ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) The cast and crew of transgender movie "The Danish Girl" walked a rain-soaked red carpet for the film's world premiere at the Venice Lido on Saturday (September 5). Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander and Amber Heard all stopped to meet fans and pose for the cameras before entering the Sala Grande at the Venice Film Festival. Heard's husband, actor Johnny Depp, whose new film "Black Mass" premiered at the festival on Friday (September 4), delighted fans with a surprise appearance as he escorted his wife on the red carpet. "The Danish Girl" is about the real-life story of gender-conflicted Danish landscape painter Einar Wegener. Born male in 1882, Wegener (played by Redmayne) was one of the first people to undergo sex-reassignment surgery, in 1930 in Dresden. Although married to the portraitist Gerda Gottlieb, Wegener since childhood had experienced feelings that he was a woman trapped inside a man's body. An artists' ball in Copenhagen -- where Gerda suggests that her shy and delicate husband dress up as a woman -- brings out the latent female tendencies. She also gets Wegener to pose as a woman for art-deco style portraits that help make her reputation. Even while married, Wegener begins living as a woman, and takes the name Lili Elbe. After grappling with the emotional and societal issues of coming out as female, she goes on to attempt the transition, including removal of male organs and construction of a v****a. The film is directed by Tom Hooper, who also made "The King's Speech", and he compared the struggle for transgender people to gain acceptance by wider society to the current migrant crisis in Europe at a news conference earlier in the day. Redmayne, who won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of the British physicist Stephen Hawking this year, stars as Wegener, with the film following the artist's transformation from male to female. Swedish star, Alicia Vikander, who previously starred as a cyborg in "Ex Machina", plays the role of Wegener's wife, Gerda. She spent time trying to win the love of Wegener when he was male and accepts and supports him through his transition into Lili. The film is one of 21 in competition for the top Lion d'Or prize to be awarded next Saturday, September 12.
