Well.. That's actually a very interesting (but maybe boring to you) story.
I have blonde hair, so my Portuguese friend made fun of me for being 'so sweet', and that having honey for hair really suited me. Portuguese for Honey is Mel, so he started calling me mel...
I also have japanese friends and American friends who speak japanese, and Mel put into japanese syllables is 'Meru'.
That translated back to english would be Mer/Merr, so... Merr stuck. XD;
