, but with a push of a button a keyhole appeared. Putting in her key she opened the door and ushered them in behind the scenes. It wasn't much brighter here, the animals preferring darker areas even during treatment and feeding. There were several other keepers in the main area, all busy feeding or preparing feed. "Ladies and gentlemen we have guests who wish to help us feed tonight. Do try to make them feel comfortable."

The four keepers, two men and two women, smiled at the trio. They were use to their Head Keeper bringing in guests to feed. It helped in ways, showing that the Zoo truly cared about the health and well being of their charges. Sam motioned one woman over to Rowan. The woman walked over to Rowan with what looked like a swaddled baby. A small black furry head peeked out with large eyes and squeaked at the older woman, it was a young flying fox, a species of bat.

"That is Lee, one of our new arrivals. He's a fruit bat. I know you said you preferred birds but, they fly," Sam said as she handed Rowan a piece of banana. The little bat got very excited at the sight of the fruit.

Sam then took Dior and Rhys over to a large wall where she pushed back a flap to reveal the cockroaches. A soft hissing could be heard. She gave the two a bowl of veggies and protein pellets which looked a lot like dry dog food. "Just place it in and around their enclosure. They like to forage."

She went to check on a few other charges before returning to the two. "Come on, there are two special animals that need a tender touch."

Sam walked to the two men who were also holding bundled animals but these were larger. One was a raccoon, he had a cast on his arm and seemed to be missing fur in several places. Even his tail, which hung out of the blanket, was missing fur giving him a rat like appearance. The other man had a mink, a weasel like animal, that was currently crawling in and out of it's blanket. It also showed signs of scars and fur loss.

The poisoned apple?” She wondered at that. Of course she knew the fairy tale she just didn’t think someone could actually have it. Then again gilded flowers were not supposed to literal so it wasn’t too hard to swallow.

When the bat was held in front of her Rowan couldn’t help to coo at it. She had never seen one so close an admittedly it resembled a canine.

“Oh aren’t you a darling?” She took the banana offered and peeled it back. The witch’s smiled widened as the bat started to nibble at the banana. It had quite the appetite!

Dior and Rhys exchanged a mutual excited look. For once they were on the same page. The frei wasted no time in waving at the other keepers and floating around them and past the flaps to find the cockroach spot. She swooped down to run her index finger on the top of theirs shells.

Rhys did as he was told and placed the food around the corners to watch them search and be rewarded. Dior on the other hand spoiled them by simply holding the pellets in her hands and having them come up to get it.

She raised her hand to show Rhys she held one and petted the insect. Perhaps a bit too hard since it let out a buzzing sound that had them both startled.

“You’re hurting it put it down,” he told her urging her to toss it back in with the bunch. Nevermind they had been hissing for a while now.

“Home,” she replied holding the roach close to her. She tickled its antennas and waved her own to mimic it.

“You can’t take it home, come on,” he was at the entrance of the flaps wanting to see what other animals Sam was going to show them. He hadn’t been this close to exotic ones before and wasn’t about to miss out because the raevan killed one of them.

“Why?”

“Because I said so now come on.”

Dior pursed her lips and sighed, setting the roach back in with the bunch. She looked at Rhys, smiled and started to float over to him. The minute he was on the other side she turned around and beckoned the insect into her sleeve.

As if it understood, or perhaps thinking there was food in there, the cockroach skittered up her arm. She floated past the flaps and towards the mysterious bundles, adjusting her hoodie now and then. It tickled.

Once the bat was done with the banana Rowan thanked the woman and came up to meet the others. She was glad those two had come to a truce of sorts and she watched the expressions on their faces as they approached the wounded animals.

“What happened to them?” Rhys asked motioning towards the bald spots. “Did they fall in a trap?” He approached the weasel and started to pet its head gently.

Dior came closer to the raccon and examined its tail. It was bald, but its body was furry… well kind of since it was missing some. “Mouse?” It was awfully big and long for one. She mimicked her brother and started to pet its head too.

Sam didn't notice anything naughty going on with the cockroaches. Most likely she wouldn't notice a missing one until days later given their propensity to hide in their habitat. She smiled as the two came over to the injured animals, glad they were curious.

