There was once a time when the Mchanga’Wakimbiaji had grass under their paws. In those days, they were known simply as the Mori. They lived in such harmony, in a great eden. Everyone thought it would last forever. There was tall, lush grass as far as the eye could see, with what seemed to be an endless pool of clear water. The Mori thrived in their eden, with little ones popping up everywhere and the world seemed to be perfect.
But that all changed when the rain stopped.
Slowly, the Chief, Nasir, could feel the land dying beneath his paws. He looked out to the horizon every morning, hoping, praying for rain. But the Gods never answered him. He watched his pack slowly fall, succumbing to starvation or dehydration all around him. As their numbers dwindled, Nasir decided that they had to make a choice- to stay here, and die, or to head through the desert and try to survive. His eldest son, Kaveh, pleaded with his father to stay and give the rains another chance- that the Gods wouldn’t just leave them to die out completely. Nasir, however, knew that rain would not come in time. With his youngest son, Ghazi, who was just a pup, Nasir took all that would follow him through the Ogaden desert, hoping to find life somewhere within the sandy dunes.
Heart heavy, Kaveh stayed behind, leaving his father with nothing but harsh words and threats. Feeling betrayed, Kaveh stayed to lead the rest of his followers to their fate- whether it be promising or not.
In the desert, Nasir grew hopeless. Many perished along the way, and he didn’t know how much longer it would be until the entire group met their demise. But over the next dune, Nasir found what he had been praying for- water. With just a handful of them left, Nasir decided to settle around the small patch of water that they had found, until it ran out. As the pack started to renew itself, Nasir set out members to try and find other sources of water, paranoid that this lone source would not supply for a pack.
Wandering from known oasis to oasis, the Mchanga made their constant, circling route their homelands, adjusting their previous culture to fit the needs of the desert. By this point, Nasir had grown old and tired, heartbroken by the choice to leave his son so many moons ago. With his passing, his son, now a grown male, took the head of the pack, keeping it alive as it begins to thrive in the rough desert.
Ranks
King // The leader of the group. Currently the King is Ghazi.
Consort // The 'wife' or 'mate' of the King.
Master/Mistress // The generals. They make sure everyone runs smoothly and any problems are dealt with.
Vulture // The ones who find resources. These are members that have renowned senses and can find water and food.
Spotters // The 'scouts' of the pack. As a very wary pack, these dogs are used heavily and aren't normally seen while they're working. They are only used for alarms and warners of anyone or thing coming towards them.
Sand // The adults in the pack. They make up the bulk of the pack and mostly hunt once food is found.
Bones // The healers of the pack. They take care of any injuries quickly, as they can be fatal in the desert.
Bloom // The youth of the pack. Like little flowers, they are celebrated and raised with care.
Government
The King leads the pack with a warm and sturdy paw. Because of the nature of the pack, the King is more involved in the pack, and has more personal connections to more of the 'regular' ranks. Behind the scenes, the Master/Mistress reports things to the King, so they can be dealt with quickly without causing any problems.
The rest of the pack works together well, most having specialized tasks that all mesh within the system. No one is 'above' or 'below' anyone else, aside from the Master and the King. While the Consort holds her title, she generally doesn't have any power or job other than to keep the pack happy and peaceful, and maybe advise the King.
Beliefs
Outsiders
Outsiders are usually spotted well before they happen upon the pack. Spotters are sent out to meet them and evaluate them, as the pack is very wary of outsiders and threats to their very delicate way of life. If they are seen as a non-thread, they're allowed to be in the pack.
Breeding
To help keep their pack alive, breeding is something that is always supported, as long as resources are plentiful during the first few months of the pups' lives. Whether they result from a loving couple or a one-night-stand, the pack will still welcome them and raise them to be active and strong dogs.
Promises
Something that might not be taken as seriously in other packs, the Mchanga take promises and 'words' very seriously. Living in a place that could change at any moment, promises are a refreshing dose of stability. Broken promises and lies are severely punished, sometimes by exile from the pack entirely. The Mchanga don't want to risk having someone like that in the pack, as they are seen as a threat.
Death
To the Mchanga, death is a quickly mourned thing. With the changing sands, they can't afford to stay and mourn a death for long period of time. Usually, a large tuft of fur is taken from the deceased and given to their most loved one.
