Pirates of the Skies
Shortly after getting a new game, a teenage girl, Sai, finds herself trapped within the storyline. Life in a video game can be quite the culture shock though. Ever wonder what it's like to get shot and only lose some hp?
Pirate Security Guard (PSG)
I woke up in a bunk bed to the sound of relaxing music. Had I left my radio on again? I didn't even remember lying down to sleep. I crawled out of bed and began meandering towards the door. I noticed that I was no longer in my own room. I exited into a hallway and glanced out a window, which revealed a beautiful landscape far below. At that moment, I knew that somehow I was now inside the game.
"All PSG members report to the bridge!" an announcement blared, echoing through the hallway. I stood there as a mob of people shuffled through the halls. What was PSG anyway, and was a member? I should have read the booklet before starting the game.
"You must be the new girl," A voice commented from behind me. I looked back to see a handsome, dark-haired boy looking at me quizzically. Strangely enough, another select name screen appeared. The default name was Lucas, but I never liked that name much so I decided to call him Rufus.
"Guilty as charged," I remarked, sounding much more confident than I felt.
"Would you like me to escort you to the bridge?" Rufus inquired.
"Lead the way," I replied with a bit of a laugh. I followed him through five hallways before we arrived at an antique-looking doorway.
As we walked through, the boy complained, "Awe, looks like we got back row seats." Rufus then plopped down in one of the few remaining chairs and propped his feet up on another. This must be the so-called 'hero' of the game. I sat down quietly in a different chair and waited. A regal tune began playing as a man, Commander Harold, walked onto the platform. The changing music was getting annoying. Two guards stood at his side, ready to take down any spies.
"We have been plagued by pirates for far too long. Each one will be hunted and destroyed. We will head to a place where numerous pirate sightings have been reported, the Kingdom of the Northern Sea. Each of you will travel in squadrons of no less than five. If you encounter any of those measly scoundrels, kill them," Harold explained.
I sat there dumbfounded. I thought the main character was a sky pirate, not a bounty hunter. I definitely should have read the little booklet. As people began grouping up, I waited to see if any groups came short on members; otherwise, I'd be just as eager to travel alone.
"You can join my group," Rufus shouted over about thirty-five other voices.
"Well, a girl can dream," I whispered, averting my gaze to another window. I looked at the deep blue ocean sky as the airship entered the territory of the kingdom. The relaxing airship music was playing again, but I didn't mind as it helped me organize my thoughts. My group was close by. Soon teams began making bets on who could kill the most pirates. Challenges were made and a competition began to unfold.
"We could take a whole mob of pirates," a tall, burly boy bluffed.
"Well, our group will steal an entire airship," another one mused dreamily.
I rolled my eyes as the arguments turned into fights. "You'll kill no pirates if you fight amongst yourselves!" the commander yelled, stopping the fighters in their tracks. "Anyone else who chooses to fight a fellow bounty hunter will be banned from pirate hunts. Do I make myself clear?"
All music had stopped and the airship grew silent as the grave. No one dared speak as Commander Harold glared at each person challengingly. I continued gazing out the window, oblivious to the commander's staring. As the airship veered to the left, a majestic castle came into view, towering over the horizon. The airship drifted into the lower towns of the kingdom before landing.
The lower towns didn't look nearly as magnificent as the castle had. Also, the music wasn't very good. It sounded like something I would expect to hear in a junkyard. The groups were each assigned a certain sector of the town. My group got the southern area.
As we strolled along the road, something caught my eye through a shop window. It was a gorgeous golden phoenix statue that appeared to glow in the sunlight. I stood at the window, admiring the phoenix for about five minutes before realizing I had been left behind. "Why does this not surprise me?" I mumbled highly sarcastically.
I slowly entered the shop to get a better view of the phoenix. The glint of the sun on the window had obscured my view. For a moment, I wondered if I had any money in this game. Then again I wouldn't be able to take the phoenix out of the game anyways, so I began to leave. Just as I arrived near the door, a tall man barged in and grabbed the phoenix statue I had been admiring. He then strode to the counter and began to reach for his pockets; however, instead of money he pulled out a pistol. The music changed to a dramatic opera tune.
"You don't mind if I take this without paying, do you?" he asked rhetorically. I moved over to get a better look. Was this one of the pirates I was supposed to kill?
"T-t-t-take it!" the shop owner stuttered.
"Wise answer," the pirate remarked.
As he began to leave, one of the employees pulled out a rifle. "Pirate!" he yelled, firing the rifle. His shot missed and instead obliterated some fine jewelry.
"They always have to make this difficult. Now where are the hunters," the pirate scoffed. I realized I was blocking the door. I was supposed to be stopping him; however, I wasn't sure how I was going to pull that off. "Ah, there's a hunter. What are you going to kill me with, a stick?" the pirate laughed, pointing his pistol at my head.

An upbeat rock melody began playing as a katana spontaneously appeared in my hands. Where did that come from? "Here goes nothing," I mumbled, poising myself to attack. At least I would find out how it feels to get shot and only lose hitpoints. Before I could begin an attack, he fired a shot, missing me and causing me to look back as the glass behind me shattered. He took that chance to lunge at me, knocking me to the ground. I felt his knee on my back and the barrel of his gun at my neck.
"You're not very good at this," he commented, sounding slightly disappointed.
"I'm just warming up," I replied. What ever happened to the overly easy beginning battle? On the other hand, maybe this is where some knight in shining armor (likely a thief or rogue who ends up playing an important part in the game) runs in and saves me.
"It's a pirate! Get him!" shouted numerous voices outside. The dramatic opera tune was playing again, but at least there wasn't an end of battle screen.
"Not them," I pleaded.
"More hunters?" asked the pirate.
"Of course, there's always more. In fact four more for now. There's about thirty-five total. They're annoying too," I explained, trying to bide some time.
"You might be useful," the pirate remarked, picking me up and running out the door. "Don't move, if they think you're unconscious they won't fire at me."
"He's got one of our people! Don't shoot!" one of the hunters yelled. The wind blew across my face as the pirate safely escaped the scene of a robbery.
"The whole town will be in an uproar for a while. The hunters will be searching for you. I'll leave you with a choice: will you be a bounty hunter or a sky pirate?" he asked. I would have been very disappointed if I had chosen pirate only to find I had to be a hunter; however, this day began my life as a pirate of the skies, alongside Sky Pirate Bane as I chose to call him.
Then the end battle screen appeared. Oh, cool! I received 500g and 100 experience! I'm now level two!