The weasel squeaked at Rhys petting, grabbing his hand with it's smaller ones and sniffing all over it. It even licked his fingers a bit before burrowing again in it's blankets. Sam smiled a bit sadly as the boy asked about the injuries and the girl pointed out the lack of fur on the raccoon.

"No my dear," she said to Dior, "This is a raccoon. But it's missing her pretty fur on her tail." Looking to the boy she shook her head, "No unfortunately these animals were taken from an illegal zoo. Greedy people make them, force the animals to live in tiny cages they don't clean and don't feed them properly. They don't take care of them like we do here."

She took a seat next to the man with the weasel and took the blanket. The weasel, smelling a familiar woman, popped it's head out and crawled onto her chest. She petted it with a smile. "This is Romeo, as he likes to flirt. He was forced to fight snakes for entertainment in the bad zoo. Hence his scars. And because he wasn't taken care of, he had mange. Its a skin disease, makes their hair fall out. But he's doing much better and his fur is growing back well."

Looking over at Dior, "Maiden there had mange too. But her sickness was much worse than Romeo. She lost a lot of her fur and was very sick. She's just now getting her appetite back."

The men began showing the kids how to feed the animals. The mink got little bits of raw hamburger, the man explaining to Rhys that they put vitamins and other good things in the hamburger so Romeo could get strong and healthy. Sam showed Dior how Maiden, the raccoon, always needed to wash her food in a little water dish before she ate. "We don't know why they do it, but they do with anything they eat. Always have to give it a wash."

Going back to stand with Rowan as the children fed the animals she looked to the woman and spoke softly so the children wouldn't hear. "You saw the plaque outside the house. Hurtz was another animal taken from the zoo. He was one of the worst. They would constantly antagonize him to make him lift his tail even though he was de-scented. He had severe behavior problems, didn't trust anyone. We.....we recently had to put him down. He wouldn't integrate with the other skunks."

She looked at Rowan with a small glint in her eye, "But I made sure he wouldn't leave this world in vain. And that he'd move on to a happier life."

Rowan watched the children pet the animals tenderly. She smiled at Dior, so new to this world and already learning empathy. She leaned in to hear what Sam was telling her, grateful that Rhys and Dior did not have to hear that part although some of it was expressed on the plaque they came across.

“That’s terrible. How can anyone do such thing,” she shook her head and waved a few loose hairs out of her face. “There comes a point the abuse is so bad they can’t ever trust anymore. At least with these two things are looking up. I’m glad they were rescued before that turning point,” her eyes softened. “I’m glad you were there to make his last moment painless. And to give him some comfort too, at least.”

Looking at the way Sam had looked at her made her wonder if perhaps the happier life included reincarnation. “Aha! So that settles the mystery. I’m happy you didn’t have to sacrifice anything in the name of science. I have no doubt you will be a fantastic owner Samael and should you ever need help don’t hesitate to call me. Granted we only have a landline but if it’s not me, Rhys can answer.”

“Poor weasel!” Rhys remarked still petting it. The weasel inspected his hand and licked it much to Rhys’s delight. “I’m sure they have a better life here. Will they get returned to the wild?” He offered the weasel bits of hamburger meat and petted it with his other hand.

Dior watched with fascination the raccoon’s eating ritual. She didn’t quite understand their hardships but they were here now recovering and that’s all that mattered for the time being.

“Mange… a skin disease that makes hair fall out,” she parroted telling the raccoon what had happened to her. “Eat to grow into a big healthy raccoon girl,” she continued looking at it straight in the eye.

“I have something for them, Sam, if you don’t mind,” Rowan dug around her purse until she found the smooth quartz stone. “I would like you to have this, for these animals. It’s a quartz stone and it’s like the all-purpose crystal in the rock world. I have enchanted this one to increase its qualities one of which include healing. You can leave it in a room and it’ll do its work. I hear animals are quite sensitive to these sorts of energies and I hope it does them some good.”

