Pirates of the Skies
Shortly after getting a new game, a teenage girl, Sai, finds herself trapped within the storyline. Life in a video game can be quite the culture shock though. Ever wonder what it's like to get shot and only lose some hp?
Malfunction
I finished my snack slowly in an attempt to bide my time, hoping that I could somehow get out of the rest of the tutorial. The calm beach music had been playing since this had begun and I was growing quite weary of it. Bane strolled in and asked, "Are you ready to finish?"
"You already know the answer to that," I remarked, knowing that no matter how hard I tried, he was going to force me to finish it.
"The sooner you get back in there, the sooner you'll be done," Bane teased in an attempt to get me back into the practice room.
I reluctantly stood up and followed Bane. When we arrived, I saw targets set up and dummies propped in random places. "So this is the part where I get to play with a gun?"
"Not quite, but soon."
"Welcome back, Sai. Section three of the tutorial focuses on combat skills. First up is melee," the annoying intercom voice stated. I listened to the instructions on how to throw a punch and a few kicks. "When you use multiple attacks in a sequence, you perform a combo attack," the voice droned on. Dummies are set up for practice."
"Ah, I wanted to kick a can," I joked, ambling over to one of the dummies. I punched the dummy a few times before attempting a jump kick and hitting the dummy's head. Just as I was about to turn around, the dummy bounced back and tackled me.
"Next, retrieve a sword from the pedestal and proceed to an armored dummy." The voice explained about twenty different ways to wield and strike with a sword before finally ceasing. "To continue to the next weapon, try each attack style at least once"
"Ooh... pretty swords," I mused as I glanced at each sword before choosing which resembled my Katana. After selecting my sword, I dashed to the nearest armored dummy and began slashing at it. First I completed a horizontal and vertical slash combo, followed closely by diagonal strikes. After a few stabs, I backed up and leapt at the dummy, smashing the helmet on its head with the tip of my sword. After a variety of other jump combos, I looked at the massive amount of dents covering the armor like grooves in a tire.
"You sure are vicious. I guess you really were just warming up," Bane commented from behind me.
"How long have you been standing there?" I inquired, propping the sword on my shoulders.
"Long enough to see you jumping around like a psychotic frog," Bane laughed, "Now the next announcement should come right about-"
"You may now exchange the sword for a handgun and proceed to the area with targets. Try to shoot the middle of each target," the intercom interrupted, reviewing the procedure of firing a gun.
"Is it really that hard to fire a-" BANG! A bullet shot into my foot like a hot knife cutting into butter. And it didn't even leave a hole in my shoe.
"Apparently," Bane answered, laughing like a hyena. "Next time try aiming at a target."
I rolled my eyes and shot at one of the targets, blowing a hole right in the middle. I then continued to demolish each target one by one. "So, can I shoot your foot too?" I asked, obtaining some revenge.
Before Bane could respond, the tutorial area began malfunctioning. Targets fell to the ground with a thump and a few lasers came out of nowhere. "Take this!" Bane yelled, throwing me a rifle. He then shot at some of the lasers, stopping them from shooting those deadly neon rays of ultimate doom.
I followed suit and began shooting the lasers to the ground. As I caught up to Bane, I inquired, "Does this happen often?"
"Usually only when there's an intruder; however, on rare occasions it has spontaneously conspired to kill me," Bane calmly explained.
"Is that where the five deaths came from?" I shot another laser off the ceiling.
"No. They shot their feet one too many times," Bane teased. "Now, follow me. You'll enjoy 'fixing' it."
"Time for the big gun?" I asked. When Bane nodded, I excitedly followed him. We arrived in a room with a welcoming party of beams incinerating anything that appeared to move. I saw a turret begging to be used for some mass destruction.
"You run for the turret, and I'll cover you," Bane ordered, continuing to destroy the lasers. "When you get in the seat, you'll notice a square design on the wall. Destroying that should fix this malfunction."
"I'm on it," I gasped, already tired. I dashed for the turret, occasionally evading lasers. Soon I reached the turret and plopped down in it. I began firing at a massive, uncontrolled rate and obliterated about twenty of the lasers before gaining control. Afterwards, I aimed at the square area on the wall, which was above where Bane was standing, and waited for the malfunction to cease.
"Watch out!" Bane shouted as a piece of debris nearly fell on him. I kept my focus on keeping the turret properly aimed. The turret was a bucking horse, and I had to stay on it.
"Finally," I sighed as the power shut off in the training room. I hopped off the turret and sauntered back to the entrance, glancing at the destruction.
"This won't be easy to fix," Bane commented. "Looks like we'll have to finish your training the old fashioned way."
"I'm not complaining," I beamed, glad that I didn't have to listen to that ridiculous robotic voice anymore.
