Everyone is telling me that it'll still be hot in September, but I'm kind of excited to eat mooncake there...dunno why but it feels like it would be more real to eat mooncake in China.

Haven't really noticed too much Mainland influence with the exception of the ultra long theme song. Openings are usually 1 min for TVB, but Mainlands are somewhere around 1:30 to 2 mins which is what this one is like. Threw me off when I tried to skip past it the first ep. Maybe it's the way Cantonese is spoken, but there were so many parts of dialogue where my brain was like "please don't use 70s Canto slang in a costume period"

I haven't celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival in China so far. Would be nice for a change =D CNY feels better in China too.

Maybe Mainland was only providing the funds I don't know. Seems legit to let TVB handle the production. Haha 70s? For the younger folks that's ancient already. Maybe that's why xD

You know a couple of years back I went in December, Christmas was awesome in Hong Kong. Their decorations were just so nice and different. Here I swear they use the same decorations until someone complains....20 something years later lol.

My disdain for the younger generation and their lack of attention for details. And yet if there's a water bottle or some other blooper, the younger generation will catch that in a heartbeat while I blindly ignore that someone is wearing a watch XD I'm a hypocrite.

Christmas in HK sounds really wonderful. I like the decorations in Asia way more in general. Also their interior designs are great. Even for big chains.

Hahaha I guess it's just different details we're looking at. Whatever we're more familiar with.

I suppose they have a better budget and care more about aesthetics than companies here. But hard to say, the world is constantly changing including people's values.

I was reading some article about an old veteran TVB actor was saying that the people working at TVB these days "don't care" the same way they used to. He said that actors worked better together and cared about the end product. Nowadays it's about getting it done and on to the next project.

Not necessarily budget...I was also thinking of bars and small restaurants. Which don't have a massive budget. I'd say they do care more about aesthetics. Or the customers do.

That might be true. And TVB being famous for paying less doesn't help. With declining movie biz over there maybe the young actors don't see a reason to stand out. And the younger generations tend to be less responsible that's true.

Having just been there I can confirm they all truly care about how things look. Very beautiful but sometimes still lacks substance.

Yes the small potatoes at TVB tend to starve, and even some of the more well known ones aren't really getting what they're really worth. With the way the culture is in HK these days where it's all about making money, I can see how many of them wouldn't put their heart and soul into something that isn't getting them anywhere. I was watching a TV show that Chapman TO was in and he was saying that Asians are a bit different in the sense that they've been a culture that has gone through generations of starvation. When you're starving you don't have time for dreams and ideals, you do what you can to survive. Whereas more richer countries that haven't been starving are more likely to pursue their dreams.

I never knew this thread existed but I'm really glad it does! LOL! I grew up with TVB series and I really loved Dicky Cheung and Bennie Chan when they played Sun Wukong in Journey to the West (1996) ; o ;/ It's definitely my favorite series of all time despite it being almost the same age as myself. All the small details TVB puts into their series during that era were just amazing!

Hey there! I'm sure you've noticed that the TVB portion of this isn't quite what it used to be XD but we definitely still have a place in our hearts for TVB. Especially as you put it "during that era" haha.

Are you watching any of the more current series?

True. They look great on the surface. But quality usually isn't top grade.

He does have a point. It's all about priorities. And if you have nurtured a habit for generations, it won't just go away over night. And it's also true that art has usually been reserved for the wealthy. If you think back to to earlier times, artists needed a patron to make a living a do their work. And nowadays a lot of art is being funded by the state.

Oh and I started watching an old drama again xD Shades of Darkness. Been searching for it forever and finally found it on YouTube =D

It's funny though living in North America, and especially in Van where we struggle with both issues. On the one end, we grew up with comfort, rights, personal development, but in the recent decade or two, the cost of living has become so high that everyone struggles to survive. Just read a study on how the millennial generation has the least ability to commit to a job and take responsibilities. I can say one thing though, if in this day and age you want to be an artist of any kind, you definitely need the backing of some big company to survive...and even then.

Haha, I find myself watching some older dramas myself. Although I think some of them are even from the early 2000s. So glad Youtube brings us so much entertainment XD

Yeah it seems like it is the same everywhere. The baby boomers generation had it better in some way. Everything was in a upstream and they had a change when they wanted to. Now it's getting harder to buy real estate etc.
Yeah commitment (or rather the lack of) defines our generation yes. We grew up with a lot of possibilities. Too much if you want to say so.
Yeah but that leaves you with the dilemma of not being able to fully do what you really want to. You have to follow their agenda more or less.

Hehe yeah. I've been watching old dramas only lately. ROCH 95. State of Divinity 1996 etc. xD
