PART 8
Fumiko sat silently on a large rock near the edge of the shore. The surf splashed explosively against the edge of her perch. A silent tear rolled down her cheek as the sun glowed orange ahead of her. The pleasant rays of sunlight shined on the surface of the ocean, reflecting the red hue across deep shattering teal. She sighed and stared at the medallion resting by her foot. She clicked her claws against the rock with a lethargic motion. She sighed again and laid back, staring up at the darkening sky as the moon grew brighter.
“Hey,” a voice came softly. Fumiko turned to see a small white cat sitting at the far edge of the rock. She ‘humph’ed and turned the other way. “Don’t you turn away from me!” The cat cried angrily, padding over and hitting her with it’s tail. She growled and refused to look at it.
“Pay attention to me dammit!” the cat cried moodily, “I have something important to say, Nyahh!” it mewed.
“So say it.” Fumiko said darkly, still refusing eye contact.
“I know you’re a demon. I can smell it on you.” it purred, sitting beside her.
“And?” she replied.
“The boy, Jinn, he’s a Demon Chaser.” the cat replied, licking its paw and looking up at her coyly.
“A what?” she asked finally tuning towards the white cat.
“He kills demons. That’s his job.”
“So why did he not murder me?” she asked, biting her lip.
“Because, you look like a halfling. He probably doesn’t think you’re a demon.” the cat mewed.
“Not for much longer.” she replied. “The life force I shared with Asuma is depleting. Soon I will be forced to return to my demon form.” she replied, absently stroking her tail.
“Then you’ll just have to find another provider. Maybe if you’d explain things Jinn’d agree. Mew!” it purred, sitting down beside her as the last wisps of sunlight died away.
“There is such a thing as being too cat like. You do not need to add ‘Mew’ and ‘Nyah’ to the end of your sentences.” she mocked.
“Don’t change the subject!” it shot angrily, flicking its tail.
“I can if I want. Besides, even if I did not find a new partner, that weakling could not bring me to my knee.” she boasted honestly, “I am much more powerful in my real body.” She added.
“So why not be that way all the time if you’re so tough?” it mocked.
“That is not how I was raised.” she replied, stiffening her posture and acting highly refined in a mocking manner.
“Fumiko?” Jinn called from the beach, almost 20 yards away. Her ears twitched and she turned towards him. He jogged over, a bow clutched tightly in his hands. She stared at it with growing apprehension. The white cat winked at her and sped away into the forest behind them. “Hey, d’you think you could help me out?” he asked sounding out of breath.
“What with? She asked in return.
“Well, there’s a village nearby being attacked by a toad demon. He explained pulling an arrow out of his quiver and knocking it in the bow.. She inclined her head toward the sky and sniffed the air gently.
“Fire…and copper. Corpses too.” she listed turning back down to gaze at him with bright green eyes. His blue eyes widened in response. She quickly sniffed again. “A fool! I would know that scent anywhere.”
“What? Oh, never mind that! C’mon we’ve got to hurry! The people are dying!” Without saying anything Fumiko jumped up and grabbed Jinn’s arm, dragging him along as she raced across the earthen terrain. She grunted as his attempt to run alongside her slowed her down. She tossed him up into the air and caught him on her back. Trying not to think of the awkward body on her back she raced onwards towards the village.
