To be honest, the first piece of advice I can offer you is…by practicing. So, you create your original character and then throw him or her into the fray, learning all the way.
You can also improve by considering the criticisms of more experienced fighters. There are a lot of them out there.
Finally, listen to the Pokémon theme song, then battle every day, to claim your rightful place! xd
