How rude. What a terrible experience. People are ********.

-Do you think customers act the way they do because they know they can get away with it? (Always remember: the customer is always right!)
Totally. We live in an age where acting that way gets them free s**t. So they act like ********.

-Have you ever dealt with a mean customer? Were you insulted? Did you continue to smile?
Yes, plenty of times. I worked at Dairy Queen for years. I was a shift leader for a few of those years. Customers can be total s**t heads. I continued to smile up to a point. When customers crossed a line (cussing at me was usually where I drew the line) I stopped taking their s**t.

-Have you ever been the mean customer?
Only once, when the girl at Hardee's took an attitude with me. I ordered my sandwich with no mayo, they put mayo on it, and I brought it back and politely ask for them to fix it. But she had an attitude and told me I ordered wrong and she wasn't going to fix it. That was the only time I was not very polite to an employee.

-Have you seen someone getting upset with an employee for almost no reason at all?
All the time. I try to be super nice to them after the awful customer is done.

-Do you think they would act the same way toward you if you were not behind the counter/working? (Like the eye rolling, talking like you can't do anything right...etc.)
Sometimes. Some people are just shitty people. But if they can't get anything from me, there's really no reason to treat me that way.

-In your opinion, is it okay to be the rude customer?
Not usually. Unless they treat you shitty, like the girl at Hardee's.

I forgot people got free things when they got mad enough! That makes sense...
And as for the burger...wow. There should have been no problem. What...a...jerk!!!
Shitty people everywhere. It's a fact we all know by now...but sometimes it catches you off guard. =(

Rordan said that my souffle has sunk so low that it would take an elite team of divers to recover it. Im still gonna eat it. Don't tell him, 'kay?

I won't tell him! xD

My roommate used to work at a supermarket in a really s**t part of our city.
Anyway, a really s**t part of town, in that someone was viciously assaulted outside it this week.
(There are 4 supermarkets in the city you don't want to set foot in; this was one of them)

Her customer stories were ridiculous, that they would come in and be throwing stuff at her, calling her stupid, and the worst off was the management there would blame the employees every time the customer complained, even if it was something outside her control.
She got yelled at and called incompetent because some item wasn't on file, which was the management's fault, not her.
Some customer told her to go kill herself once.
Another customer told her he was going to kill himself because she asked him if he wanted a bag.(there's a bag charge here).
Someone blamed her for their Visa being declined and told her(a cashier) it was her duty to call Visa and fix the credit card.

Now she works at a Second Cup in a better part of town, and she rarely gets yelled at.

It's often an area thing, I think.

Some customers are right to be angry. Most don't. And most take it too far.
You have a right to be angry when your items aren't scanning at the proper price. You don't have a right to yell at an employee making minimum wage who has no control over prices about it.

Wow...you guys must live in a very strange area...

I have heard about customers telling employees to kill themselves...I guess that's a new mean thing to say or something. =I
Incompetent because something was not on file. Jerk.
A customer said he was going to kill himself? That's scary. Wow!
It was your friend's duty to call Visa and fix it...??? LAZY PEOPLE! I would have been embarassed if my Visa was declined. More than likely, there's not enough money to pay for the transaction. It shows how little shame people know. =(

Your friend seems to be patient. If someone told me to kill myself or told me to fix THEIR card....I would find the customer working one day and give him/her a hard time. Then I'll get away with it because I'm the customer lolzzz

Hopefully it is an area thing. =)
Hopefully...

Managers need to be more aggressive in dismissing problem customers, in my opinion. If someone wants to throw a temper tantrum like a 5 year old in need of a nap and excuse it because "he's just some minimum wage high schooler," then they need to get the hell out.

Half the time, people are just playing mad to get free stuff.

Interesting opinion!
And yeah...People are probably playing mad. (Or they are naturally angry people) and they get to get the free stuff. Makes sense...

I've worked enough retail and service industry stuff to know when someone's legitimately upset and just playing because they think the manager's a pushover. Normally the manager is. You'd be surprised how many go into a store looking for an argument just so they can get something for cheaper, or even free.

Yes. Yes they act that way because if you talk back you get a stern reprimand, and can get fired. Them however? At most they have to leave the store. Only people actually damaging the store get banned from it. The customer isn't right, and barely can actually get things right.

