"My grandfather, Earl Dexter, died in January 2004. He had battled emphysema for years, eventually having to go on an oxygen tank. In the middle of 2003, however it was found that he had advanced lung cancer. This was the result of years of smoking. The cancer was so advanced that chemotherapy and radiation did nothing for him. The doctors gave him 6 months to a year to live. On January 14th 2004, I got the call that my grandfather had passed away. I broke down crying. I had never had a chance to say good-bye. He died in McAllen, Texas in his sleep with my grandmother by his side. A month later his ashes were brought up to my hometown and we had his funeral. His favorite song was played and everyone was in tears. 5 years later it's still hard without him. It's a first hand-account of the tragedy cancer can cause."
