They might have earned some cool points from me if he WERE canonically gay. But Squenix isn't exactly one for making brave or risky gestures, like making the main character of a multi-million dollar project a minority figure. So they just made him look and act like that, while heavily winking and nudging that he's tapping Penelo. "No, seriously."
