Gaia Q&F for the GPG

ALWAYS BEING UPDATED

~~~
This thread is going to be dedicated to answering Gaia-related technical problems. Think of it as a mini-Questions and Assistance Forum of sorts.
I am making this thread because many people simply do not frequent the Q&A forum nor know where to begin looking for help. This thread is meant to be a STARTING point. This thread is not meant to be a replacement for the Q&A forum, but rather help to steer you in the right direction.
Many of us GPGers lurk (or are active) in Q&A, and we may can answer or help you with your problem as well.
So if you have a question about a Gaia-related problem, please post away! I cannot promise that we will be able to answer everything, but we will try.
And for those of you who post up answers, please be sure that you're posting up factual info, or GOOD educated guesses. You can also post up links to Q&F threads if there is one already made that is addressing the problem at hand. And do not post advice that is considered a 'no-no' by Gaia Mods or Admins.
I hope this may help some of you!
The Questions and Assistance Forum
~~~

Ok, so you checked the Announcement forum and still have a question? Well, then this is the place for you:

The Questions and Assistance Forum
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=5
This is the place to be if you have some Gaia-related question and you need some answers.

But what should you do in the Q&A forum? Well, there are a number of things to do. FIRST, you should read through the stickies at the top of the forum and see if one of those answers your question. SECOND, you should read through the first couple of pages of threads to see if one of those addresses your question. If so, then read through that thread. Post in that thread if neccessary. THIRDLY, you should make your own topic if you cannot find any other thread that already addresses your question.

Now, if you must make your own thread, please take some things into consideration before you do:
Type coherently - please try to spell, punctuate, capitalize, and use correct grammar as best you can. No one can help you if they cannot read your post.
Present all info - if you have quotes, screen shots, links, compuet info, or anything else relevant to your problem that you think could help to solve it, please post it up. Every little bit of info you can provide will make it that much easier for someone to help you.
Be patient - Q&A is a semi-slow moving forum. There is NO need for bumping unless your thread has fallen to the second page without an answer. Also, it just may be that no one knows the answer to your question, so no one may post initially. Give it time and patience, and soon enough you will recieve help.
Have good manners - if someone does help you, it doesn't hurt to thank them. Just let thme know you appreciate it. This will go a long way in the Q&A forum, plus it lets someone know that they're appreciated and helpful. Also, if someone gives you advice you don't want to hear, just ignore it. There is never a reason to start a flame war in Q&A. Also, don't post while angry. If a glitch or something has gotten you upset, screaming and having a hissy fit at poeple in Q&A about it won't help. Chill out first, then make your post.

When all else fails, you should contact a moderator for further assistance.

Contacting a Gaia Moderator

~~~
Ok, so you've been to the Announcements forum and to Q&A, but you still need some more help. Well, then the next step is contacting a Moderator or Helper. The simplest way to do this is to PM one.
However, you must always PM the CORRECT mod for the problem. So, how do you know who to PM for what? I'll tell you:
Dedicated Gaia Moderators handle forum moderation, Art Arena approvals/disapprovals, Link List moderation, Gaia Guild Network moderation, and more. Send signature removal requests, Terms of Service questions, and other general forum questions to these moderators.
Global Gaia Moderators handle abuse and harassment reports, as well as oversee moderation throughout the site.
Omnimoderators handle account issues, including hacking and scamming reports. Talk to these moderators about problems you may have with your account, items, and inventories.
Administrators are the creators, programmers, and developers of Gaia Online. It's generally not recommended to PM the admins, but if you have a question about moderator conduct in particular, you should contact Jakobo, L0cke, or Ling.
Helpers are not moderators, but they assist moderators in certain forums. They have the power to move threads in their assigned forum. Contact Helpers if you'd simply like to have a thread moved.
Blue names are not moderators, but users on your friendslist. Grey names are not moderators, but users on your ignorelist. If you have a moderator on your friendlist or ignore list, however, it will override the mod-color, and show them as blue or grey to you.
Here is a USER MADE thread that gives more details about the individual Admins, Mods, and Helpers:
http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9723913
Now that you've found a Mod, you need to report the problem. Here's another USER MADE thread detailing exactly how to report a problem:
http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=868595
And, if you need immediate help, please make sure the Mod you contact is ONLINE. If the Mod you contact is offline, you will have to wait until they log on again before they can help you.
Feedback Forms
~~~

So, you tried everything else, including contacting a Mod, and yet you STILL require further assistance? Then there is one last option:

The Feedback Form
http://reinhart.gaiaonline.com/info/feedback.php
Feedback Form
If you have donation or support related problems, be sure to include as much information as you can, such as info from your paypal receipt if you haven't received your thank you letter, or the URL and the error message if you have problem with a specific feature.

