LOVELESS Act I
Infinite in mystery is the gift of the Goddess

IC Personality: Cloud Strife is known to be a man of few words and even fewer expressions, this makes him a sort of enigma and in honesty it's how he prefers it. Throughout his life many things have happened in his life and most of them have shaped him into the man he is today. But in truth Cloud has always been a quiet person, ever since he was a young boy in Nibelheim and he was the one always picked on or mistreated by the townsfolk. This made him shut off from everyone but his mother, his father having died before he was born, and he never sought out companionship with another soul. That is except for Tifa Lockhart, a young girl who lived next to him. It was crush at first sight and young Cloud knew not what to do about this, so he simply hid it from everyone. Yet like the other children in the town, Tifa either laughed at him or ignored him all together, giving him a taste of life's cruelty in the 'love' department. At one point, when Tifa's mother had passed, she ended up in a comma that Cloud was blamed for. However, there was a ray of hope in Cloud for some sort of recognition by others, to prove them all wrong. That was joining the Elite militia SOLDIER, the best of the best in the ShinRa Corporations ranks. The best in the entirety of the Planet. So, wanting to be like his hero General Sephiroth, at the ripe age of 15 he set off for Midgar where he got his true taste of life's cruelty.

There is no hate, only joy

Here is where most people get confused about Cloud Strife, his days in SOLDIER are unaccounted for by anyone but himself and ShinRa employees. And when he is next seen by Tifa, who had moved due to an incident that destroyed Nibelheim, in Midgar he is even colder and closed off than before. But instead of just quiet and shy he's now cocky and sarcastic with a dark, dry sense of humor. The strange part is, their stories don't match up. Tifa believes they haven't seen each other in what is about 6-7 years, whereas Cloud says it's only been 5. Instead of confronting him she simply goes with it and with concern keeps an eye on him as much as she can. This is a complete 180 from when the two were kids but Cloud doesn't think so. In fact, the way he remembers it is that the two of them have been best friends since they were kids. She doesn't correct him like always and simply sticks by him as a friend.

LOVELESS Act III
My friend, do you fly away now?

But, the most life changing experience for Cloud, what truly shook him to his core, was when he met the only blooming flower of the Slums. The young Flower Girl who sold her beautiful flowers which she grew in a holy sanctuary in the Sector 5 Slums of Midgar. This meeting was chance and happened when Cloud had took up a new job in his new career-- Mercenary. He fell through the roof and from there it was never the same for him. Her name was Aeris [Aerith in some] Gainsborough, she was the adopted daughter of a simple woman in the slums who had found her by her birth mother's dying body at the train station. However, before her origins were revealed, Cloud knew she was special and found himself becoming her bodyguard. The deal was for one date, which Aeris herself teasingly offered as payment; and Cloud found himself agreeing despite only having met her a moment ago. Unlike others such as Barrett Wallace, leader of the 'terrorist' group AVALANCHE, who called him an uncaring a*****e, Aeris found ways to coax him out of his shell. She, with her childlike innocence and wonder about the world outside Midgar, would flirt with him subtly and tease him about the small things, getting him to smile for her. Along with Tifa, Barrett and a lion/wolf-like creature named Red XIII, Aeris joined Cloud in stopping ShinRa while trying to finally find more about her people: The Cetra. Aeris had more than just the gift of grace, beauty, and kindess, she had the gift to speak to the Planet, and she alone could hear it's cries of pain and suffering. With her sweet and loving heart she felt it's pain as if it were her own, and Cloud loved her all the more for it. For her he wanted to save the world.

LOVELESS Act IV
My friend, the fates are cruel
There are no dreams, no honor remains

My soul, corrupted by vengeance
Hath endured torment, to find the end of the journey

