The Mind of Me
Reading is the magic key, it takes me where I want to be.

Footsteps could be heard smacking the wet pavement of the parking lot. Darks ran, her breath coming in rapid gasps, the sounds echoed across the flat surface. She kept close to the building, the wall rubbing up against her forearm as she made her way in the shadows. It was a rather light night, the moon was full and cast a white sheet on all that it was within view of. Darks looked over her shoulder as she came to the end of the wall. She hurriedly turned the corner and pressed herself up against the cold brick. She stood there trying to slow her breathing, her pursuer would hear. She closed her eyes and tightened her grip on the gun in her right hand.

Sweat plastered her bangs to her forehead, her black hair standing out against her pasty white skin. She listened intently, hearing approaching footsteps she opened her eyes and prepared herself for an attack. She took a deep breath as the footsteps slowed then threw herself into her attacker’s line of view. Her cloak spread out behind her as a gust of wind grabbed it and tried to tug it free. Darks lifted the gun and shot the man before her in the chest mercilessly. He fell to his knees, his own weapon falling from his grasp. His mouth fell open in a silent “O” of surprise. Darks sighed wearily and lowered her gun as his body went still on the ground. A black puddle surrounding his torso.

She lowered her gaze to her feet and ran a hand through her hair. She turned from the dead man and began walking, her eyes still lowered, the gun still in her hand. A stranger’s gun went off up ahead and Darks staggered backwards before falling on her a**. Her hand hit the ground and the impact forced the gun from her fingers and it spun free only to stop a foot away. “s**t,” She hissed through clenched teeth. She held a hand over the gunshot wound applying pressure to help stop the flow of blood from her shoulder. She had gone looking for trouble and found it. She admitted that she had had this coming silently to herself. “Well, I never thought I would see the day,” A pleasant male voice could be heard. Darks blood ran cold and her eyes glazed over, she hung her head. “Look at me.” He demanded and kicked her in the chest forcing her all the way back until her back was on the ground. Darks stared up at a man in his early twenties that had long blonde hair, his blue eyes piercing her own held her still. “Darks, my dear rose maiden. How I have longed to see the day that you were lower down than I, myself. So beautiful, yet so pitiful.” He crouched beside her and ran a finger across her cheek. She pushed his hand away from her and sat up. She quickly closed her eyes while placing fingers at her temples, she had sat up to fast and a raging headache was wearing down her thoughts.

Her eyes opened, the light green glowing eerily in the light of the moon that had shot out of the dark of the buildings around her. “Go to Hell Damien.” She muttered. Help had to be on the way, she could feel Leon through the blood tie urging her to hold on. Damien looked down on her in disgust. “Hell? I believe I’ve already been there because of you.” He pointed his gun at her thigh. Darks eyes widened in horror of pain to come and he shot her. She cried out and instinctively her body curled up for protection. The sound or a car approaching made Damien retreat with one last look at Darks over his shoulder. He ran off into the night just as Leon and the rest of the crew arrived. Before the vehicle even stopped Leon jumped out of the passenger seat and rushed to Darks side. She had passed out from pain and blood loss.

“Damn, you got yourself into trouble this time.” He said softly sadness dripping from his words. He looked down at her with a mixture of his own pain and love. Leon gently picked her up and carried her back to he car. Hunter stared at her in anger, “That b*****d Damien, I’m going to murder him ever so slowly and painfully.” Leon shot him a glare and he shut up. “I’m going to bring out the heavy artillery,” Hunter muttered thinking of his collection of torturous devices. He opened the door for Leon and helped him put Darks in the back. “Oh s**t!” Colton said as he watched. Darks was his sister, no one hurt his sister. His face contorted in anger and he turned away from the sight. The sound of another car made him snap to attention. A sleek, black corvette slid into place next to them. A woman got out of the passenger side and ran over to Darks pushing Leon and Hunter out of the way. The men stood back without a sound. This woman had an air of danger and authority about her. Out of the driver’s side came Charlie, one of Darks’ best friends. He pulled a gun and searched the surrounding area.

He was the typical quiet type as he approached Colton and put a hand on his shoulder. “I wish I could have been here sooner.” He said, Colton continued to stare straight ahead lost in his own thoughts of torture for Damien. Damien had been his best and only friend for several years. They had met just out of high-school. Colton blamed himself for not seeing Damien’s feelings for his sister, but there was nothing he could do to change the past. He sat down next to the first vehicle after making sure that Addica, the woman, was taking care of Darks’ wounds. He rested his head in his hands and cried. All those years together with Damien and he hadn’t even noticed that he was a different species from human altogether. He was a vampire.

Damien had attacked his sister one night turning her into one of his kind hoping that in-turn she would become his woman. He was wrong and Darks ran from him straight into the arms of his enemy, Leon. Darks fell in love with Leon enraging Damien further still. “She’ll be alright!” Addica announced happily. Colton looked up with a sigh of relief, he wiped the tears from his eyes and stood. He peered through the window at the resting Darks and smiled. His little sister, no one could take that away from him. She was here to stay, he was going to make sure of that with the help of friends.
