People call it the "Masamune II" to differentiate it from the un-powered-up Masamune you use earlier in the game. If the sword is more powerful than before, you have indeed obtained Frog's best weapon - the name is not supposed to actually change.

The Lavos Shell mimics the techniques of all those bosses in turn, but not their appearance - for instance, when it's in Dragon Tank mode, one bit absorbs fire and lightning while another stores energy and tramples, and the head fires lasers.

That's true, you do fight Lavos at the end of Black Omen, but if you weren't finished doing other things you can still do them by using the Gate just inside Lavos's shell to get back to the End of Time before fighting Lavos's next form.

Black Omen? Well, let me say that there is some really nice loot in there - also if you bring Ayla and charm any Ruminators you come across (I forget what they changed the name to in the new translation) you can amass a huge number of Megalixirs. Also, when fighting Boss Orbs and Sidekicks, kill the Sidekicks first - the Boss Orbs don't give any XP whereas you can get a nice sum of it from the Sidekicks if you can kill 'em before they run away. Also watch out for Tubsters, they counterattack really hard when you hit them, and don't hit them with Shadow attacks. Oh, and do Magus a favor and bring him with you for it - the final battle in Black Omen is really his fight, as illustrated by the more-interesting dialogue you get when he's with you and the fact that, if Magus is in your party, it plays his theme during the fight instead of the normal boss music.
