Given Name» Rou 潦 / Rou-Shou 潦小 Elemental Name» Water Lucidity» Would have been considered Dreaming in the Empire
Birthdate» 7-2, t710 Birthplace» Kokoku; his exact birthplace is unknown.
Age» 10 Height» 4'8" Character» Emotional Talent» Water Divination Aspiration» Sorcerer
Sun Sign» the Maiden (Gentle, passive, loving, shy, cracks easily under pressure.) Moon Sign» the Philosophers (Sociable, quick-witted, curious, with a complex inner life.)
Mother» Unknown Father» Jua, Dreaming Fire; Adoptive Father - Wood Sorcerer Spouse» None.
Likes» Water (rain, streams, dew, mist, clear pools,) beautiful and gentle wild creatures, clean air, peaceful relations
Dislikes» Dry and stale air, arguments, commerce, having heavy expectations placed upon him
Interests» Studying Sorcerous magic and the life cycles of forest animals, collecting eggshells
Health issues» Difficulty digesting gluten
Romantic Inclinations» So far in the closet that he's in Narnia.
Personality» For a wild boy who survives in the mountains, scrabbling up trees with his bare friends and eating nuts, berries, and fish to survive, Rou is rather sensitive and cerebral. He lives not through his physical senses and not through logic but through his feelings -- the landscape of his mind is made up of emotions and impressions. Rou-Dai says of his apprentice that thoughts and feelings move across his brain like rolling waves, beginning slowly but reaching a tremendous rate and capacity at their peak. Rou is thus quite intelligent, but he approaches problems in a strange, sideways way.
This way of thinking is especially suited to making unusual insights and figuring things out intuitively. When combined with magic, this enables him to perform divinations; in everyday life, this allows him to quickly decipher the underlying truth of a situation or the hidden feelings of others. And, though he is somewhat shy and hesitant around strangers, he uses this talent to comfort and care for those he has come to trust. Though he does not like to be center of attention, he feels very happy when surrounded by friends, just listening in on a peaceful intellectual conversation or communal philosophical musings.

Rou -- he was not called Rou back then -- was born, of the blood of a woman who lived in a town on the north coast of Kokoku and the water of one of the island's many wandering Sorcerers, who though he rambled the wilderness most of his life would return periodically to the house of his wife. Rou's mother was fine with this until one day, which Rou barely allows himself to remember, when she was suddenly overcome with pain and panic and lay in the house sobbing, failing to feed herself or her son. Then, one night, when the neighbors were not paying attention, she took the little boy's hand in hers and walked with him on the path to the forest, continuing until the light of dawn began to barely filter in through the trees, dragging her exhausted child along, through the downpour that began, through the puddles impeding them, and then, unable to walk any more, lay down in the mud, under the faint rainbows the morning sun made in the sprays of water, and quietly died.
Fortunately for the weak and terrified child, a Wood Sorcerer, going by the name Jua, stumbled upon the woman a few moments after she died. Seeing the Sorcerous love-trinket she had tangled in her fingers, he thought upon the situation a moment, then scooped up the little boy in his arms, resolving that this child, though he had lost the Sorcerer who fathered him by nature, would still have a Sorcerer father, one who would father him by nuture. Thus the two-year-old was renamed Rou, downpour; blocking out these traumatic memories, the boy grew up entirely in the tradition of the Sorcerers of Kokoku.
For seven years after that, Rou followed Jua, learning skills for surviving in the mountains, the medicinal use of herbs and animal products, and listening to the rhythm of the trees and the rivers. They would go down to the towns occasionally, to barter for clothes and tools or to perform shamanic healing or divination for the civilized folk, but Rou disliked their disapproving stares and the oppressive geometry of their houses; he preferred the wild irregularities of the crags, ancient gnarled branches, and gently rolling water.
It was for water in particular that Rou for which had an affinity, and so it was that when Rou was nine (though Jua and Rou couldn't be sure themselves,) Jua asked him if he might like to apprentice to a Water Sorcerer -- for the Sorcerers do not receive their Elemental Name from any Temple but learn of it from others and then claim it themselves. Rou was uncertain... until one day, at a sabbath, he happened to meet a mature Sorcerer whose parents were from Houkoku, an exotic light-haired man with flashing eyes and movements like graceful ripples, but a kind, gentle, nurturing demeanor. This Water Sorcerer, also named Rou, received the younger Rou (now called Rou-Shou, "Rou-Small") as his apprentice.
Rou-Dai and Rou-Shou spent a year together, plumbing the mysteries of Water; Rou-Shou's intuitive abilities were developed into water divination, and the two Sorcerers even called down the spirits once or twice. Furthermore, Rou-Shou felt himself blossoming from boy into man, nourished by the encouragement of Rou-Dai, yes, but especially by his admiring gaze and gentle smiles. Of course Rou-Shou had loved his father, Jua, but his love for Rou-Dai was something rather different; the idea of his apprenticeship ending, of leaving his sunlight-haired master behind, came to appear more and more unpalatable to him as the days passed.
However, another would cross their path in the year the townspeople called Toutei 720; a slightly older boy rescued from drowning in a late winter storm by Rou-Dai walking on the choppy ocean water. Even as Rou-Shou helped his master nurse him, his intuition began to give him fearful feelings, and his stomach knotted itself when he watched Rou-Dai's long, pretty fingers rubbing the other boy's cold limbs. The one they rescued turned out to be the apprentice of a different Water Sorcerer; the apprentice, named In, soon decided to part with his old master and become Rou-Dai's second apprentice. Unlike Rou-Shou, In was skilled at active magic and could hear the voices of spirits much more clearly than the younger boy; as Rou-Dai nurtured In's abilities, Rou-Shou began to feel more and more panic -- though his master had never scolded him, never asked him to become more than what "his beautiful self" already was, it seemed that he still could not compare to this other, far more skilled apprentice... skilled in magic and forceful in personality, unlike Rou-Shou, and unafraid to declare and pursue his desires...

