Chapter two
I woke up at noon on Tuesday. I groaned, rolled over and tried to go back to sleep, until I saw something, I didn’t recognize. Taped to the full-length mirror was the most gorgeous choker I had ever seen. It appeared to be two parallel ropes of square cut rubies. I rubbed my eyes, and pushed back my green satin sheets to get a closer look. I kneeled in front of the mirror, and for the first time in ages, actually paid attention to how I looked. My light blue spaghetti strap nightie, that only covered to my mid-thigh, my dishevelled wavy hair, with slightly curled ends, my light peach-to- pale skin tone, even my leaf green eyes seemed strange and unfamiliar. What’s happening to me? I asked myself confused. I shook my head, and carefully took the tape off my mirror. I held the necklace for a few minutes, before I undid the clasp, and slid the choker around my neck. After fumbling for a moment, I finally get it done up. “Wow.” I murmur. “I’m pretty…” After that statement, I rummaged around my room, trying to find anything that Aunt Morrigan would approve of. Sighing I finally approve of, my little red, black, and forest green plaid skirt, with a simple black long sleeved, off shoulders top. The top had a spider web pattern that was nearly transparent. I giggled at the irony, of me trying to look like a modern Goth teen, when my aunt was actually called a “Witch”. I mused up my hair, to make it curly and dishevelled. After a quick line of black eyeliner, I slid on my black stiletto heels, making me grow from 5’5” to 5’7” in height. Digging through my jewellery, I found my black watch with a spider web pattern on the band, my dragon bracelet. I spent a second looking at the odd bracelet, with the dragons tail in its mouth as the clasp. I also slid on a pair of simple square cut ruby earrings. Looking in the mirror I gave a final inspection. “Nice.” I whispered, turned off the light and went to the kitchen. “Mornin’ Druidh.” I patted my West Highland white terrier. As I said that, my other 3 puppies came racing into the kitchen. I laughed. “Hey Jaw’s” I scratched behind the ears of my Boston terrier. “Love ya too, Finnegan.” I managed to say as my Irish Water Spaniel, pushed me to the ground, and started licking my face. “Help me Aille.” I begged my Samoyed, who sat there, cocking her head to the side as if to think about my request. I managed to get up without killing any of the dogs. Don’t get me wrong, I love my babies, but sometimes they get in the way. “Okay, sweeties I got to get going. Miranda’s here, and I’ll take you guys out later okay.” I hugged each one of my girls, then grabbed my keys and walked out the door. “Hello Morrg.” Miranda smiled. “Hey, when you’re with them today, can you see if anything’s wrong with Aille, she doesn’t seem as calm as usual.” “Sure.” Miranda agreed and walked into the house, as I stepped into my GT. I drove to a café and restaurant called Pandora’s Box. Rika, Tori and I claimed it for our usual get-together-spot, about 4 years ago, when we were lost and confused grade 9’s. I parked my GT in between Tori’s baby blue Mercedes, and Rika’s Ford F-150, locked the door and walked into Pandora’s Box. “Hello Draaca!” Louisa smiled. Louisa owns Pandora’s Box, and she has a weird habit of calling people by their last names. “Blackwell and Sakura are at your usual table already with their cappuccino’s. Would you like me to boil you some water, for your tea?” “Please and thank you Louisa!” I smiled at the woman, and walked to our corner booth. “Hey guys!” I said leaning over Rika’s booth backing. “Hey, we were beginning to think you’d forgotten.” Tori laughed as I made bunny ears with my fingers behind Rika’s head. “Me, forget my girls? Never.” I giggled as Rika swatted my hand away. I slid around the booth to sit beside Rika. “Here’s your tea Draaca.” Louisa set the teapot in front of me with a teacup. “Thank you.” I poured the Chamomile tea into the cup, and added 1 and ½ spoonfuls of sugar. Stirring it in, I motioned for Rika and Tori to lean in close. “What is it Morrg?” Tori whispered. “Guy’s, yesterday when I was listening to my answering machine, I heard the strangest thing, and you too are going to put me into an asylum for it.” “No we wont Morrganna.” Rika assured me. “Well, you guys remember who I was named for right?” I took a sip of tea. “Yeah, your Aunt Morrigan, who was named after the Celtic Raven goddess with the same name.” I nodded. “Well, I heard her voice on my machine.” I paused, and to my surprise Rika and Tori didn’t look accusing. “You guys believe me?” “Well duh! Your Morrganna Draaca! The girl with magic in her veins that couldn’t tell a lie to save her life!” Tori smiled. “Yeah, and remember all those years ago, when we actually did study and practice witch-craft. Every Tarot, palm or crystal ball reading you did came true. And since it was your Aunt to teach you the herbs and magic and everything, it makes sense that she’d be magical too.” Rika added. “But she’s been dead for 14 years!” I reasoned. “Not really.” Rika reasoned. “Think about it. What about you “mysterious” benefactor. It could’ve been your aunt.” “But why didn’t she show herself earlier. If she was my benefactor, she’s been hiding for 5 years! And dead for 9!” Tears started forming. “Oh hun, calm down. It’s going to be all right. What did Morrigan say?” Tori asked. I sniffed. “At 8 I’m to meet her at the W.D.M.” I whipped at my eyes. “Thank God for that museum. Now if only He really can keep Canada free…” “Shut up Priss.” Rika said annoyed. “Sorry.” Tori rolled her eyes. “Guys what am I going to do?” I asked them. “I have an idea.” Rika smiled. “We’ll go with you to the W.D.M. Except Priss and I will stay back a bit, so you and your aunt can have some privacy, but if you get into trouble, all you have to do is give us the signal and we’ll be down there for you.” “And who said I had any thing to do with this?” Rika and me stared at Tori. “Okay I get it. I’ll be there.” “Good.” Rika and I say synchronized. I finish my tea, and Rika and Tori finish their Cappuccino’s. We split the bill like always, and leave. As we climb into our own vehicles, I shout to them, “Don’t forget 8’oclock!” They both nod and go on their way. I start the GT and drive back home. As I walk into the house I get pushed down by Finnegan. “Hey, hun. I know you love me, but please get off me!” I laughed and got up. “I guess Miranda already left.” I shrugged. I looked at the clock. “Jeez, I still have 7 hours. You guys in the mood for a movie?” All four dogs ran to the couch, as I went to make popcorn. So I spent my afternoon watching Vlad with 4 dogs. I know, I need a life. Once my clock chimed 7, I got up to finish getting ready. I said good bye to my puppies, grabbed my keys, and before 7:05, I was already on the road. When I pulled into the Western Development Museum’s parking lot, I spotted Tori and Rika easily. They were waiting at the main entrance looking like the weirdest couple yet. Tori, as her rich background allows, was dressed in a new age, pink Roxy cropped tee, with a dark denim mini skirt and pink high-heels. While Rika stood there in black hikers, washed-out bell-bottom jeans, and a dark blue t-shirt that said in black, “I’m the one you’ll never forget.” I shook my head and laughed. “Aren’t we an odd group? A Goth, and Prep, and… I’m sorry Rika, I still can’t classify you.” “I’m a Jock.” she shrugged. “Okay, but we still make an odd team.” I lead the way inside the building. I paid for all of us to enter, and get candy cane sticks. Mine in Butter Rum, Tori’s is Strawberry, and Rika and her Peppermint. We wonder into Boomtown, where I go to see the old telegraph, while Rika and Tori go off to the school. I glance their way to make sure, they always have an eye on me, when I hear a voice from behind me. “My sweet Morrganna. You’re all grown up.”
