It was a long, long time ago that a vile and dark beast ravaged the earth. It sought only itself to satisfy, spreading chaos and darkness wherever it so went. The Goddesses, it is told, bound the creature and banished it from the realm of light. And, for ages, the monster had been locked away, its bonds keeping it from ever again glimpsing the sun.

But one day, without warning, the ground gave a horrendous shudder. From monstrous cracks, it seeped; a veil of shadows that descended upon the prosperous kingdom of Hyrule. The kingdom was once a place of peace and light but the shadows began to spread with impunity, turning all within their cast to darkness. The earth was poisoned by the foul miasma. Forests, once the most verdant of greens, became foreboding. The grassy fields withered, monsters rising where none had been before. And the people who breathed the tainted air were not themselves; they were transformed into creatures of pure evil, their shapes warped to resemble the demons that were ever sweeping across the lands.

Just when it seemed as if all hope were lost, it was the Raabin who appeared. In the wake of the tragedy, a mysterious people rose up from the deepest bowels of the earth, their faces hidden beneath mysterious masks. The Raabin named themselves the keepers of the King of Darkness, those tasked by the Goddesses with ensuring that the evil spirit would remain within his prison for evermore. But the King of Darkness had sundered from his shackles and escaped.

The Raabin bestowed upon a swordsman, one who radiated a golden light, the Eternal Sphere. With both courage and the Raabin's most sacred of treasures, he defeated the King of Darkness and purified the land, freeing its people from the influence of evil. It was then, using the power of the Eternal Sphere, that the hero was able to seal the King of Darkness and his plague once more beneath the earth. And, with the taint locked away, the Raabin vanished. They took with them the Eternal Sphere, resuming the mantle of guarding the King of Darkness, so that he might never again wreak havoc upon the lands above.

Peace had been restored to the kingdom of Hyrule and the people rejoiced.

For a time.

While the Raabin and the legend of the hero had faded from memory, there was one who sought dominion of the King of Darkness. He was a shadowy man cloaked from head to toe in black. Looking weary from his travels and the hardships he had faced, the man approached the fountain of the Queen of the Fairy. So weakened, he beseeched that she grant him her blessings of life and ease the pains of his aching body. Unable to turn away from the pained figure, the Queen of the Fairy consented. Upon his head she placed a delicate hand, opening a channel of magic. In so doing, she made herself vulnerable to the darkness within him.

She understood her mistake, only much too late. The man thrust upon the Queen of the Fairy a vile curse. Wholly unprepared for the assault, she was at his mercy. Unfortunately, there was none shown. His cruel magics seeded within her own heart a bitter kind of poison, and through her it began to seep. Unwittingly, the Queen of the Fairy passed to all those under her dominion the same curse. It was a rapid progression, one Great Fairy after another succumbing to the wicked spell.

Their spirits, so twisted by the evil this man had planted, was reflected in their forms; each Great Fairy was transformed, her once beautiful countenance shifting into something horrifying and unspeakable. And so, from each and every Fairy Fountain, darkness began to pour. The lands upon which they rested gradually began to show the effects, monsters emerging to plague the kingdom and its people.

Hyrule was once more threatened, a dark and ominous wind blowing, spawned by a single man's malicious hand.