Rou had dawdled that afternoon collecting shells on the rocky beach; when he caught up with his master and In, he was surprised and a bit shocked to see them bending over a hollow -- one that was normally full of water and used by Rou-Shou to divine while Rou-Dai supervised. To see his master murmuring to In as the two men gazed into its depths made Rou-Shou feel dizzy for a moment... until Rou-Dai turned and beckoned him closer, to show him that they were not looking into a pool of water but rather to something very strange; some sort of hole in the very fabric of their plane, leading not to the spirit world they had sometimes glimpsed into but somewhere entirely different. They looked down into a moonlight-lit scene, the edge of an unfamiliar lake perhaps ten feet below, with buildings of an unfamiliar style lining it.
This was not the Silver World -- that was obvious to all of them. And for all Rou-Dai's experience and skill, he could not tell them what it was. Deeply troubled, he assigned both apprentices to watch the portal in case it did anything while he was gone and departed to find one of the more experienced mystics in their area of the island.
Rou-Shou, always eager to do what his master bid, sat down before the portal and watched it intently, his secret-seeing eyes looking for any unusual flickers at its edges or changes of its colors. Absorbed in this task -- and also not suspecting anything of In, who had never done anything but carefully ignore the younger-but-senior apprentice -- the boy was entirely unprepared to be struck on the back of the head and knocked out. He was unconscious for long enough for the older boy to tie his hands and stuff the pouches of his belt full of stones, then push him through the portal and into the icy cold lake.
There Rou awoke, lying against the sand on the bottom, his head spinning... but quite alive, as though he was younger than In, he had already advanced far enough in his training that the air dissolved in the water was enough to sustain him. Rou was thoroughly confused -- what sort of prank was this? Why was In trying to hide him from their master... for In knew that he could breathe the water, right? and wouldn't possibly try to do something so horrible as try to kill him...?
Though it took a while, he freed his hands and removed the stones from his belt and surfaced, taking a great gasp of the better air above the waterline. But then, to his horror, he realized that the portal that should have been hanging in the air above him was no longer there -- in however long a time he had spent under the water, it had vanished.
And Rou-Dai had not come to rescue him...

Golden WorldIn» confused Rou-Shou should have known, really, that In might be favored - being older, bolder, and overall more capable - but this ? Could he have really... tried to kill me ? I should have told Master what I thought, what I felt from day one, but now it is too late. Once I find my way back home, there will be much explaining to do !!!! And Rou-Shou will not stay silent this time ! Silver World...Gaia Boyan» smile Master Boyan is very kind - without him, Rou would probably still be a paniced, sobbing mess in a corner somewhere.
Tsubame» smile Lady Tsubame is very kind to allow her to live in... ...near... her home. Hopefully she will not be offended, but I cannot seem to be able to sleep in what they call bedrooms...
Ruokei» 4laugh Ruokei is very nice, calm, and fun to just talk and BE with. He knows so much about me already and he... doesn't mind. I think he's the first friend my own age that I've had...
Silver» smile Seems very... loud sometimes. One of Master Boyan's friends, and he does seem to be a very nice person.
"Misty"» eek What. Just.... What.
Meirou» confused Well, that... was strange...
Eiji» eek So cute and tiny ! Seems to look alot like Master Boyan somehow, or maybe's Rou just seeing things. Rou kind of hopes he doesn't have to hold him, he's kind of afraid to break him...
Tsubaki» eek Sooooo tiny, like her brother. But more outgoing ? Maybe ? It's hard for Rou to tell.
Melody» smile Master Boyan's daughter. I did not see a lot of her yet, as she lives at her own house with her husband.
Boyan» smile Like Melody, Rou does not know much about Boyue yet. He seems a very kind person and very good father to his chibis.
Setsushi» eek Is rather tall.