"Sounds like good spirits to me!" a deep voice came from behind the group. Sam turned with a smile, knowing that baritone. The man was tall, broad chested, and ebony skinned. He had a warm smile on his face that seemed to light up the room with happiness. While he was bald he had a bandana tied around around his forehead. Around his neck was a necklace decorated with small animal teeth and stones.

"Tau! Good to have you back! How's your mother doing?" she said as a very large black man came up and hugged the woman.

"Good to be back. Mama does fine now. Spirits gave her some strength and she smiles all day now. Though from what I hear, no smiles are in the House right now." He put a large hand on Sam's shoulder, knowing his boss must have taken the death of the skunk hard.

"Smiles will come back. They always do," she said softly before turning to Rowan and the children, "Kids this is Tau, my second in command. He's been out taking care of family," she looked to Rowan, "And is a very spiritual man."

"Spirits all around us, Sam. Every day," Tau nodded and walked to Rowan. He reverently took the stone. "Thank you for your blessing Good Elder. The animals will feel its good aura, I am sure!"

Sam smiled again, glad to have Tau back. Going back to the children she looked to Rhys, "Sadly no. Neither of these two animals can ever be released into the wild because they don't know how to be wild animals. They've always been around humans so they will remain here or to go other zoos who might need them." She smiled at Dior, "Oh she will eat well. Now that her skin is less itchy she has more time to eat." She thought for a moment then nodded, "I'll be right back."

As Sam disappeared for a few minutes Tau went about looking for the right place to put the stone, finding it close to the sleeping cages. "There. Put good spirits here so when animals sleep, good healing to make them strong." He looked at Dior, noticing her unusual appearance. "You look like a good spirit. Bright and golden like the sun which gives life."

"Oh she's golden alright. I'll explain later. Here you go kids," Sam said as she returned with some things in her arms. To Dior she handed a picture book made by the zoo that showed all their animals. Above the picture was the animal's name and underneath each picture was what animal it was. This way children could identify the animals in the zoo. To Rhys she gave several pamphlets and small booklets on several of the animals in the Nocturnal House, including the Mink weasel and the raccoon. She made sure to include some of the insects as well. It gave normal science information on the animal but also included cultural information. "Here, to help you learn about our friends here. These pamphlets tell about the animal and tell you what the animal means in certain cultures. The mythology of them."

"Every animal is a brother or sister in the world, children," Tau said, "Each was made for a reason and is blessed with power. There is no animal here in our world that does not have a connection to the spirits. Always remember that." He grinned and ruffled Rhys hair with a large hand and gentle patted Dior's, careful of her antennae.

“It’s a pleasure meeting you Tau, I am Rowan and I wish I had brought more for your mother,” Rowan gave him the same greeting she gave Sam. She adjusted her shawl and turned to the children. The witch could appreciate the man’s calm demeanor and she could feel the kind spirits that guided him.

“This one is Dior and this one over here is Rhys,” she clasped his shoulders and Rhys looked up. “You’re quite welcome! It seems the kids are quite taken with them. A valuable lesson you’ve helped to teach.”

“Oh! We will be back to visit them, right auntie?” Rhys looked at her with pleading eyes.

“Oh certainly,” she replied. How could she resist those eyes? Besides any opportunity to spend with nature and the animals was a good one.

Dior beamed at the compliment. “I’m a good spirit like the sun,” she tasted the words and found them to her liking. She took the book and started to inspect it turning it every which way and that.

“What do you say?” Rowan looked at them expectantly.

“Thank you,” Rhys complied somewhat distracted looking over the pamphlets.

“Thank you,” Dior echoed while she too flipped over the pages. she stopped briefly before turning the page. She was sure Tau’s words held a deep significance to them but it would be a while before she would think over them. She wiggled her antennas.

“Can we go feed the tigers now?”

Briefly Rowan looked at her watch. The last hour had been spent in the Nocturnal House surely the Den would be closed by now.

“Tigers need sleep too you know. And it will be your bedtime soon. We can come back another time I’m sure the tigers are not going anywhere.”

"But you said..."

Rowan let out a defeated sigh.

"Alright alright!" She gave him a comforting pat on the head. "I won't go back on my word. I hope it's not too far?" She switched her attention to the zookeepers and started to zip up for the cold temperatures.

