Wait I thought the "Dog Days of Summer" was in August when it's so stifling hot that even the dogs don't want to play.

The dog days refers to the dog star Sirius* and the position the star was in the sky. To Greeks and Romans the "dog days" occurred around the day when Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun... which was in late July.