No, I don't work with people. So the rest of the questions are moot.

Quote:
-Have you ever been the mean customer?

Lets see, anxiety, nope. I even once dropped a bag of sugar, and told the you know guys, stuck around it, and helped to clean it up. At a party I helped with the clean up even if I didn't have to. My mother taught me better then to be mean to people..... that don't deserve it.

Yes.

Quote:

Nope, not really. Most people are condescending to work force people because 'only retards' get that job. Luckily though in my area that is mainly tourists who act like that.

Quote:
-In your opinion, is it okay to be the rude customer?

I can be because I don't work in places with people. But no, you can't be rude because you can loose your job so that the person can feel better at night because they were a douchbag. Or something like that.

Have you ever worked in a fast food joint? Its horrible.

Hmm...you don't work with people?

And yes. The condescending attitude.
I never really thought about that.
...but...you would expect the rich looking ones to act like that.

And I have not worked at a fast food joint. I have seen enough to not want to work at one. One guy, with his lovely, scratchy voice, waddled over to the cashier and told him that he didn't fix his taco right and he demanded to see the manager. (I remember that it looked like he ate half of it.) The manager took forever to get out there and I guess the guy got himself another taco...when he could have been civilized and asked for another one. It seems like the louder customers eat fast food. Yuck.

Yeah, I've worked in food service entirely too long. I all ready wasn't a huge fan of "the masses" beforehand, and now, needless to say, my tolerance for people has pretty well bottomed out.

-Do you think customers act the way they do because they know they can get away with it?
Yes. So much yes. People know that there's nothing you can do about how they choose to treat you. Not if you want to keep paying your bills at least. So people who just like to screw with others get to do so all they want. While other people who have no idea what it's like to work that sort of job decide that if the name of your workplace is printed on your uniform, then you must be an idiot. Personally I feel that everyone should have to work some form of entry level customer service at some point in their life. If just for perspective.

-Have you ever dealt with a mean customer? Were you insulted? Did you continue to smile?

I've literally been cussed out before because one of our lights were out. And, weirdly, that woman was by no means one of the worst I've dealt with. Which is actually a little sad. One of the more annoying incidents was a woman who asked for a cup for water, then promptly filled it with a soda. When I let her know that a soda would be a dollar, she proceeded to tell me to mind my business and try to shoo me away. I jokingly said that it kinda was my business, saying that my boss kinda pays me for that sort of thing. At which point she said that I was being incredibly rude, and should be reprimanded, then demanded to see my manager. This woman carried on about my 'terrible attitude' and 'poor customer service' saying, essentially, that I should be fired. Some insane wench tried to get me fired because I caught her stealing.

-Have you ever been the mean customer?

Not that I can remember, no. I know I've been difficult in the past. Namely trying to find something that I can't describe well/don't know the name for it. In which case I usually start the conversation with "Okay, so I'm going to be difficult, and I apologize..."

-Have you seen someone getting upset with an employee for almost no reason at all?

All the time.
I actually intervened once at Walmart because some jag-off was screaming at the returns lady for not giving him cash for his pile of electronics he had no receipts for. She tried telling him she could get him Walmart gift cards, which evidently wasn't good enough because he just kept screaming at her. Eventually security came and escorted him out.

-Do you think they would act the same way toward you if you were not behind the counter/working?

Absolutely not. People tend to try be so out of everyone's way, and polite generally. Someone bumps into you on the bus, "Sorry!" Walk right into you while you're running an order, they'll just do a little acknowledging grunt. Someone in an aisle says something to you, you don't hear them and ask them to repeat it, they do. Ya do that taking someones order and they do the real loud, drawn out, dramatic enunciation, followed up with a snippy "Oookkaay??"

-In your opinion, is it okay to be the rude customer?
Rude? No, never. I completely understand people being frustrated or annoyed when something gets messed up. But that's entirely different than being rude about it. Yelling and getting huffy shouldn't ever get anyone anywhere. We're all taught as children how to use our words to deal with people.Whether or not someone is currently on the clock shouldn't affect that. Moreover, do you think that the random person working the register owns the place? No? Then why the hell do you think they can change the store policy? They're not going to risk their damn job to save you a buck.

