Switched at birth with the heir of the Ashworth estate, Oliver had none of his half-brother's fancy education. He was raised to be a sailor, following his father on and off the Amaranta, a merchant ship owned by Artur Sandrino. Ollie learned to tie a proper knot before he learned to look both ways before crossing the street, and spent many of his childhood days at the docks with his younger brother, befriending all manner of ragamuffins and traders and foreigners without discrimination.
When they were old enough to be cabin boys, Ollie and his brother were brought aboard on occasional voyages until it became routine. Eventually both grew into their expected roles as part of the crew. They spent the next years sailing with their father, the chief mate aboard the Amaranta.
Although their father did not share their enthusiasm, both boys were devoted to their mother and made point of surprising her at home whenever the ship docked in Palisade.
A sudden urge drove Ollie to beg leave of the ship for one voyage while he traveled to Oldcastle. Having never left the water for more than several days, he was baffled by the sudden desire to take the long and arduous ride down to Oldcastle (on a horse, no less). Once there, it only seemed natural that he ride into the Wardwood. He emerged days later with a curious deer-shaped totem. He is now back aboard the Amaranta, wondering what all is happening.
Oliver is a sailor's son through and through, happy as long as there is a deck beneath his feet, rum a-plenty in the hold and crass men all around to share in the simple joy of being on a boat. He has a devil-may-care attitude about practically everything and is known for his tendency to stare danger in the eye and not think twice. He has always been something of a wild child and is prone to pulling stunts that could easily result in a broken neck.
But having few worldly possessions, he has little to risk and no responsibilities, which is the way he prefers it. Ollie has zero ambitions toward captaincy and is completely happy with being pointed toward a task and doing it.
Ollie is anything but vain. He takes little enough care of his appearance (although somehow his hair still seems to end up absolutely perfect, no matter what he does or does not do) and has no qualms against chatting up a stranger. The world entire is his best friend, and no moment around Ollie is an awkward one. He delights in conversation and will happily sit with anybody, drinking into the depths of night.

Taxes was born with sea legs. Her first moments were spent aboard a ship and since then, few have been spent off one. Just as her Chosen is a sailor's son through and through, so Taxes is a sailor's Guardian to the core. Her responsibility to Ollie is not to right his wrongs or to keep him grounded, but to be his constant companion and to be there for him, supporting his smart choices and egging him on in dumb ones. Taxes is nothing if not loyal, and has very much become Ollie's indispensable sidekick. She will readily haul him back to his cabin when he has had too much to drink, and will just as eagerly sniff out cheats in games of Liar's Dice. Taxes has never failed to come through for her Chosen, and when asked why he chose her name, Ollie will inevitably say that it is because "Nothing in life is certain 'cept death and Taxes."
She is a deceptively tough little thing, having grown up around sailors, and is quick to lash with her hooves when provoked. She has few qualms about putting people in their place no matter how big they are, and has some trouble distinguishing between real baddies and men who simply put on a rough front. On more than one occasion, she has required rescue before a thug retaliated. She never aims for real, physical damage, but just like the sailors who have come to embrace her as part of the family, Taxes lacks certain social graces and can play a little too rough with humans and other Guardians alike.