Sam grinned as the children began looking over the things she'd given them. In the day of modern technology it was nice to see children enjoying books and things on paper.

The boy seemed quite taken with going to see the tigers, which made her smile. "Tigers it is. You've been quite helpful so I'll take you there myself. They've already been fed but you can still see them. I know two of them like to come out towards twilight and hunt around the toys we set out for them."

Sam ensured the others were fine then she and Tau walked the trio out into the zoo. It was quieter though the cry of birds and other animals could still be heard.

"Look there, Rhys. You see that big bird there?" the large man pointed to a large bird with black tipped feathers, "That is the Egyptian Vulture. In Egypt, where my family comes from, it is a sacred bird of the great Goddess Isis. It is considered a royal bird."

The man continued to point out other animals along the way, giving the children information about them and their cultural significance. Finally they reached the tiger enclosure. But no cats were visible.

"Oh playing hide and seek are we?" Sam grinned then put her hands to her mouth. She made a strange sound, the call of an small buffalo. They waited, then she pointed. "There's one of them now. Mila, the bengal tiger." In the grass, barely visible, a pair of eyes watched them. "Her brother Fernando should be around here somewhe.."

She was cut off as the male suddenly jumped down from a rock and tackled his sister. With a roar she swatted him and he ran of with what had to be the tiger equivalent of a giggle.

"Ah little brother gonna get it if he mess with big sister,"
Tau laughed.

Sam let the kids see the tigers play with their ball, and occasionally bicker with each other, before announcing she needed to see them to the gates. It was getting late and everyone had to clean up for the day. She took a different route to the gate, so the kids could walk by and see the elephants walking along and the giraffes heading in for a good night's sleep.

"I'm glad you guys came. It was really wonderful to meet a Raevan and I can't wait for my to arrive."
She looked to Dior, "Hopefully you can be a friend to him."

Rhys had forgotten all about the squabble from the past few days by now. Rowan took their books and pamphlets and placed it in her purse. Knowing them they would accidentally leave them, distracted by an animal and completely forget about them.

“Tigers?” Dior grabbed Rowan’s hand as they walked along the trail. She rolled her shoulder trying to get the roach to a different spot, but to any others it might have looked as if she were loosening tension there.

“They’re beautiful big cats. You’ll seen soon enough,” Rowan looked around to find the Egyptian Vulture take off. “Now there’s a welcoming name. Perhaps one day you’ll tell us all about these Egyptian gods. I’m sure we would all be thrilled to hear it from the source, as they say,” she smiled warmly at the man.

Rhys practically ran up to perimeter and held his breath, waiting for the tigers to come out. He looked over his shoulder when Sam released her call and by the time he looked back he could see one! A tiny bit of light was enough to reflect its eyes, otherwise he would have missed it.

“They’re so big!” Bigger than what he saw on Animal Planet. Seeing them live definitely put their size into perspective. He gasped as the tigers started to play with each other, fearing they would hurt themselves.

"Like spirits of the night!"
Dior remarked, enthralled by their appearances.

"They're not spirits they're real. And they're not nocturnal either!" Quipped Rhys. Dior stared at him for a solid second before she shrugged.

By now the temperature had dropped to an uncomfortable chill and Rowan was starting to feel it in her bones. Rhys did not protest when she suggested it was time to go back home.

Dior had zipped up her hoodie so that only her eyes could be seen and stuffed her hands in her pockets. She had stared at the giraffes the longest, finding them intimidating and their long necks quite bizarre.

“Thank you so much for the tour Sam, and you too Tau. It was a pleasure meeting both of you,” she summoned a card from her purse and gave it to Sam. “This is our shop in Barton Town. Should you ever need incense or candles for your gods Tau, I could have someone send them right over. But more importantly it’s where we live and where you will find us should you need anything at all. I hope once your raevan comes into this world that you will visit or we can come visit you. Dior could use playmates of her own kind, since Rhys will be starting school soon.”

She gave them her farewell on each cheek and with that she ushered the two kids into the last taxi in the circle. She turned back to wave at them.

“Byyyeee see you soon!”

“Bye!”
