When browsing through avatars, I come along the same avatars over and over again; while the major part of the avatars get no attention at all; pretty annoying for myself because I have already voted for those avatars; and I have to look myself for avatar that I haven't voted on yet (and most of the time I can't find any - which is impossible) and pretty unfair that some avatars get more attention then other. Fix the random browsing I'd say

On a side note - is gaia ever gonna fix the weeks where there were a couple of winners? (I think week 42) It's pretty screwed for the ones that did make it to top-ten but didn't place because they had an average of lower then 4.0

Coco's Secret Admirer

Please take down the arenas until they're fixed. This is the second week in a row. And this time all the top 10 have 5 averages...

Also...If you're going to allow people to delete their vote to correct it... please make sure it actually works...

... and it's the same people in the spotlight AGAIN!!! scream

Crumbly Codger

This is something very annoying that I've noticed (no worries, I'm not here to flame or rant sweatdrop ):

When you actually vote on an entry, the next avatar it shows is usually very random, and something I hadn't voted on yet. But when you do get shown something you've already voted on, and you click the 'forward' arrow for the next avatar, it's always the same exact avatar and line-up that follows, no matter what entry you clicked the forward button from.

edit: Oh, sorry, I didn't see Hime's post sweatdrop
I'm about ready to submit at n00b avatar in the arena if week 50 messes up like week 48 and 49. This is starting to piss people off.

Just wondering why my avi seems to be open for voting yet it's not showing at ALL in the 24 pages of entries in the original arena. It happened to a friend of mine last week, and I know of at least onother 3 people who are experiencing the same thing this week. Will the people who got diddled out of a fair shot be getting a refund or a free re-entry for another week when the arena is working?

Surely it would just be fairer to everyone entering if there was just a "random" tab. I'm no programmer but surely it would be easier to just have a system that put up 12 avi's an hour (for example) in the spotlight rather than constanty shifting and changing the same 20 people who are hoggin' the limelite? (no offence to those who are constantly spotlit!)That way everyone gets the same screen time as it were, and people would have no idea about what's popular and what's not just by looking at the spotlight, therefore decreasing downvoting?

On a less important note, the old arenas would let you see where you placed (withing the top 50 I think) after the voting had closed. Will that feature be coming back? It'd also be nice to see how many people have voted on your entry.

Also, I got my gold for winning week 47 almost immediately after the winners were posted, but I still havent had anything for my 9th place in week 45 Meee-ow. wink would be nice if the prize money was a little more forthcoming!

My inclination at this point is to go to one tab, and on the tab is either a a) totally random selection, or b) random selection biased for entries that haven't received many votes yet. Suggestions welcome. Why not both? One can be labeled Random and the other something along the lines of Hidden Talent

oh i like 3nodding

I also like this idea. We stick with the two-tab system that we've had with the new arenas since they've begun, but they'd be more random and fair. The switching of entries in those tabs should be often, though. Even if an entry only has a few votes, it should not spend the entire week spotlighted in one of the tabs. That's unfair to everyone.

I also like the idea someone had about being able to vote half-stars. I know your first post said that the arenas would most likely stay in the five-star system as opposed to a ten-star system, but I think five stars is too few options.

EDIT: And I want to point out that having the top ten avatars visible throughout the week, and being able to see another person's score, is a bad idea. It definitely invites downvoting.

Oh, and we should be allowed to edit our titles and descriptions without having to resubmit. We could edit those as much as we wanted during the week with the old arenas, and I can't figure out why this option was done away with. I've seen people get downvoted for a simple typo in their title, and then they can't even fix it!

What about if you make it so that the top 3 or 4 always show up in the spotlight box. And then the rest of the boxes are filled with random avatars (based upon how few votes they've gotten)? That way the top voted one CAN NOT squirt by with 12 votes. And it still showcases other avatars that aren't necessarily campaigning, thus still getting them attention as well?
PLEASE fix the arenas. crying It makes me cry to see such horrible avatars win and such beautiful ones lose!

Tiny Shapeshifter

My main concern with the avatar arena? I haven't been to the arena lately but I can list what I dislike about it when it was updated.

