All of the sudden I decided I'd write an excerpt of one of my old story ideas, Majuu.
This takes place after the climax of the Maz and Aurel Kaiser fight, after Corvus Karasu, the Sage of Darkness, stepped int to fight Kaiser and was badly wounded and pinned against a wall with Aurel's new invention (meant for impaling demons and killing them instantly). Even though he is beaten to a pulp, Aurel (the Sage of Light) still persists and it's up to Maz to stop him. Everyone is finally on Maz's side at this point after suffering a betrayal from one of their comrades, Gale, and having some of the other Sages (the Sages of Earth and Water) attack their group. Maz's other group members, Suzu (a girl he abducted from home initially in hopes of a fresh meal), and Hilbert (the Child of Light that ended the war between humans and demons, and Aurel's grandson), were rushed to safety by the Sage of Fire, Vulcan Flaroan, who met Maz six years earlier under Corvus' instructions.
Maz goes in for his final attack but a new force appears...
Chapter XX: The Sage of Sages (at least the first half)
"Damnit Kaiser, stop this!" Corvus yelled.
Maz looked back to where Corvus was pinned and looked at Aurel in front of him once again. He readied his claws in order to tackle the Light Sage on once more. Kaiser was down to his last breath, so one last blow would do it. Suzu wouldn't like if he got his hands dirty with the guilt of murder after getting this far. He readied to pounce, channeling all the leftover demonic energy from Corvus' clash with Aurel.
"You demon scum..." Kaiser said, breathing heavily. "Tainted my grandson... tainted my subordinates... tainted the Sage of Wind! You are a plague upon this world! Tis why ve banished you to the moon to begin with!!"
"Shut it, moronyo," Maz said. "I was never on the side of that trash, you all just pointed and said, 'oh, a demon! let's hunt it til it's more than a rotted corpse!!' People like you are why that war lasted so long. Yer all blind, more blind than you realize. Understandka?"
"Vhat insolence..." Kaiser said, healing as much of wounds as possible. "Very well. Hit me vith your best shot!!"
Maz ran on all fours and then jumped at Kaiser, ready to strike with all the demonic energy.
"Halt this instance!" a very small, but powerful voice shouted.
Maz was immediately batted away by a mysterious force, falling to the ground. The same force apparently got Kaiser and sent him flying into the wall, knocking him unconscious. Maz skidded across the floor back to where Corvus was. Corvus was now standing, no longer pinned to the wall by Kaiser's monster pegs. His face was in shock, yet Maz could see tears coming from his eyes.
"Damnit, what the hell was that?!" Maz said. "Yo Karasu, you gonna fill me in on what the hell is going onda?"
Before he could answer, Maz felt a strange tingling going up his chest. He tilted his head up to see what appeared to be a tiny woman standing on his chest. She was dressed oddly, with her main attire consisting of a dress that frilled and puffed out just below the waist, and her upper half covered by a formal shirt that nearly looked like the standard coat uniform for one from Gliean. She also had a coat giving to high-ranking officers in the global military that she wore like a cape, that went along with a scarf she must have picked up from a small town in Morasow. He couldn't see her legs quite well, which was fine as the more striking feature was the large top hat she wore that appeared to angle slightly down the middle of her head, creating a shadowy area across her upper forehead. Maz had never seen that type of clothing before, nor could he deduce what nation it came from.
"So you're Maz, yes?" she said, apparently waiting for him to conversation. "Eh... ye-yes?" Maz said, unsure how to react. "Very interesting, Hmm-hmm~" she chuckled. Her voice had a very distinguished and proper Gliean accent, as if she was off to nanny some children. "Corvus dear, may I ask where the rest of this gentleman's crew currently reside?" she asked turning to Corvus. "Vulcan has them in the main Meeting Hall," Corvus replied calmly, almost like he was about to bow. "Now now now, Mr. Karasu~" she said, giving him a wink and revealing her Najie pipe, taking a smoke. "Formalities are nothing but flattery a dainty miss such as myself does not require, hmm-hmm~. No bowing!" Her voice seemed too sweet, as if it was the kind of voice that could easily win over even the meanest of Majuu Elites with just one breath. And she was there, barely 3 inches tall, standing on Maz.
She turned her attention back to Maz for a second and poked at his chin with a pink parasol she had been carrying in her other hand, possibly from the nearby country of Ranfan. Maz looked at her and just swallowed, which caused his chest to expand up a little bit causing her to bounce up and down, yet her gaze didn't falter. "Now then, Maz," her voice echoed her sweet Gliean accent. "I've heard a great deal about you. Please do not disappoint such the wonderful tales that have been spun about your name, hmm-hmm?" She jumped off Maz and onto the half-destroyed cobalstone floor. Maz immediately sat up and looked at her, then at Corvus who merely smiled, then back at her. She took in a bit more of her pipe and let out a big puff with a sigh. Her other arm with the parasol, hanging naturally by her side, tapped the parasol into the ground twice. She let out a little giggle and soon began expanding and growing. Maz crawled back as the tiny Gliean lady he had met grew into a full-size woman, at least 5'5" if not a little taller. He could see her hair now a little more clearly, which was to say it was not the greatest hair. It had seen better days with how frazzled the brown twirls were, but she seemed like the kind of lady who traveled far, so such hair was to possibly be expected? Her green eyes looked at Maz once again as she now pointed her normal-sized parasol at Maz once again. "Please do indulge me on such tales," she said with a smile.
