      • A small shake of his head was his only response to Mikhail’s question, but he hoped to have some idea of what she was before too long. All he could tell at this point was that she wasn’t human, but there was no outward indication of what she could be. Had she been a demon he would have been able to recognize the flavour of the energy that surrounded her instantly, as he was one himself, and there was something different about her that made him cross drake and vampire off his list of possibilities,

Eyes narrowing suspiciously as she fired off her a response to his question without even stoping to pause to consider her words, Styxx wondered if she had any concern for her life. She wasn’t so foolish to have not noticed the way the villagers did what they could to avoid his gaze and get out of his way when he approached and yet she had decided to follow. Was she a rebel seeking to learn more information about the Riders? He had his doubts; surely a Rebel would have been better trained. But if she was a Rebel, then he was almost certain that there were others in the area.

Looking away from the dark haired girl for a moment, Styxx cast his eyes around the marketplace and focused his senses on their surroundings, trying to determine if there was anyone else who was watching them with a higher than normal amount of interest. Though he couldn't be one hundred percent certain that there was no one else watching, the expressions and body language of those nearby didn't seem to indicate that they were familiar with the girl who was with them. Maybe some of them were showing concern for her wellbeing, but nothing that really showed familiarity as far as he was concerned. If someone in the crowd was accompanying her and she was with the rebels, they were doing a good job at not drawing attention to themselves.

As Mikhail spoke, Styxx turned to watch the girl again. She was perceptive and he would have thought that someone so observant wouldn’t put their life on the line the way she was, and yet here they were. He could be truthful and tell her that sometimes he killed even though no offence had been given, but the boldness of her answer suggested that she wouldn’t scare easily and would ask him why he did it. Styxx wasn’t in the mood to answer that question or have the back and forth that she wanted to draw him into.

Following the Prince was an option as well, and though he would rather not go that route just yet, it may be the only way to get anything from her.

”You’re right; I don’t need protection. But, he's not here to protect me from them.” he paused a moment, hoping that she would be able to make the connection without him having to say more. "You're very perceptive, but you seem lacking in self control. After seeing the way the people in the village avoiding crossing paths with me, you persisted in following. Some would call that suspicious. And as my friend said, your actions could very well lead to your death."

But the real question now was should they let her walk away? If she was working for the Rebels in some way and word got back to King Trey they would all suffer the consequences. Not only that, but if she were a Rebel, there was no way that Styxx could allow her to leave. He frowned, weighing his options a moment before deciding.

"There's something about you that I don't like, and it's not just the way you were following me though the streets." Wanting to cut her off in the event she decided to make a sudden bolt, he shifted his stance slightly so that he would be able to move quickly to intercept her. "One of the reasons they fear me is because I can tell when someone is hiding something and have no patience for games. I know you're more than what you appear to be and it would be in your best interests if you drop the pretence and tell us who and what you are. The more forthcoming you are, the better things will go for you."

  • Hearing Mali’s appreciation of the drink that he’d brought for her felt as though one weight had been lifted off his shoulders. He couldn’t exactly remember when it had happened or why he had started feeling like this, but he felt like he needed her validation to know that he was on the right track, and should he not receive it, he started to worry, run the situation over in his head to try to determine what he had done wrong and what he could possibly do to make things right. And it wasn’t only when he was with Mali, but with anyone who he felt deserved his respect and for him to give them his all when working with them. Whether it be Mali, Mikhail, or King Trey, he didn’t want to disappoint at all. Maybe it started with his parents, but as much as he tried, Kyrian couldn’t really remember them too well or if there was an incident in early childhood that made him crave some sort of validation more than anything.

