a year is good enough to have a sense of what you're sexuality is. As soon as puberty hits, there should be some awareness of sexual attraction sometimes people know before puberty. My ex had his sexuality hit him in a dream when he hit puberty. just one night he had a creepy gay dream and never thought of women sense.