Maz stood up and remembered that he was actually taller than her, so he immediately felt a need to sit back down as to now upset her. She pulled her parasol up underneath Maz's chin to prevent such an action however. "Well, yes but... a... no..." Maz was now wondering what had come over him, the initial shock was gone but somehow this woman still had him entranced and very intimidated. "It would be nice to know who I'm talking to first at leastaaaa!!' he blurted out. "Oh?" her gloved hand went to her mouth. "This won't do, won't do at all! I must apologize then, dear Maz, it seems you were not fully prepared for such an encounter, hmm-hmm?" She looked at Corvus with a sly smile, and put her parasol back down by her side as she took another inhale of her pipe. This time she tilted her head back and let the puff of smoke fly above her, which started to magically become a name. "I am Madame Marian Raliah," she said as the words formed in the smoke. "The Seventh Sage of the Sage Order, and the so-called 'Archsage' that has mastered all types of magic and is looked to the leader of the Sage Order." Maz felt more intimidated now than before with this new knowledge. He was recognizing her power, as it was her diminutive form that batted back his last attack with relative ease and also took Kaiser out in the same blow! For being reported as 'missing' she didn't seem the type, she was powerful to stand her own. "Sometimes I am called Lady Marian," she said, puffing out another smoke to show the letters changing above her head. "And sometimes the Archsage Ral. But I must confess my most preferred name is that of Madame Raliah, hmm-hmm. Just a personal preference, if you don't mind." "Not at all..." Maz said. "Now then, should we get to the Meeting Hall?" Corvus asked. "A splendid idea!" Raliah said. Maz was still trying to shake off his intimidation. What was she doing that caused this? It was just like the first time he met Suzu, but that one was more sporadic, this one seemed constant. "Oh, my apologies!" Raliah said curtseying to Maz. "I should have introduced myself in the first place. If you're still a little in shock let me heal that off you." She pointed her parasol at Maz and inhaled another bit of her pipe, blowing the puff at Maz as it followed the parasol. The Parasol opened as she twirled it in front of Maz, allowing it to sprinkle all over his body. The intimidation was gone, at least the constant feeling of it. What remained was his own embarrassment and self-brought intimidation as he was standing in front of one of the world's most important figures. "Shake that off dear," she said with a smile, easily noticing how Maz was still feeling. "There is much to discuss and I will need you at your best, hmm-hmm! I must meet this little crew you have put together, as they are simply a great story to tell further generations." Maz shook his head and began walking with Corvus. Raliah trailed behind as she closed up her parasol. She was something, strange, kind, pretty, and powerful. A very unique combination not yet seen.
Maz then remembered Kaiser's unconscious body over at the other side of the wall and beared his fangs. "We still need to take care of him!" he said. "Oh, he's no trouble now," Raliah said. "He is nothing but an old man who looks at old ways, not quite understanding the new. He was beneficial to ending the war, I shall give him that, but that is not to say his way of ending it was the right way to do so." She winked at Maz, "I hit him with one doozy of a sleeping sickness, one he will not wake from for a good week. In the meantime, I've already contacted the appropriate authorities to deal with him. He is of little issue currently. So if you please." Maz sighed and continued onward with Corvus, though they stopped momentarily for Raliah. She merely waved and tapped her parasol into the ground once again, shrinking down to a height that was just a smidge shorter than Corvus' boot. "You see so many new things when you look at the world in a different view," she said as she walked alongside the two, somehow keeping up.
With Aurel Kaiser finally defeated, what more was there for Maz to do? He had set out what he had planned to initially, at least after he started to get along with Suzu. Now with this type of player appearing, anything seemed possible. Maz looked down at her as he watched her remove her top hat to shake her hair off, and placing it back on. Whatever was next, it was going to be big.
To be continued...?
That came out of nowhere. But at least I had fun with my characters again, XD I'm finally getting all of the sages worked out too. For the longest time I had no idea what the Archsage would be or look like, all I knew is that they were going to be female and be good at nearly all magics, obviously. There is a handicap to her powers, otherwise she could just fix all the world's problems. She was also missing in action for the last year and a half (which is when the main events of Maz and company transpired), which was also for a reason. Probably the one she'll explain to Maz and his friends!
Hope you enjoyed reading, =)
