Haiku Chain

[Takagawa Yan]

Hm, this might die as soon as I post this... but it's worth a try.

Haiku - traditional Eastern poetry in a syllable style of 5/7/5, though not everyone sticks to the pattern that strictly.

I will post one here, and hopefully someone will continue the chain by posting with another. Feel free to critique if you must.

Five centimeters
the distance between our hands
a mile in my heart

The heat of today
makes my eyelids fall like leaves.
I am drifting off...

Another layer
stripped from a stone reflection.
Can you see me now?

(I think this turned into a duel?)

A cry in the dark-
captured, you cannot move as
new life takes a breath

I try hard, yet still
I am but an amateur
not quite a poet

My inkwell is dry.
Must we kill another bird
to finish this tale?

a somber morrow
awaits the wretched villains
who would steal life's gift

My cousin was hailed
as one of the war heroes.
He now fights taxes.

Even mountains fall...
sometimes it is best to say
"Shikata nai"

The blind beggar scoffed
and did not cross the river
to Eldorado

Destruction's nature-
even the great Atlantis
now lies in ruins

Yet Atlantis stays
a living specter, haunting
the minds of poets.

A hand was reaching
for the specters of his past
as ancient eyes closed.
