Does it have to be a literal falling star?

As long as what you're writing let's me see very clearly that it's related to the prompt, then it's okay. If that answer made any sense at all.
Would you mind giving me an example of what you're wondering about?

A girl who has everything and loses it all. Sounds cliched, I know, but I think it could work.

As long as the phrase "falling star" is used somewhere in the story, it's eligible. The use can be literal or figurative.

Hm... 8000 words is quite a lengthy short story. I'm interested in the contest but think it would be less intimidating to lower the word count minimum. Perhaps to about 5 or 6000.

The point of this is to set a challenge for the writers competing. To me, 8000 words seems perfectly acceptable. However, if multiple participants tell me they're having trouble reaching the limit closer to the deadline (somewhere in November) then I might consider lowering the word count. But I think it's possible, so right now the limit will stay.

I'm excited though because I think I found an idea that's big enough to take up 8000 words but not so big that it needs an entire novel.
That always seems to be my problem. I have small ideas for short stories and gigantic ideas for novels, but never something in between. So this is a good challenge for me.

3nodding fair warning though, you probably won't get to read it until the very last minute before the deadline. I tend to hold on to things as long as possible before I submit them. Gives me time for those moments of: 'Oh crap! I forgot to fix that one part!'
