My grandfather on my mother's side, Milton Ochs, died of pancreatic cancer a few months before I was born. I never knew him, and he never got to be a grandfather, and I wish that I had had the opportunity to know him.
My fifth grade teacher, Susan Taylor, is a survivor of melanoma, though she was not expected to live. I haven't seen her for a few years, but she inspired me to be the very best person I can be, and she always had a positive attitude, despite what happened to her.
I do not know Charlie Mingroni personally, but his story really inspires me. One of my favorite musicians, Jason Mraz, wrote a song called The Remedy about his close friend's battle with a kind of bone cancer. When I found out the meaning behind the song, I did a little research and became inspired by Charlie's story. He always viewed his disease as a gift, and never once doubted that he would survive, and he did.
