That's how I got into anime...unlike in Western superhero shows where there's a clearly defined bad guy.....
Although, they are trying to give bad guys a bit of a dimension now--I love what Chris Nolan did for the Joker...you know he's crazy but, he's kinda intelligent-crazy, which is really scary...

I think the only really "bad" people there are the Al Tharmen....but I'm sure the author will twist it again somehow...