If only more people thought like that...
I did not know about the workplace on shirt thing! At least...now I know. I guess we are all supposed to be working with them...at their jobs. Huh. Huhuhuhuh! HAHAHA!

And it's good that you intervened! Some people are just...dumb. And ridiculous! The closest I've ever been to "intervening" was a week ago at *gasp* Walmart. One woman was giving a worker a hard time about a watch at the jewelry section. She didn't even know what she wanted, but she was like, "THE GREY WATCH!!!" and something about you guys had it on sale. My sister nudged me and told me to look. The worker tried to explain that the watches sold out and the woman said something about they had it behind the counter. The employee checked and the woman started DEMANDING LOUDLY for the manager. By then I busted up laughing and pointed at the woman. Called her a dumb broad; can't she hear herself??? The laughter was contagious; my sister joined me and the woman turned a weird red color and hurried off. I think I want to do that again. It felt good.

I gotta get back to this post in a few hours
I'm back! Okay so I was thinking about the part where you posted that people usually stay out of the way and are...polite.
Maybe it's where I live, but I cannot agree with the polite thing lol
But yeah. You are onto something. It's probably the uniform and being watched by the manager that makes them act that way. I can imagine that some might be actually nice...once you are not behind the counter! D:<

I hope I didn't sound like I intervene alot. Hahaha That was actually the first time. I was in a terrible mood and the woman was odd! So...very...odd. That won't be the last time, though. That is my decision lol

Yeah, typically I don't get myself involved in those sort of things, but this guy was going way over the line. I pretty much told him to back the hell off. And asked why he seemed to think that she was in charge of Walmart and could subsequently ignore policy like that.
The girl looked grateful, and after the guy got taken off, we both laughed a bit about it. I don't get how people don't see how asinine they're being in those situations.

They know they can get away with it because in many cases the employee can't risk their job by arguing with a customer.
I think in many cases the customer dehumanizes the people working there. To them the employees couldn't manage to get a better job besides serving them and therefore you are a lesser person in their eyes. There's a stigma that if you work in fast food you must of dropped out of highschool or just have no motivation.
When I was working in fast food I had a few instances where a mother would tell her children 'see this is why you finish high school, so you don't have to work here!" I graduated with a 3.5 and am attending college.

I noticed that you used the plural form of "instance."
Wow. What a whore. I wonder if she has a spectacular job that pays $20+ an hour...
And there you go! =D
Graduated with an awesome GPA!!!!!!!!!! blaugh YEAH!!!! SHOW 'EM!!!

I have worked a lot of retail and fast food.Currently back in college for my career, so hopefully my problem customers will change. Here are some of the worst I've had to endure:

1) While working at McDonalds in high school, I was on morning shift. On a Sunday. I hated those shifts for two reasons. The first, we were right off the highway and always busy, even right at opening. The second, being Sunday, we had two busloads of church goers waiting. I still haven't found out which church had weekly breakfasts at McDonalds, but they were there every week. Anyway, that means we were busy. And we just opened so we did not have the food prepared to feed everyone at once. Since I was 18 at the time, I had to work cashier and the hashbrowns (I was the only one beside my manager who was old enough to work the oil vats). I had just pulled up a cage of hasbrowns the customer before my problem child. He gets up, looks at the hashbrowns, and tells me he wants fresh ones. I tell him those just came up, and he says, "NO! I want fresh ones! Those have been sitting there!" I'm young, and I get flustered easily. So, I go to make him fresh hashbrowns and grab the wrong basket. Instead of grabbing the one that had not come out of the oil vat less than five minutes ago, I grab the one that is still hot and gave myself a second degree burn on my hand when I went to flip the top up. I screamed, my manager came running out, and the people in line immediately said I was bullied and burned myself. The guy did apologize, but I had burns that blistered on my hand for a while.

2) Same McDonalds. Now, I can't remember the details. This was nearly 2 decades ago, but it was dinner rush. The guy in line wanted something and for some reason, couldn't get it in the time he wanted. Anyway, he starts yelling at me. Again, I get flustered and I start to cry. I'm also short, so I probably looked younger. Same manager comes out and tells me to go to the freezer. I can hear him berating the guy for making me cry. I got a small break until I could calm down.

