One reason why Odysseus suffers the most is cause of his countless trials. One of Odysseus’s nick names is “man of man wiles”. Odysseus faces countless tasks including going to war for 10 years then being trapped on an island for 7 years. The mental impact must be huge plus he’s had many other threats that were life threatening which he has overcome. Odysseus’s family can’t compare to any of his trials which he has overcome.
Odysseus has also missed his son and his wife dearly. He left for war right after his son was born so he couldn’t raise his son. He has also missed his wife and always thought about her. For 7 years Odysseus was trapped on an island. All he could do was think about his family. This would probably multiply the pain by a huge amount. While Telemachus only misses his father and Penelope her husband Odysseus misses his wife and son.
The greatest pain Odysseus had to face was the death of his friends. Seeing your friends die is the greatest pain one could have because you spend your time with them always. At war he must’ve soon very vulgar things that could cause a great amount of pain. During one of his countless trials a horrible thing happened to Odysseus’s men at the Cyclops “So I spoke, but he in pitiless spirit answered nothing, but sprang up and reached for my comrades, caught up two and slapped them, like killing puppies against the ground and the brains ran all over the floor soaking the ground, then he cut them limb by limb and prepared supper” (17 cool . Watching your friends get severed and crushed would be so overwhelming to your mental stability is amazing and Odysseus can overcome that. His family can’t compensate for anything like that.
Odysseus has many dilemmas laid before him: the death of his friends, the pain of his family, and the countless trials. Odysseus has had more pain and suffering then his family in many ways and most especially in seeing his friends murdered. Odysseus overcomes all these hardships and proves to be the great man he is.