The wind sails over the waters surface
Quietly, but surely

Yes. Love... it was something he thought he had once held for Tifa when they were young. But it had faded in his time with SOLDIER, and left only a space for friendship with her in his heart. Yet this was something different. Cloud felt like he could be himself with Aeris, and while it terrified him to no end, he continued to grow closer to the Flower Girl and fell harder for her, unbeknownst to him, she was falling for him as well. This is evidenced by their date at the Gold Saucer, where the two play the main parts in the play and go for a ride on the Gondola Ride. This is where Cloud becomes confused, for Aeris begins comparing his personality with someone elses, from the sound of it, it's her former boyfriend that she spoke of to him in Midgar. Before he can ponder it really, she tells him she is searching for him... she wants to meet him. While this is confusing him, it's clear she is saying she wants to know him better... beyond the shell of cockiness and coldness. But, as with Cloud's luck, a shadow befalls the growing feelings. Sephiroth, who had been Cloud's hero and eventually turned on everyone after 'finding out' his mother Jenova was a Cetra, was out to destroy the world. When the group had entered the Temple Of The Ancients to stop ShinRa, Sephiroth, and find out more about Aeris' people, they discovered the Black Materia was inside. Managing to get it out, they didn't have it for long before Sephiroth took control of Cloud by using the Jenova cells in his body and made him give it up. Then, in a horrible display, caused Cloud to attack Aeris; something he hasn't forgiven himself for to this day. When he was pulled off her and blacked out, the last thing he remembered was the ringing of screams in his head fading... and her beautiful face smiling at him with all the forgiving compassion in her heart. It was then she came to him in his dreams, and told him she was going to the Forgotten Capital, the city in which her people once thrived. There she was going to stop Sephiroth, because she was the only person that could. This broke Cloud's heart and he tried dissuading her from trying to go, but she would have none of that and simply made him a promise. That after everything was over she would come back to him and the others. Before the dream faded, he watched her running through the Sleeping Forest and listened as Sephiroth spoke into his mind that they would have to stop her soon. After awaking, the ex-SOLDIER sprung up and the group gave chase to find their friend, who had run off after he blacked out. They quickly made their way into the Forgotten City and found Aeris in a secret underground passage. There she knelt on an altar in the middle of a serene pool of water, clearly praying for something. Cloud made the journey across the stepping stones but stopped once he was a few feet away, Sephiroth tried once more to take control of him and make him kill her. But he was stopped by his teammates voices; he tried to shake from his reviere and watched as Aeris looked up and opened her beautiful emrald eyes. Thier gazes met for the briefest of moments before a shadow, not unlike an Angel of Death and Pain's, fell on them and Masamune impaled Aeris through the torso.

"Aeris is gone. Aeris will no longer talk, no longer laugh, cry... or get angry... What about us... What are we supposed to do...? What about my pain? My fingers are tingling. My mouth is dry. My eyes are burning!" - Cloud after Aeris passed away in his arms

LOVELESS Act V
Even if the morrow is barren of promises
Nothing shall forestall my return
To become the dew that quenches the land
To spare the sands, the seas, the skies
I offer thee this silent sacrifice.

Her death had an impact on him unlike any other,,, even his mother's death did not weigh upon him like this. And this was when he was told by 'Jenova' that he was only a puppet and these feelings were false. For how can a puppet feel? But Sephiroth and his 'mother' were wrong. The 'puppet' fought back and sadly, with tears, went to lay her to rest. He walked into the middle of the water outside the shellhouse that housed the underground altar and let her gently float to the bottom. In the end though, Cloud finally avenged everyone ever wronged by ShinRa and Sephiroth by taking down the corporation and killing his one time hero. Aeris' help from the Lifestream had ensured their victory against Sephiroth and Meteor. However, this did nothing to bring back the beautiful flower of the Slums, and now he was left with no real purpose in this world, for vengeance was his. He became consumed with his grief and guilt and lived only to go through the motions, even going as far as living in Aeris' church, her flowers his companion most of the time. In honesty, he blamed himself for her death... blamed himself for not having been able to prevent it. In fact, before Sephiroth was finally defeated, it was one of he final catalysts for his mind breaking and everything he knew in his world shattered. For a short period of time he was paralyzed and mute, a vegetable trapped in the prison of his mind and distorted memories. With Tifa's help he recovered and figured out he had never been in SOLDIER fully, and most of the tales he had were of his deceased best friend from SOLDIER, Zack Fair. Coincidentally Zack had been the boyfriend Aeris had mentioned, and had seen in Cloud when she met him. His friend had died to protect him after they escaped the ShinRa Mansion in Nibelheim and Professor Hojo's experiements. It all becomes abundantly clear that due to the experiments and his psyche breaking, Cloud had adopted Zack's personality traits, gestures, and walk. The two even looked alike. It was after piecing his 21 years of memory back together and remembering his dead friend that he was able to shed the Zack persona and simply became quiet Cloud once more, only now his heart was weighed down by the death of Aeris.

"I'm... a puppet...?" - Cloud after Sephiroth/Jenova announced him as a Remnant

"So it was my weakness, Sephiroth's strong will, and the mako that made me who I am today." - Cloud after recovering from Mako poisoning and regaining his true memories

"I wasn't pursuing Sephiroth; I was being summoned." - Cloud again, after recovering from Mako poison and regaining his memories

"... Aeris. Aeris has already prayed for Holy." - Cloud after the group figured out she had been praying for Holy on the altar

"Tifa, I'm not fit to help anyone. Not my family, not my friends. Nobody..." - Cloud in Advent Children

"I think... I wanna be forgiven. Hmm... more than anything." - Cloud in Advent Children, when Aeris spoke to him through the Lifestream

"I was right. I'm no good to anyone. Vincent. What do you know about this?" - Cloud in Advent Children, after his failed attempt to save Denzel and Marlene

"But... I let you die." - Cloud in Advent Children, after Marlene safely escaped the Remnants

"Are sins... ever forgiven?" - Cloud in Advent Children, speaking to Vincent after Aeris said he should be the one doing the forgiving

"I pity you. You just don't get it at all. There's not a thing I don't cherish!" - Cloud in Advent Children, to the 'resurrected' Sephiroth

"Stay where you belong; in my memories." - Cloud in Advent Children, after defeating Sephiroth again

All he wanted... was to be forgiven...