3) Years later, I'm now at Target. I work there part time and I'm in college full time. It's mother's day. In fact, it turns out to be the last mother's day I spend with my mom, so it really stuck in my head. Now, due to people abusing policy, when someone buys anything that requires an ID, we have to do a 100% ID check. That's on certain games and alcohol. Doesn't matter if my grandma rose from the dead to buy some wine, I would have to card her zombie a**. Anyway, this elderly man came through and was buying (I'm guessing for his grandson) one of those ultra-violent rated mature shoot 'em up games. I have to card him. I can't move past the ID screen until I card him. That's how the computers are. I explain this to him, and he goes off on me. He tells me I'm stupid, that I'm a horrible person, that I obviously can't tell he's old enough to buy this game, that he's not going to give me his card, and that I should kill myself because I'm so useless. This time, I don't cry, but I do stop smiling. Anyone who knows me knows that it's not a good thing when I stop smiling. It means I'm about to lose my temper. My manager comes over and uses her code to bypass the system, and he's all nice to her. Once she leaves, he turns back to me, takes his game, and tells me once more to kill myself.

Those were the worst. Now, I've had others over things like people moving pricing labels, coupon problems, WIC/Foodstamps, and the like. But those three were the worst.

As for if I've ever been that customer, once or twice, but I always apologize for being rude once I've calmed down over whatever it was. I tell them, I know I was jerk. I'm sorry.
So...do you think it's okay to be the rude customer?

I don't think that's ever okay.

Do you welcome a customer's unnecessary emotions/behavior?

No, I would ignore them immediately because I shouldn't have to deal with that working in public service.

Do you think customers act the way they do because they know they can get away with it? (Always remember: the customer is always right!)

Yes, sometimes.

Have you ever dealt with a mean customer? Were you insulted? Did you continue to smile?

Yes on the phone when I worked in a Credit Card Centre. I was insulted and I definitely was not smiling lol

Have you ever been the mean customer?

No, I've always been polite and soft spoken.

Have you seen someone getting upset with an employee for almost no reason at all?

Yes in the bank I've worked previously.

Do you think they would act the same way toward you if you were not behind the counter/working? (Like the eye rolling, talking like you can't do anything right...etc.)

Yes probably. Especially wealthy customers who believe their money status gives them power or something.

In your opinion, is it okay to be the rude customer?

Never is okay to be rude.

Any comments, questions, ideas, thoughts?

The employee and customer should always be courteous to each other.

Honestly, I do believe that some customers treat employees (especially those in retail ) badly because they know they can project their bad day onto them and get away with it. They know the employee cannot do anything but take their abuse and it makes them feel powerful.

I’ve had one do it to me, it was awful. The lady was so upset with me over something that was completely ridiculous and there was nothing I could do about it but take her anger and go cry afterwards. As I work in retail , I know better than to treat someone like that . Likewise, I know that if I see someone being treated that way I’m gonna stand up for the employee because to do that so you feel better about yourself or to get a free item is wrong.

The burn sounded awful, the manager was awesome, and why would someone would go off...if all they had to do was show their ID card. I thought you HAD to have an ID card with you at all times! And the kill-yourself-thing is ridiculous. I read about it online and I am really thinking people are telling each other that for fun or something. It's stupid, ridiculous, improper, rude and disgusting.
Thank you for sharing your three stories. =(
Customers should know better. No one is that mindless.

You're welcome lol
I think many people don't know how to be kind anymore and therefore they don't know courtesy.
I notice that some wealthy people are like that in the bank I worked at.
Misery loves company haha only time I've gotten genuinely upset with an employee was when I left my credit card on the table at a restaurant for like 30 minutes waiting for the waitress to come get it but she never showed up. I finally went to the front desk and they were like "Oh sorry she didn't tell you? You have to pay up front." but I didn't scream at her or anything just got really upset because they charged us an automatic gratuity fee due to the amount of people at our table and she was a poor waitress so I said they needed to take the tip off the bill. I feel like that was justified. Otherwise it depends on so many outside factors. Having a bad day, trying to scheme their way into a discount, just being a douche in general etc
