It had finally happened. He'd been both dreading and looking forward to this meeting. Jack had seemed like such a genuine guy when they'd met at the Masquerade that a chance to drink with him had filled Desmond with a sense of courage that maybe he could make some new friends.

But at the same time, he wished he was back in his smithy sipping a cup of tea and reading a book. Even at the mere thought, his beautiful Guardian headbutted him from behind before stepping up beside him, looking down her nose at him with a scornful snort. She didn't like how introverted he was, and constantly rebuked him for his lack of courage. In fact, he probably wouldn't have left his smithy if not for her practically shoving him out the door.

"Liadain, please. I'm here, aren't I?" he asked, gesturing to the patrons around him. The bar was rather lively, unlike some of the places he'd been to recently. It looked as if a show was about to start; beautifully dressed women stood on the stage as if waiting for a cue to start a dance or something. He found himself staring at them, hearing Liadain's snort as she pushed past him to make her way to an empty table by the fireplace.

"Now to just find Jack..."

Jack nearly stumbled through the door, Aster crowding close behind him like an over-grown pup. His loud, lighthearted laughter drew they eyes of those nearest the door. No, the soldier was not drunk before even reaching the pub, though it may well look like it. Rather, he and his Guardian had been up to a bit of mischief, barely escaping without being caught. Running with Astrophel was like being a child all over again...except he was not certain that even Kit had led him into as much mischief as the Guardian was wont to do. Or perhaps he had, and it was simply a different sort of fun.

"The look on his face!" he crowed, earning a laughing snort from the buck. He slung an arm over the Guardian's neck and took a moment to catch his breath before scanning the room.

Ah. Just there. He waved at a serving woman - she knew what he liked - and made his way over to the little table by the fireplace. He was practically buzzing with the strength of his mirth, but Jack had managed to subdue himself enough as not to be sniggering anymore. "Desmond!" he cried, clasping his friend's arm. "So glad you could make it. I do hope you don't plan to hide away over here all night."

Releasing the man, he spotted a certain doe and offered her a flamboyant bow. "Milady Liadain." He straightened only to sprawl in the chair closest to him.

"Y'know, lassie, I'm worried about 'im," Ollie declared as he pushed open the tavern door and filed in behind several other men. "He spends plenty o' time pining, though as I sees it, he isn't prepared to admit any o' that. An' all because he's up to his ears in women problems." He let out a mirthful laugh and let the door swing shut behind him.

At his side was a determined-looking doe the color of champagne with softly glowing eyes. She paused beside her Chosen for a moment, surveying the other patrons before zeroing in on the bar and promptly bulling her way forward. She, of course, had her priorities straight even if Ollie's brother did not, and she knew that drinks were top priority right now. Or, really, at all times.

Ollie followed her all to willingly, apologizing heartily to anyone Taxes managed to bowl over. After hauling a disgruntled looking man off the floor, he headed after her to the bar. As bright as she was, the doe was hard to lose even in the crowd of people.

Halfway there, Taxes suddenly altered her course. She had spotted something even more impressive than drinks: Guardians and drinks. Chalking this discovery up as a double win, the doe nudged several patrons unceremoniously out of her way to sidle nonchalantly up to the table and settle herself near the other two Guardians as if she had every business being there.

Ollie arrived shortly after, took stock of the situation in a blink, and plastered a bright, winning smile onto his face. New acquaintances; excellent! "Ev'ning, sirs," he began, as if he saw no problem in potentially interrupting a private conversation. "Hope it's not too much trouble my lassie here tried to join yer party."

Desmond rubbed the back of his neck as he took a drink from the mug that had been left on the table. "Well, I....kind of...was," he said, voice drifting away into inaudibility on the last word. Before he could open his mouth to say anything else, Liadain snorted at him for attempting to interrupt and turned her head towards Jack. She liked this man and his buck; Astrophel had played with her during the Masquerade when she had been so much smaller. Her ears flickered happily and she leaned forward to nibble on Jack's sleeve before she turned her attention to Astrophel. Desmond frowned when she actually rose to her feet to go great the buck.

"She's happier to see you two then she is to see me most days," he remarked, offering his rough hand to shake the other man's. "Good to see you again, sir. I was starting to think this, uh, meeting would never happen." He waved a hand at the barmaid and she came over with more mugs, setting one before Jack with a shy smile and flirtatious eyes.

"How have you been since the Masque?" he asked, but moments later, something caught his attention and he stared past Jack at the pale, almost ethereal doe heading right for their table, a rather large, jolly looking man in tow with a greeting already on his lips.

