Chapter Five
"I hate this place! How can a town, floating s**t loads of miles above both land and sea smell so much like fish and crap!?"
The only answer to Lorelei's question were the sound of this odd trio's steps.
Lorelei was the girl with multicolored punk hair and attitude, following the silent red haired harlequin of the Smile Patrol, Ace and Happy, their pet.
Complete opposites has they were, Lorelei loud and colorful, Ace with his dark black and red outfit had at least one thing in common.
They would never pass unnoticed on the streets.
Well, at least not unless they were master of disguise.
There would be no point in them trying to go in disguise anyhow, since E.A.G.L.E. had new cameras being installed everyday and agents constantly trying to catch this terrorists, this insane and unstable criminals.
Some say the mafias, which had all to play according to the rules E.A.G.L.E. imposed to them, bought the sewers and most underground as some above ground locations in town so they could have privacy. They had to help the organization have a stronger grip on town or be destroyed by it, the same deal everyone had to make all over the globe in every region on land, sea or in the skies when the agency took over but that didn't meant the heads of organized crime would let E.A.G.L.E. take over everything.
Which is why there were many people running underground and using the sewers to move in, out and around town just like this three right now.
There were few parts of Heaven that weren't constantly watched, thus the sewers soon became more than the short cut. The sewers were also a sanctuary, an hide out to all of the vast majority of Heaven's rejects from outlaws to illegal aliens and some say even monsters, freaks of science that had escaped out of secret labs.
Which is why the last member of this trio had tagged along.
More like a pet and goon than a actual friend or partner in crime, Happy was possibly in the top ten of most odd and illegal things in town.
"Happy" Ben was a large ape with mechanical limbs and eyes.
Standing erect and wearing some large clothes he almost passed for human or at least one of those mutants that would make their to Heaven through any means possible. Most of which, illegal.
Whatever had been done to Happy, prosthetics aside had also made him smart or well trained enough to take all sorts of commands and so the Patrol kept him around
Ace stopped, his hand stretched out warning the other two to stop.
"What? Is it another monster?" Lorelei asked, hopeful instead of frightened by the idea of being attack by some hideous creature.
Anything that distracted her from the smell would do.
ANYTHING.
Ace pointed towards the end of the sewer tunnel.
It ended abruptly a long stairway protruding from the wall and leading down to what looked like a camping ground. There were several tents and from where they were Lorelei and Ace could see many other tunnels ending at different heights in this underground dome and quite several people moving towards the tents and amongst them.
"Looks like we'll have to go down..." Lorelei looked back at Happy, who simply tilted it's head wearing it's usual vacant smile from which it's name derived.
"Sorry, Happy! You'll have to stay! You're too big to walk down this tiny stairs."
She waved her arms in an almost comical fashion while talking has if it would make the meaning of her words easier to understand.
Ace cut in the conversation and simply gestured to Happy a simple command.
Sit.
He then grabbed Lorelei by her left arms and pulled her behind, leading her down to the the tents.
"Oh, no.." Lorelei frowned has they descended, almost coiling in disgust. "The smell is getting worse."
Happy obeyed and stayed behind, looking as his friend went away.
Then suddenly something jumped on him and nearly got him, Happy turned on time to hit his attacker, slamming it against the left wall.
Happy quickly grabbed the creature by the throat, it's mechanical hands pressing harder as the thing tried to squirm free.
It might have been human once, now half mechanical like Happy but sharper and feral trying to claw at Happy who kept smiling.
Happy snapped the creature's neck and walked back sitting down where he was standing moments ago as if nothing had happened.
