if that isn't the case think it's stupid to take their money for a while
but I guess since they're bitter they just want to hurt them

Cases like your mum's aren't the majority.
But there's definitely plenty of government aid for women going through that.
Personally I think it's contradictory to rely on someone you no longer want to be with.

I thought you can't get alimony unless you're together for twenty years, and if you're going to split property 50-50 you need to have at least somewhat nice things (which a lot of young couples don't have). Now child support a parent should always be willing to put out, they helped create the baby, they damn well better pay for the little one.

The maximum is different for each state, but it's at least similar to a 20k a year salary.
Also, I don't think it's cold at all. Maybe it's a because of double standards that you think so,
but I think it's an equal system if we simply did it that way.

Yeah, there could always be cases of private agreements.
But once you bring courts into it, there's additional clashing views, double standards...
Also, juries tend to listen to the one who plucks the heart strings most.
People are aware of the flaws in the system, and many take full advantage of it.

I never once said all marriages/divorces are the same. You didn't say I did either, but the caricature of my opinions you described are pretty clearly one of ignorance and bias.
I said that divorce laws and the fact that divorce is no longer taboo are the leading causes of divorce. How is that a non sequitur? Studies show a successful marriage is more likely to happen later on in life, yet people are marrying younger and younger.
How does that not follow in your mind?