1. Avatar entry being close up (enlarged). I'm not fond of close up avatars.
2. Not being able to vote on rando avatars. It is unfair to many entries when I give up a small portion of the way down the list. Please force the rando feature onto the voters. You can keep the search user feature. D:
3. Some people mentioned about 24-25 pages of entries. I feel that Gaia is leaving some entries out because I find it strange to have about the same amount of avatar entries per week.
4. Being able to see the current standing (current rating) of entries when it's in voting/rating stage. Downvoting is encouraged here, and I do not understand why it should be showed to the voters in the first place. There's a big difference between the avatar arena and art/writing arena (avatar entry only stay up for a week, you can submit multiple art/writing to be rated in the art/writing arena).
A group of moderators dedicated to the arena. My matching cosplay was "so what if it matches your avi sucks balls."
It is not about quality it is about matching and reason when you cosplay. Moderators in the arena could lower flaming that takes place there.
EDIT: bring back my favorite arena feature: the actual change of new and spotlight when you browse because mine and others are not being seen my jessica makuh original entry in avi avg:never rated (4 weeks ago) talk2hand

You can report such comments, use the "Report as Spam" link and state the comment is abusive. I know it says Spam but can use that link to report ToS violations too.

Moderators do not have the time to go through every submission, every day, to get rid of the abusive comments.... it wouldn't be feasible. It's up to the users to report such cases so they can be dealt with.

Angelic Blob

EDIT Dec 12 Strike line to indicate that Devs have handled the issue or acknowledged it. Also made some additional comments and corrected spelling errors.

Arena Main
Hope this isn't coming off as harsh.

Instead of having a random Entry from whatever arena- present on the Arena Main.
Have there be a Splash page instead,
with what the Arenas are and with the links to the Rules in plain view. It should also mention the time the Weeks end, a lot of people are STILL ASKING when voting starts, why is their entry set for next week instead of this week etc.

The fact that there are now two Avatar arenas has not been mentioned on the Arena Main.
If I click the Arena Main - I don't want to end up loading a House entry, when I can just search for that on my own.

I also do not understand removing Devs from a feature that is clearly in need of repairs.
I know you guys must be frustrated, and want to move on to other projects, but the Arena does require attention.

Considered Additions:
+ Larger Reference Image box

+ Ability to recast your vote if you mis-click.

+ Edit your Desc and Title. Was this ability removed? It's quite frustrating for Gaians who want to edit or explain something, and they can't do it.

+ Perhaps explain how the 5 Stars work... some people think a 3 is "bad" when it really isn't. A 3 is like saying "Average".

+ Give the Submitter the ability to lock and unlock the comments features at anytime. Especially after wins. In the old arena, the comments would lock right after the winner placed.
A lot of people have been leaving really hurtful comments on the previous winners of 48 and 49, it is not the top 10s fault that the avatar arena is glitching.

- If people are bothered by repetitive avatar entries. Perhaps hint that voters like to see variety in the arena. But certainly don't force people to dress their avatar a certain way because of disgruntled voters.

- Change "My Stuff" to something a bit more fitting for the Arena.
Like "My Page" "My Gallery" or "My Section" ?

Pros:
+ Keep 5 Star rating.

+ Love the fact that I can see what I searched for.

+ Keep both Original and Cosplay arena. I actually like this.

+ Keep winners - 10 Original and 10 Cosplay

+ Being able to view Galleries with the drop down menu.

+ I like the Arena set up, it's plain and simple.

+ (Feb 18 ) Thanks for the "Delete" feature, this way people can delete entries that they have reentered, but don't want to see the repeat on their MyStuff section.

Cons:
- When clicking the Avatar Arena, I get sent to the House Arena.

- Sometimes when I vote, I get sent to another Arena or I get sent to the "View all page".

- Correct me if I am wrong. You can't click "Next" past 24 pages. I believe there are more entries in there, and I just can't get to them. I have to make an addition of 21 to the current link, to get to a new page. Thanks for correcting this

- Being informed of comment deletion. Do you realize that this is a cause for backlash?
Some people who felt that they made a balanced review on an entry, only to be informed of it's deletion, don't handle that too well.
There is no need to inform us of comment deletion, that is the Gaians' (submitter of the entry) own decision.