Reflecting quietly on Mali’s words, Kyrian supposed that what she said made sense. It had been, what, just over ten years since he had last seen Cairo. They had both grown up during their time apart and looked different from when they had last seen each other. There were probably things about their personalities that had changed as well. Though there was apparently some things about Cairo that had remained the same as before. There was still that sense of unease. He was still filled with a feeling that he should be apologizing for something… something… he didn’t know what. Apologize for startling him, yes, but something else. Something that he felt he couldn’t quite control, for how could he control something that he wasn’t even aware of? Should he be more formal? Less formal? More grown up? Older? He couldn’t control that last one at all though.

The more he listed to Cairo speak and studied his body language, the more difficult it became to keep the look of worry off his face. It had been ten years since the Royal Houses of Hentor fell and Trey was forced to seize control before things fell apart, but he had hoped that reminding Cairo of his family and Anna would have done something. Instead, he was met with an apology and a formal title that he didn’t think suited him at all.

Though he was a prince by blood, it was something that Kyrian tried not to have come up in conversation. Who knew what would happen should someone learn who he really was ? He wasn’t ready to face that part of himself, not now or ever. It wasn’t who he was anymore anyway. And even if he was, he and Cairo were of the same rank so it didn’t really make sense that they were using titles. Mikky didn’t use them with any of the Riders or with him so he didn’t really understand why Cairo would, especially after being told he was a Prince.

”My family and I used to go to Crator a lot and that’s where we met. Even if you don’t remember me, you have to remember Anna.”

Cairo had to remember that name. They used to be so close that it used to make him jealous. He worried that one day Cairo would take Anna away from him and there was still that fear that when they found Anna it would happen again, though he’d do everything he could to make sure it didn’t happen.

                      • A hint of a smile touched Laurence’s lips at his elder brother’s words and the look on his face. He supposed he could have done a bit of a better job cleaning up, but he had hoped Sebastian wouldn’t have noticed the faint scent of blood that still clung to him. Oops. He’d deal with the consequences later.

As far as the blonde woman was concerned, it didn’t look as though she would be easy to manipulate as it had first appeared. That was good, he did enjoy a challenge after all. The harder she was to win over, the harder the fall when it inevitably came. He was almost salivating as he imagined it, the look of fear and betrayal in her hazel eyes when he finally bared his fangs to her and took her down like the prey she was.

”Looking after your needs, and the needs of the other humans who will be arriving here tonight, is my main concern,” he murmured with sincerity.

As much as he hated to admit it, what he’d said was true; his very future depended on her remaining alive. Thankfully, all that mattered was that she stay alive for a year and he didn’t have to make sure she was necessarily happy.

Looking past [Isabel] to the redhead who introduced herself, he gave her a smile filled with as much warmth as he could muster, it appeared that she would be a fun play thing as well. Probably not as much fun as the first woman to enter the castle, but who knew? Sometimes the meek ones were full of surprises.

Sensing his sister’s presence behind him, and raising an eyebrow as Isabel attempted, perhaps, to get a bit of a rise from him, Laurence started to wonder about his other siblings, particularly Cadeon. His younger brother was always lazing about doing who knew what and finding himself in all sorts of unflattering situations. It was a challenge to get him to do anything other than sleep and drink his life away. And even then, Laurence was surprised that Cade didn’t claim that picking up a bottle was too much work…

”A feast sounds wonderful,” Laurence responded without much enthusiasm. It wouldn’t be a feast that would interest him in the slightest unless the donors decided to bare their necks to him without any coercion. But whatever would make the humans feel more relaxed.

As he spoke, Aria quietly approached the group, not sparing any of them a glance, and looked out the window before calling to some of their servants to help the humans with their things. The entranceway was going to get rather crowded it seemed, and so far only one of the humans even caught his interest.

That was until he caught the faint scent of blood in the air, wafting in through the opened front door, from one of the pair who stood just outside. He couldn’t stop himself from licking his lips, his eyes dilating as he focused on the figures who stood just outside the threshold. What gave them the villagers the bright idea to send an injured person here?

