Monologue to my Best Friend’s “Mother” (A.K.A. The Devil Incarnate)





So… what you’re saying is I’m messed up huh? That’s it, am I right? I’m messed up even though I don’t drink or smoke, I sing in the church choir, I don’t have a boyfriend and I haven’t gotten pregnant. That makes me a bad and untrustworthy kid. What does that say about my mom? She sits up late at night when your daughter has a nightmare at our house and holds her, which I know you don’t do! Sorry, I’ll try to keep it down. But, just because my mom had only one child, that makes her inexperienced according to you because you had 11 children!

Have you noticed a trend in the way they’ve grown up? Anger problems, getting pregnant at 17 to get out of the house, bi-polar, depressed, should I keep going? Oh yeah! I seem to remember that one took a knife to the deacon at our church once. Does the fact that my mom and I get along great say anything to you about the way I was raised? I actually enjoy going home and seeing my parents because I know I won’t get told that I’m a whore and that I’m a disgrace to the family.

Let me ask you. Do you even care that your kid is still in pain and that everyday she’s afraid to go home, because of you? I know I shouldn’t say things like that, but I was raised not to lie. So here it is, the unadulterated truth. I’ve put up with you long enough. I’ve smiled and I’ve been sweet and happy whenever you come around. No more. I’m tired of hearing my best friend cry because she’s afraid to go home. Sure you’ve had 11 kids, so what? That doesn’t make you a good mom, taking the time to care for each one is being a good mom. Good moms aren’t people who constrict their kid’s freedom so much they cry every night and want to cut themselves because they feel there’s no one there.

Didn’t you tell us that you would do whatever it takes to help her? I was in the room when you said that. Was that a lie? I think it was. I heard you when you said you’d take her to therapy, you’d help her, you didn’t want to wake up one day and find her dead! That was all just a lie wasn’t it! She cries when we take her home, she clutches our hands and cries! Doesn’t that say anything to you?! How can you say you’re parents and not see that?

I remember you telling me that you know wherever your kids are at every hour of the day. Do you know that one daughter has been drinking and has had sex with three different guys that we know of? I’ve also heard that you’ve told your kids you either love everyone or you hate everyone, there is no middle ground. How can that be possible?

You want to try and force her to leave because… because you think we’re problems. Try an institutionalize her; they’ll say she’s not nuts. By law you can’t force her into the car, that’s called battery. Put a restraining order on us, whatever. We don’t care. In our hearts we’ll know that we tried.

No! We’re not trying to tear apart your family! Why in the world would you think that? She doesn’t want to go and she even said that in her state of mental health it wouldn’t be good for her to be taken away from the people that actually care for her. Okay! You worry about her, but have you done anything? I know that you think that being depressed is not something that’s not… Can’t you see that yelling at her like this is hurting her? Treating her like the scum of the earth because she doesn’t want to be with you. I wouldn’t be surprised if she ran away just to show you… no, you know what. She wouldn’t run away. No matter how much you yell and mentally abuse her, she’d still stay. I know because of you I’ll never see my best friend again. But, even still I’ll love her just the same, no matter what you try to do. There’s only two years left until she’s eighteen. You can’t keep her locked away from us forever.