To report an abusive user, or if you need help with the forum, please contact a Gaia moderator who is online.

Please expect at least one week for a response. Delays might be longer due to certain update schedules. Thank you for your patience. ^_^

Now you must wait.

Loki's Image Map Tutorial of Doom!!

~~~
Ok, I know there's already a tutorial on this located here, but I wanted to make a new one that's a bit more "user friendly" for y'all.
I hope this will help explain somethings and help anyone who wants a sig like mine to make one. So here goes.....
STEP ONE
First thing's first, AFTER you have made (or had made for you) your actual image you will use for this signature (saved as either a GIF or JPG file), you MUST download this file :
http://web.mit.edu/wuster/www/gaia/sig_mapper_0.1.zip
This is the EXACT same file (and exact same link) found in Jakabo's thread (no, it's not some virus or any crap like that. Just a ZIP file containing 2 documents for this sig). So DL them first.
After you have it DLed, you'll wanna extract and open it . Within that file are two documents:
  • map.php - runtime file
  • imagemap.class.php - class file for PHP image map
You only really need to mess with one of them for this signature. So open up map.php in Notepad (or any similar text/word processor program you have).
STEP TWO
The following text is pretty much taken directly from Jakobo's thread as it is pretty self explanatory.
Jakobo
/* Gaia Image Map Go-er
Rudolph J Heuser
*/
require_once("imagemap.class.php")
// new imageMap
$myImageMap = new imageMap()
See the above lines? Yeah, don't touch them. You need to include them in order to make it work. You don't technically need the comments line, but I have no reservations about beating you with pots and pans.
STEP THREE
Jakobo
Below that, you will see a sequence of definitions that define regions that are clickable:
$area = new Rect(84,184,189,192,"")
$myImageMap->addToMap($area)
The first line $area = new Rect(84,184,189,192,""); creates a new rectangle shape. The syntax is:
TOP_LEFT_X,TOP_LEFT_Y,BOTTOM_RIGHT_X,BOTTOM_RIGHT_Y,"URL_TO_GO_TO"
So in the above example, it will create a clickable box that goes from 84,184 to 189,192. The link goes nowhere (in mine, it is the first link in my signature).
You may then add as many of the regions as you need to.
The easiest way to get these coordinates is to open your image up in MS Paint. On your image, hover your mouse over the top left corner of where you'd like one of your links to go. You'll notice in the bottom right corner of MS Paint is a set of numbers. Those numbers are your coordinates for that point! These are referred to as "x,y" coordinates. You'll want to get coordinates for the top left corners and bottom right corners for ALL of your link areas.
If you use my current sig as an example, I had to get coordinates for the top left corner and bottom right corner of all my little black boxes.
STEP FOUR
Jakobo
See this code?
$myImageMap->setDefaultURL("")
That's the default URL. If they don't click on any of the specified regions, where exactly do they go? You don't technically need this, but it would be nice.
I recommend adding a "default url." What this means, is if anyone clicks somewhere on your sig that you did NOT defined with coordinates, then they will be taken to wherever your default url is. In my sig, I have made my default url into my quest thread. So if you click anywhere on my sig that is NOT a defined link, you will be taken to my quest thread by default.
STEP FIVE
Jakobo
Finally,
// capture X and Y from query string
$x_and_y = $_SERVER["QUERY_STRING"]
$x_and_y = explode(",",$x_and_y)
$inX = $x_and_y[0]
$inY = $x_and_y[1]
unset($x_and_y)
// echo $inX. "," . $inY;
$myImageMap->testMap($inX, $inY)
Don't touch this either. It actually captures the information about where the user clicked on your sig.
STEP SIX
Jakobo
Now all that remains is one final question: How the #^$% do I get this into my sig?!
[align=center][url=http://path/to/map.php][/url][/align]
The most important part is the word ismap in the image tag. It specifies to the browser you will be sending the click information to the link tag. The link tag itself points to your script!
FINAL VERSION OF THE CODE
Jakobo
Care to see a final version?
/* Gaia Image Map Go-er
Rudolph J Heuser
*/
require_once("imagemap.class.php")
// new imageMap
$myImageMap = new imageMap()
// define regions
// personal web site
$area = new Rect(60,134,173,144,"http://www.felocity.org")
$myImageMap->addToMap($area)
// fansub group
$area = new Rect(60,144,153,154,"http://www.kaizoku-fansubs.com")
$myImageMap->addToMap($area)
// chord hall
$area = new Rect(60,154,219,164,"http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2049197")
$myImageMap->addToMap($area)
// the grey kitsune
$area = new Rect(60,164,253,174,"http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=329330")
$myImageMap->addToMap($area)
// espy's port quest
$area = new Rect(60,174,242,184,"http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1767759")
$myImageMap->addToMap($area)
// thread link thing
$area = new Rect(60,184,262,194,"http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2469814")
$myImageMap->addToMap($area)
// wishlist trade box
$area = new Rect(236,44,493,87,"http://www.gaiaonline.com/gambino/bank.php?mode=trade&uid=507907")
$myImageMap->addToMap($area)
// load my profile if all else fails
$myImageMap->setDefaultURL("http://ian.gaiaonline.com/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=507907")
// capture X and Y from query string
$x_and_y = $_SERVER["QUERY_STRING"]
$x_and_y = explode(",",$x_and_y)
$inX = $x_and_y[0]
$inY = $x_and_y[1]
unset($x_and_y)
// echo $inX. "," . $inY;
$myImageMap->testMap($inX, $inY)
?>
STEP SEVEN
Save this document as a PHP file once you're done adding your urls and coordinates. No other type of file will work. Only PHP.
HOSTING
Hosting the image:
Hosting the image is easy. Just use whatever you're currently using as an image host, or use any of the number of free ones on the internet.
Hosting the PHP Files:
Now you'll be asking, "Where can I host a PHP document at for free?" Well, that's a toughie. Your BEST bet is to have your OWN web space already that will host PHP, but if you don't then perhaps do a quick search on the net for places that will do it. I am currently using www.hostinganime.com to host my 2 PHP files for this sig. However, if you uwant to use this same host, you should note the following:
Jakobo
HostingAnime.com - (rename imagemap.class.php to "imagemap.php" and change the requires line in map.php. HostingAnime doesn't like .class files it seems)
You will need to upload both of those PHP files to your host. Upload the one you didn't mess with (the imagemap.class.php) AND the one that you worked on (the map.php).
FINAL REMARKS
That SHOULD be everything you need to know about making an image map for your sig. If not, please post in this thread and I (or anyone else who knows) will be more than happy to help you out!
ADVANCED IMAGE MAPS AND CONCEPTS
Here are some advanced concepts for you who would like to try them. However, I don't have any personal experience with these yet, so if you try them, you're on your own!... unless someone else around here knows about them.
DISCLAIMER
And one more thing.....
Jakobo
Mandatory Disclaimer of DOOM: I don't promise anything with these. I do place them under the Creative Commons License (Not GPL or Similar). Before you ask, I wanted to give CC a fair shake, and show that it can be used for certain applications of code and development. Please, if you develop or do more cool stuff with this foundation, put it up here so others can enjoy it too! I am also not responsible if you do something stupid and wipe out your web server. This also only extends my region class into Rect. Eventually, I will add Circle, and I would love to add Poly so that this functions exactly like a Server Side Image Map. Alas, that all takes time, and I only can sit here and bang on keys so many hours a day. ^_^
This disclaimer also applies to me and this thread!!
How to Post Images Using BBCode on Gaia
~~~