"Uh, good evening to you, sir! It's...no trouble...at all..." He stared in disbelief as the pale doe went right up to one of the mugs and began drinking the liquid within with gusto. "Um...Well then."

Jack cheerfully ignored Desmond's feeble attempt to state his intent to refrain from mingling and instead favored the barmaid with a roguish smile and a wink. "Perhaps we are simply a rarer treat," he suggested as he shook the other man's hand. It was not uncommon for partners to take each other for granted, even for Guardians and Chosen.

Jack's mug, being in his hand, was safe from the audacious doe's reach, but even if it had been his own, it was very likely that he would have exhibited an equal amount of nonchalance. Indeed, it looked as though he saw such things every day - of course, being in the Queen's Cavalry, who was to say he did not?

"Good evening," Jack said. "Why don't you both join us?" The offer was genuine. The captain was a friendly man by nature, and this stranger seemed a pleasant fellow.

Astrophel, for his part, had affectionately snuffled Liadan's cheek. When this new lady arrived, he wagged his fluffy tail and sniffed curiously at her. Whatever he found, he seemed inordinately pleased with himself.

"S'kind of you to ask. Don't mind if I do," Ollie said readily, scooting into an empty chair while casually pulling the mug out from under Taxes' nose with some protest from the doe. "Two more o' these if y'please," he told the barmaid, one for himself and one to replace the one that Taxes had all but inhaled.

"S'what you get, raising a Guardian on a ship with nobody but sailors to keep 'er company," he added with a grin when he noticed the expression on Desmond's face. "Takes right to a good drink, she does, and I'll be damned if she doesn't like the expensive stuff. Made off with a bottle o' champagne once, she did, right under the cap'n nose!" An appreciative laugh bubbled up and Ollie gave Taxes an affectionate scratch as she nosed at his elbow. The filched champagne had not gone entirely to the doe of course, which was perhaps why Ollie was so quick to forgive the theft. Much of the crew had taken it in turns, though many had decided that they preferred rum. But none of the men could say that they hadn't appreciated the opportunity to try something so far above their class.

"Ollie," he added, as if suddenly remembering his manners. "Ollie Tiller."

Despite the odd Guardian's behaviour, Desmond smiled at the jolly fellow and extended his hand for a shake. "Nice to meet you, Ollie." Liadain had already nosed her way back over to the table, curiosity pointing her ears forward. She eyed Ollie from his toes to the top of his head before flicking a single ear backwards and forwards again in approval. She then dipped her head to sniff at the slightly smaller Taxes and made a chuffing noise in greeting.

Desmond rolled his eyes at his extremely forward Guardian, feeling color rise to his cheeks. "Liadain, be a little more respectful of their space," he said softly, holding his hand out to her. She snorted at him but went to his outstretched fingers anyway so that she could lean into his touch. "Sorry for that. She's very straightforward."

"Jack Blackthorn," he replied, shaking the man's hand and naming each of his companions in turn - Guardians and all. "She's just a friendly lady, is all," he said, no more perturbed by Liadan's behavior than he had been by Taxes'. Of course, it wasn't his person space that was being invaded.

"You know, I once knew a horse with a fondness for whiskey. It was all well and good until he got hold of a barrel full overnight. Could barely walk straight the next morning and then he fell asleep in the middle of maneuvers. His rider, poor sod, couldn't wake the beast up and had to wait there for hours while he slept it off. He'll never live that down."

If the story was true, who could say? But it certainly sounded genuine coming from Jack.

"Well said, sir," Ollie said brightly to Jack. His own Guardian was quite the friendly lady as well, with very few mannerisms that would get her labeled a "lady" at all. "We're not used to personal space, in any case," he added with a grin as Taxes emerged from behind him and promptly nosed curiously as Liadain's retreating back. She had always been a rough-and-tumble little thing, which had landed her in several spots of trouble before, but as she had escaped each incident none the worse for wear (at times thanks to timely rescue from her Chosen), she didn't seem to have learned any lessons whatsoever.

The drinks arrived and the sailor promptly snatched one toward him, draining a third of its contents in one breath. "Now that's a horse I could sympathize with," he declared, setting down the mug for the moment. The hearty grin on his face hinted at an understanding that the story may or may not be genuine, but Ollie seemed content to roll with it, no matter what. He had his own such stories, after all.