- MyGaia feeds, I am constantly getting alerts on what was voted on. I have this set to the lowest setting, and I am still getting them.

- Searching. I love the thing, but when I search for something I want to vote on what is Current in the arena I do not understand why I am shown entries that were from months ago. Shouldn't those be archived? They should not blend with a new Week, In my opinion.
Although some of the searches line up with the current date first, sometimes the current date will end up behind a previous date/month.
Thank you for the Archive Feature ^_^b

- I don't understand why "My Gallery" loads everything from my Profile... shouldn't we just be able to edit our Gallery the way we want?

Avatar Arena
It seems to be the only arena that has been hit with Weeks of troubles.

  • It glitches, Avatars are not random, they are one after the other, the same as if I were to check the "View all page". And when it tries to go random, it goes back to the previous avatar I just voted or viewed. This seems to be worked on, thank you.

  • Winners are Still missing from previous weeks!

  • Would like to see more Background colors.
Though I Thank you for adding the Gray and White. ^_^

  • Ability to resize your Avatar. If it is possible to implement. Since a lot people don't like having their Avatar blown up to see every pixel. There are Gaians that depend on the pixels blending, and you only get that when the Avatar is small.

  • What constitutes as Original, and what is Cosplay. If you need help with this, I can do that and so can others who have been in the AvA forum since the Avatar Arena's creation.
The points that can be made for both are rather simple.

Art / Writing Arena
  • Why is this called an Arena? People can rate your images / writing, yet the only thing you get is ranking and compliments. What happened to the medals?

  • Though some people do enjoy that others are seeing their work. I just don't see a reason for voting on something that doesn't particularly lead to someone getting gift for their efforts. Perhaps I am being greedy that way, even though I never entered a piece in these two arenas.

  • How about replacing Medals with Ribbons?
If someones position is held for a 2 weeks or (longest) 1 month, they get a prize.

House Arena
  • Please let there be a prize for people who win. I think the ones that spent gold and time creating their houses theme deserve a prize. I have seen some great entries.

  • Browsing the House Arena was better when I didn't have to load the houses individual items.
Why was this the final decision? It's very discouraging, it's slow, and just doesn't make sense. The only reason I can think of is that you don't want to archive entries.
But to me the screenshot of the Houses worked a lot better.

  • I have mentioned this before. Loading 10 winners , let alone a "View all page" when it comes to the House arena is just ridiculous. I hardly browse or vote, because of all the loading.
If there is an explanation to this new style, I will stop mentioning the issues I have with it and just not use the House arena.

I just would like to say Thanks for the cosplay arenas,
But I would not like to see the same avatars winning again and again,
Rem from Death Note has been entered alot with the same avatar,
Its already won twice (1-original, 2-cosplay)
Alot of different Death Note L- Lawliet enter with the same avatar over and over so its hard to find newer cosplays to rate
KillerLee
How about keeping people from putting up Cosplay avatars from popular anime like Naruto, Bleach, Inu Yasha, Death Note, and DBZ? That would clear a lot of the avatar arena of suck.

Users vote on what they like, this is not a problem a Dev can fix, because there is nothing to fix when it comes to this.

The only rule on entries, is that they can't have a glitch base or be explicit in theme.
Making a rule on what type of outfit combo or cosplay that can be entered, is just (to be blunt, sorry) stupid.

You can make threads in the AvA that discuss and gives advice on the Arena. Letting people know that some arena voters dislike seeing the same combo or cosplay every week.
I think that magnifying the avatars to such a large size detracts from the quality of the arenas. Since our avatars were made to be 120 x 150 and that's the size they appear in on most of the site, it makes no sense to make them a completely different size in the arena. Blowing it up so much shows us the nasty pixelled edges, and especially with Firefox 3, renders the entire avatar into a horrible blurry, smeary thing. This makes the whole purpose of the arenas, rating and ranking the avatars, needlessly more difficult.