1st: Your photos MUST be on your computer. Either use a digital camera, or scan regular pictures in with a scanner. Or get them put on a disc for you at Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, or any place like that.

2nd: Once you've got the photos on your computer, you must find a place on the internet to "host" them for you. There are MANY places to do this, but a really good, free one is www.photobucket.com . You just register for a FREE membership, and you're all set.

3rd: Now you must upload the pictures to your host. This is usually pretty self-explanatory (as in your host's website will usually tell you what to do), but if not, look for a place on their site that says something to the effect of "Upload Picture" or "Submit Picture" and "Browse." Press the "Browse" button to look through your computer files for the picture you want to upload. Once you've found that specific picture, double click on it and then press "Submit" on the web page. Depending on your internet speed, it could take a while to upload. But once it's successfully uploaded, you will now be able to link it. Your picture will have its very own website address now that you can use in links.

4th: In order to make a link to your uploaded picture on a message board like this, you need to use BBcode. The BBcode for linking pictures on Gaia is the following:

[img]www.yourimageaddresshere.com[/img]

That will make your picture show up in a post. Here is an example using one of my own pictures I have hosted at Photobucket.

User Image
That's my super mature husband.

My code looked like this:

[img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v64/badloki/ChrisNose.jpg[/img]

5th: Aaaand that's all you need to do. This info also applies to putting images in your signature as well. But bear in mind that Gaia has placed limits to how big signature images can be, so please look up the rules on that.

I believe it is 100 of any given item.

There are now patchwork boots and Tire on my head.

So even if you are shitty fisherman you can trade in 100 of those and get something.