"One year, we sailed out of Geric across the sea with our hold stocked for two voyages," - with rum, of course - "when we found halfway to Dor that we'd be dry halfway home. Course, the cap'n weren't too pleased about that, threatened to have us all grounded for filching. Then we realized we'd picked up a stowaway monkey in Geric, and he could outdrink all o' us, the devil." He paused for a drink. "Course, we put into port at Northport an' off this monkey shoots to hide behind a certain Madame Rosa's skirts. Beat us all in drink and women, he did!"

Desmond couldn't help but laugh, even if he didn't believe Jack's story for an instant. His fellow soldiers had always bandied about drinking stories when off-duty, and he'd heard some fine ones indeed.

When Taxes nudged her in the back, Liadain gave her Chosen such a triumphant, haughty look that one would think she'd just won a medal of some kind. Whipping around, the pale, gray-touched doe sniffed at Taxes before wiggling her tail and bounding away across the floor, a clear invitation for play.

Ollie's story had him chuckling as well, and for the first time in quite a long time, Desmond felt relaxed. He lifted his mug and sat back a little more loosely in his chair. "You know, you'd think people would be a little more perturbed by very large deer running past them in a tavern, but these folks seem to be taking it quite well."

Until they break something.

Jack grinned at Ollie's story. Veracity was moot. When exchanging drinking stories, it was only good manners to take 'em as they were. "Beast or man, any lad as can hold his rum is popular with the ladies. Even Mister Brown, though I've yet to understand that one. Ugly as sin, Mister Brown, and speaks so rarely he may as well be mute, but he does attract a certain kind of lady."

Not one to be left out of fun, Aster bounced after Liadain with a frisky snort.

The soldier shook his head at Desmond. "A lot of Chosen come here, the lads as drink here are accustomed to Guardians running about."

Ollie chuckled. "And don't they know it, too," he said, grinning because he himself had had enough experiences with drinks and women to know that Jack was right.

The sailor watched as the three Guardians wove their wave strategically between the chairs and tables, earning themselves a few looks but going largely unbothered. Within moments, there was a short scream of surprise as Taxes, as though reading Desmond's mind, swung her hindquarters too far out of a turn and sent the glass flying out of a carefully-dressed woman's hands.

Uh-oh, Ollie thought with amusement as Taxes gleefully projected to him an image of the woman's recovering look of shock and scampered on her way. "Sorry!" He called out above the din, but then a thoughtful look crossed his face and he looked at his two companions. "Well lookit, lads, as fine gen'lemen, we ought t'go apologize to the lady face t'face." He gave them both a conspiratorial wink and pushed his chair back.

Desmond choked on the drink he had just taken. "W-w-what?" he sputtered, setting the mug down and pounding a fist into his chest. "L-lady? What lady? Why do we all have to go?"

There was something Desmond had never really...mentioned to anyone before. Aside from the wolves, there was only one other thing Desmond truly feared.

Women.

Especially women like Soibhan, who had absolutely confused and horrified him when she'd first visited his smithy. The wild woman was nothing like any of the ladies he'd seen about Palisade, and that bothered him. To the half-blind soldier, a woman should be a delicate creature, covered in lace and flowers and doted upon with the most tenderest of care.

Just don't ask him to do the doting, because he was more liable to trip over their trailing dresses and make a right fool of himself.

He kept his butt firmly in his chair and waved the other men away. "You go on without me. I'll...keep our table safe!"

Jack shared Ollie's grin and pushed back his own chair. Some ladies might be intimidated by a pack of men converging on her regardless of their intentions, but this one looked to be made of sterner stuff. As such, he had no qualms about joining Ollie.

"Nonsense," he told Desmond, brushing aside the protest as he slung an arm around the reluctant man's shoulders and all but dragged him out of his chair. "It's only good manners. You wouldn't want to disappoint a lady, would you?" Besides, he had promised to show Desmond a good time. Part of that was a good flirtation.

"We all have to go because it's the right thing to do," Ollie agreed as Desmond as hoisted out of his seat by Jack. He snatched his mug off the table and stuffed another into Desmond's hand. "If it will help," he said, winking.

Heading the trio, Ollie wove his way across the tavern toward the woman in question, who had by now realized they were approaching and was watching them with a gleam of expectant interest in her eyes. They were an odd trio, after all.

"Ev'ning, miss," Ollie greeted her with a smile and a gracious nod. "Ollie. I came to apologize for me lassie knocking that drink from your hands. This is Jack. An' Desmond here, well he came t'buy you a new drink for the one you lost." If Ollie noticed Desmond's horror, he chose adamantly to ignore it.
