Outage from database upgrade fixed

Apologies for the outage earlier.  We're conducting a large database upgrade and ran into some hiccups along the way.  We will see a lot more stability across the site once the upgrade is completed.
Aquarium bug fixed

For those who were experiencing problems seeing your fishes in Aquarium, the related bug had been fixed.  We have also fixed fishtank commenting if you want to say hi at your friend's tank. smile
Database migration and what to expect in the near future

We welcomed 2024 by announcing in our Company Update that a big project was in the works: Database migration.

Because it should take care of the occasional 504 errors that pop up whenever one of our 25 servers breaks for [insert reason here].


Over the weekend, as Lanzer discussed in his latest Work Diary entry, we began a significant database upgrade that would allow us to move forward in this project:

Our months long database upgrade is starting the important phase of migrating data to updated servers. Once that is done, data can then be migrated to the cloud based database services. There should be no interruption of services during the coming weeks as we finish on these tasks.


Related to this upgrade, we experienced a brief outage this morning just before 10:00 AM PDT. We’re also aware of the numerous reports coming in about expired offers not releasing held funds back to accounts, and our developers are actively investigating to both find and fix the core issue and to refund the missing Gold/Platinum.

Our developers are hard at work to support the smoothest transition possible, but no upgrade of this magnitude will be without issues. Our staff is keeping an eye out for reports of new bugs and errors and flagging them up to our developers as quickly as we see them.

We may encounter more bumps along the way and we appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue this process.

How you can stay informed about Database Migration and other ongoing/upcoming projects:

How you can report bugs/glitches that you encounter:
  • When a bug/glitch is experienced on Gaia, we ask that you report it through our Bug Report & Technical Support forum. Please check the front page of the forum for a thread that reports the issue you're having and contribute to it if needed before creating one of your own; it's more helpful for our staff who are gathering information about an active bug, and for our developers who are reviewing reports and updating those affected, to work from a single thread. Staff and volunteers regularly check this forum to help troubleshoot issues that affect individual Gaians, to flag up bugs to our developers, and to keep an eye out for urgent problems.

  • The more specific you're able to be about your issue, the better. Examples, links, steps to reproduce, screenshots, etc., can all be helpful toward explaining and identifying your issue.   • The Ask the Staff/Pre-AtS threads are not the designated places to report bugs, and should not be used as a replacement for our BR&TS forum. While we do see and pass along bugs that have been brought up at these events, they're not a great place to gather information about or help you troubleshoot what you're experiencing.
Regarding marketplace offers that were lost:

Apologies for having your offers not showing up in the system since they were made between yesterday and this morning.  They're resting in our backup system right now and we're working fast to copy the data over to the new database.  We will inform you as soon as the data is restored. 
Runway theme changes for March 28th contests

For most of today, Runway's themes for tomorrow had reverted to automatic selections. As our developers made progress with today's database update, the themes have changed again - back to the manual selections that were scheduled for entry today.

If you have already entered one or more of tomorrow's contests, please immediately (before the deadline at 11:59pm PST tonight) review and update your entry with consideration to the theme changes:

To remove an entry that you have already submitted, click "Cancel" from the submission page. If you then wish to re-enter the updated theme, you can do so once your existing entry has been canceled.

Refunds issued to those who entered Runway on March 26th

One of the errors we encountered with today's database update is that, for contests in the voting stage, most of the entries were missing from the entry pool for the majority of the day. For this reason, we have issued refunds to those who paid GCash or Gold/Platinum to enter a theme.

We have granted a Mythrill Coin Package (25 Platinum) to Gaians who entered the Gold theme, Welcome to the World of . . . . This can be redeemed from the inventory for 25 Platinum (or 250000000 Gold).

50 Gaia Cash has been refunded to those who paid this amount to enter the GCash theme, Blue Exorcist Cosplay; this can be confirmed through the Gaia Cash History page.

We were unfortunately unable to restore any free weekly entries that were used to enter the Gaia Cash contest, and regret any disappointment this outcome has caused.
More data restored for giftin, personas, and fishing

The missing personas made on the 26th, as well as avatar data for new users should be restored now.

Additionally, gifts made on the 26th and 27th can now be opened.

Lastly, we restored most of the fishing progress, but a few of you might had lost a few games worth of data because of the limitation of the recovery program.  Apologies for that.

We're sorry for this large disruption.  We're in the process of moving all our individual database to a large cloud based system that will be much more stable in the long run.  After all the upgrade is done, we should no longer see the random database errors that show up occasionally causing downtime.
Update on lost marketplace offers/Expired offers

Hey all,

The process of copying offers data to the new database has completed. While most of this data has been fully restored, we are aware of outstanding reports of offers that expired during March 26th-27th that still haven't refunded the reserved Gold/Platinum.

We will need to investigate and assist on an individual level, and ask that those whose expired offers were directly affected by the database update, and still haven't refunded the reserved gold, make a post in this thread before April 11th at 11:59PM PDT.
Angel Subscription Fixed

For those who had trouble starting a new Angel Subscription, the issue had just been fixed.  Thank you for your support!

zOMG Easter Event Fixed

Apologies for the error that caused the easter event to only happen in Barton Town.  The bug had just been fixed on the Blood Bat server right now, and tomorrow the bug will be fixed on all servers moving forward.  The easter event in zOMG will end on April 25th.
Giftbox bug fixed

For those who have gift boxes that cannot be opened, the bug had just been fixed.  Sorry for the long wait for this bug to be fixed.
