About
We’ll admit it: when we first saw the Michael Turner-designed, midriff-baring, mini-skirt wearing new version of Supergirl a few years ago, we were a little taken aback. Isn’t she supposed to be a teenage girl? Isn’t that sort of… I don’t know, illegal (not to mention really creepy)? But under the guiding hand of Sterling Gates and Jamal Igle, we’ve seen a girl struggling to fit in on her adopted homeworld of earth as well as in the Kryptonian society that she grew up in. She’s dealing with the death of her father and an overbearing mother. She’s trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life and what the future holds for her. In the most recent issue, she had to decide which Kryptonian Guild to join. Substitute “college” for “guild” and you see where we’re going with this: no matter what planet you’re on, teenage angst seems to be universal. Sometimes it feels a bit like we’re reading “Are you there, God? It’s me, Kara Zor-El.” But that’s a good thing.