A welcomed distraction came in the form of a servant who came to inform them that Cade was in the sitting room. Laurence, cleared his throat and nodded in acknowledgement, deciding his best course of action right now would be to check on his brother and make sure he was presentable. Though Aria had just excused herself to the sitting room, he had a feeling she wouldn’t be too successful in stirring Cade to action of any kind. Not that he was any better, but he was perhaps more forceful about it.

”If you would like, you can follow my sister and I to the sitting room. It would probably be warmer than staying here, but that’s your choice.”

With that Laurence excused himself and followed Aria to the sitting room. He was sure that Sebastion could welcome the remaining humans on his own and Saya or Yvette could be around to help him out if he really needed it. On the other hand, Cadeon might prove to be challenging tonight, and he would take any excuse to get away from the smell of blood.

                      • The sound of footsteps behind him indicated that Isabel and Victoria had decided to follow him to the sitting room, brief snippets of their conversation reaching his ears. But even if he wasn’t focusing on trying to overhear what they were saying, he could have guessed easy enough. The humans were so nervous, so skittish. And the fact that they had yet to be told why they were brought here no doubt added to it. Unless plans had changed, Laurence was sure they would know by the time the night was over... and none of them would like it.

He had just stepped foot in the sitting room when Saya bounced over to him, a bright smile on her face, a chrysanthemum in her hair. Seeing her, the corners of his lips twitched upwards in a smile, and the dark, threatening look that seemed almost constantly in his eyes disappeared for a moment. Carefully, he took the flower from her; it seemed almost fitting that she would choose this as the flower to wear tonight, as they would probably all be needing each other's support to get through this horrible ordeal.

”I will,” he replied, and before he could say anything else, Saya was already dashing out the room, a few words thrown in Cadeon's direction.

Smile fading, and his eyes on his brother who lay with half his body on the floor near the fireplace, the other half remaining on the couch, Laurence let out a tired sigh.

                        ”Our guests are here, Cade.”

As he spoke, his fingers worked to carefully put the delicate flower in a buttonhole near the top of the shirt he wore before walking over to his brother and stooping down beside him.

”When was the last time you had something to drink?” Laurence kept his voice low so the women who had followed him into the sitting room wouldn’t overhear, and his eyes expressed a slight disapproval over the state his brother was in. Before dinner started, he was going to have to get a ghoul for his brother to snack on.

Shaking his head as if the answer was irrelevant to him, he started helping his younger brother to a proper sitting position on the couch, talking to him all the while in the same quiet, yet firm, tone of voice.

”I know you don’t want to do this, but it’s going to be much more difficult for you if you don’t even try to act interested in them. Not only will Saya take away your alcohol, but you know Father will hear of how you’re acting from his pet.”

Laurence met his eyes evenly, knowing that having their Father hear of any of this was the last thing Cadeon wanted right now. Straightening Cadeon’s clothes, Laurence scowled wishing the ghouls had thought to make sure Cade wasn’t wearing that jacket he all but lived in. It was too late to change things now, and the best he could do was make sure his brother appeared somewhat decent.

”Sebastion is having the ghouls prepare a dinner for the humans. Do you think you can be on your best behaviour until the night is over? The last thing we need is for them to see you being pulled around by the servants and get any crazy ideas in their head.”

                      • This entire punishment was infuriating. The more he learned of it, the more he thought about it, the less he liked it. The part that was most upsetting was the realization that the terms of his punishment were somewhat open to interpretation. Probably intentional on the part of his father and the Otherworld Government. Keep the donor alive for one year, but they had two months to create as many ghouls as they thought necessary to help run the Castle. So in total they each had a punishment of fourteen months? Or was it only 12? Vexing.

And for what? Being ‘excessively violent and cruel’? They had no idea what they were talking about. It wasn’t sadism, but mercy he showed his prey. He brought them to the height of happiness before ending their miserable existence. In some respects, he supposed that should make this easy. He played with his food enough times in the Otherworld and he could draw it out for a year if he was so inclined. But the problem was, he didn’t care to make it last more than a month at most before he killed, and he always had a fresh supply of humans to drink from whenever he wanted. Now all he had were ghouls who craved his blood more than he cared for theirs, and a singular human to quench his thirst. He wasn’t a fan of leftovers.

