In Detective Comics, they have been doing some back up stories lately drawn by Szymon Kudranski, and if you have read the Penguin mini series or have checked out any of the recent spawn (or not), I recomend this guy (even if it is something to just look at once). his style is featured more on the dark and grotesque side of things with a realistic feel to it. And if that isn't your kind of thing then that is alright too.
I like the dark. The whole 80's period of Green Arrow, the JLD (those teeth....), etc. Are Spawn comics good?
Define 'back up stories.'
Sometimes Spawn is good, depends on the creative team. I grew up with spawn so I am not really going to walk away from it. right now with the current creative team of Todd McFarlane, Jon Goff and Szymon Kudranski is doing pretty good. not the best, but much better than a lot of issues have been. A good jumping on point is either at issue #185, or #201 (219 comes out tomorrow).
the back up stories are just an extra story in the comic, usually done by a different artist and writer than the main story of the book (sometimes done by the same artists and writers of the main story).
I like the idea of the back up stories. Might check it just for those. Todd McFarlane sounds familiar, who is he?
He is the main creator of Spawn, He worked on the Amazing Spider-man. Before he left Marvel to found image with the other artists (Jim Lee, Jim Valentino, Marc Silvestri, Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld, Whilce Portacio, and Chris Claremont) he wrote and drew for the title Spider-Man.
Maybe this will help explain things better than I can.