Lightning flashed, illuminating up the interior of the castle more than any of the candles and lanterns that lined the walls. Moments later, thunder rumbled, and all went dark again, as if the light had been chased away by the sound. But in that moment, the pale, frightened, face of the ghoul he had approached was plainly visible. Despite knowing that if they served him well they would get their fix, this ghoul knew, just as well as any of the others by now, that he wasn’t averse to killing them on a whim. Fortunately for this man, one of the other servants had already caught him at a bad time and Laurence wasn’t planning on having the servants carry out another body tonight. Especially not when the humans had arrived.

Leading the man towards his brother’s room, he knocked but didn’t await an answer before he walked in. It wasn’t like Cadeon would get out of bed to open the door for him anyway. If he was even awake to hear the knock. Finding his brother in bed was expected. Seeing that he was actually awake and reading was a pleasant surprise.

“It's time you got out of bed, Cade. I even brought you a gift.” Grinning and showing a bit of fang in the process, Laurence pushed the ghoul further into the room, noticing the man relax marginally once he realized why he’d been required. "You look famished and I don’t want you passing out from hunger later this evening.”

Hopefully Cadeon would take more than a few sips like he usually did. Though it might help him stay awake during the night, Laurence wanted to make sure his brother had enough that he wouldn’t have to worry if he didn’t check on him for a few days. They were both going to have their hands full with their new donors and it was likely that the donors were going to be more inclined to try to escape than cooperate, and if Cadeon let his donor get away, or do worse, because he was too tired to do more than weakly protest, that wouldn’t do them any good.

”I’m not going to leave until you’ve had your full, so the faster you do this, the less lecturing you’ll hear from me.” Which would probably be a good thing since Laurence wasn't in a lecturing mood and Cade didn't like being lectured to begin with.

Moving towards the bed, Laurence plucked the book from Cade's hands, looking at the title and flipping through a few pages, unable to quite focus enough on what he was seeing. "I don't know how you can read at a time like this," he muttered under his breath. He was too upset about this entire situation to stay focused on anything for long. Sometimes, he envied his little brother.

                      • As Cadeon sat up and the ghoul stepped forward, Laurence started to really focus on the book in front of him. As long as Cade was getting his fill, he wouldn’t have to stand around and watch. Besides, even though he’d had his fill prior to checking on his younger brother, the ghoul he’d snacked on had hardly been satisfying and it left him craving more... but there was no guarantee that his donor would be so cooperative.

Eyes focusing on the words in front of him, Laurence gave a quiet sigh of annoyance when he realized that the book Cade had been reading was written in Russian. Unlike some of his siblings, he could only understand a small number of languages, and Russian wasn’t one of them. He’d never had a reason to learn it and so had never taken the initiative. And now that they were in Midred, he didn’t see himself needing the language any time soon. Couldn’t Cade have just picked up a book that was a little easier to understand?

Tossing the book back on the bed only seconds after realizing what was on the page, Laurence waited for his brother to finish up so they could go greet their guests, but he didn’t have too long to wait.

”You should really take more, Cade. There are more ghouls where he came from, and father would kill me if something happened to you,” he said in a bored tone, not willing to admit in front of the ghoul that he would personally be upset if something happened to his younger brother while they were here.

Eyeing the ghoul, Laurence idly wondered if his younger brother would lose that remarkable restraint he seemed to be able to show if the ghoul’s blood was suddenly spilled all over the room. Would it be enough to awaken Cadeon’s bloodlust or would he hardly bat an eyelash? Luckily for the ghoul, Laurence wasn’t in the mood to test his theory or deal with the mess.

”But if that’s really all you’re going to have, I can't force you to finish him off. I'm not too thrilled to have humans wandering around."
